In this paper, a method is presented for removing the risk associated with the testing and development of novel drive system topologies, prototype electrical machines, advanced control system strategies, or a combination of the aforementioned without using any real motors/generators. The test platforms for low-power machines are relatively inexpensive and accessible; however, as power levels increase into the upper kilowatt and megawatt range, validation of prototype machines and drives becomes costly. The proposed induction machine emulator (IME) platform utilizes the power hardware-in-the-loop concept in conjunction with a high-fidelity machine model and load dynamics. The electrical machine and its load dynamics are simulated with a real-time digital simulator, which generates appropriate control commands to a power electronics-based voltage amplifier that interfaces to a variable speed drive (VSD). Specifically, the current draw is recreated by altering the phase and magnitude of a voltage amplifier connected to a VSD under test via a unique transformer-based LCL-type coupling network. Based on the proposed concept, the use of a multiwinding, tap-changing transformer establishes a truly versatile and universal test platform for a wide range of power levels. In addition, this paper presents a control strategy in the synchronously rotating reference frame in dq coordinates for the power electronic converters in IME operation. Experimental results at the 25-kVA power level validate the feasibility and highly dynamic performance of the proposed test platform.

An Induction Machine Emulator for High-Power Applications Utilizing Advanced Simulation Tools With Graphical User Interfaces

A large number of papers regarding Coupling Inductors (CIs) for interleaved parallel connected converter stages is available in literature However, to the knowledge of the authors, a comprehensive summary of the basics and a description of the modeling and the experimental analysis, as well as the conditions which must be satisfied to avoid saturation of the CI's core are still missing This paper intends to close this gap partially based on research conducted on a multi-phase 3-level voltage source converter which is intended to be employed as a high performance AC power source The main focus of the investigations is on CIs with high coupling factors k ≈ 1 Besides a detailed CI literature review, the focus is on the modeling of the component itself and on the analysis of the requirements for the targeted application The separation of the coupling inductor currents and bridge-leg output voltages into longitudinal and transverse components is introduced to illustratively explain the CI's behavior A complete investigation to avoid saturation in all operating conditions is conducted Finally, the derived theoretical analysis and their conclusions are successfully verified by extensive measurements on a phase leg of a 10 kW 3-level voltage source converter prototype

Modeling and experimental analysis of a Coupling Inductor employed in a high performance AC power source

In this study, the design space (DS) concept is refined and utilized to design the output filter of a ${\rm 10}$ - ${\rm kW}$ , four-quadrant, three-phase, switch-mode controllable AC power source (CPS). The DS concept is based on the simultaneous consideration of multiple criteria that are derived from application-oriented specifications for the CPS regarding quality and transient response of the output voltage, and limited reactive power demand of the output filter. In this paper, the output filter of the studied CPS needs to satisfy six different criteria, which, in the case of a single-stage $LC$ filter, leads to bounds on the values of $L$ and $C$ that can be indicated by boundary curves in an $L\hbox{-}C$ plane. The intersection set of all boundary curves defines the DS, in which all six specifications can be fulfilled. For the considered requirements, it is shown that the DS is empty for a single-stage $LC$ filter, but exists for a two-stage $LC$ filter, which is therefore employed as an output filter of the CPS. To fully exploit the 4D DS of the two-stage $LC$ filter, a multi objective optimization, resulting in the power density–efficiency Pareto front, is performed to determine the most compact and/or most efficient filter design among all possible filter realizations with parameters in the DS. From the outcome of this optimization, the filter design with the highest power density of ${14.6}\, {\rm kW} / {\rm dm}^{3}$ ( ${239}\, {\rm W} /{\rm in}^{3}$ ), for an efficiency of $99.4\%$ , is realized in hardware. Finally, all six specifications for the CPS are successfully verified by experimental measurements.

Design Space Analysis and $\rho$ – $\eta$ Pareto Optimization of $LC$ Output Filters for Switch-Mode AC Power Sources

This paper proposes a systematic approach to design the output filter of a 10 kW, low-voltage 400 V ll,rms , fouroutput phase, hard-switched AC source based on the Three-Level Neutral Point Clamped Voltage Source Converter topology. Given specifications of the AC source, such as the voltage quality, the control performance or the conducted EMI at the output of the source, are translated into corresponding families of curves in the parameter space of the output filter. The area/volume enclosed by these curves represents the design space of the output filter in which all tuples (L f , C f ), e.g. for a single-stage LC-filter, fulfill every single AC source specification. From all possible filter parameters in the design space, the set of parameters resulting in the smallest filter volume, the lowest filter weight, the highest filter efficiency and/or the lowest filter costs can be selected.

Analysis of the design space of single-stage and two-stage LC output filters of switched-mode AC power sources

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and practical implementation of an inverter-based diesel generator emulator. The main purpose of this emulator is for the study of frequency variations in diesel-based autonomous power systems in a laboratory environment where the operation of a real diesel generator is not possible. The emulator basically consists in a voltage source inverter with a second order output filter which voltage references are given by the model of the diesel generator. The control of the emulator is based on the digital signal processor TMS320F2812, where the mathematical models of the diesel generator and the control of the inverter are computed in real-time. Parameters for the model were obtained from commercially available components. Experimental results for different values of speed droop showed that the emulator achieves a satisfactory performance in the transient and stationary response. For the stationary response, the measured frequency deviates from theoretical values with a mean absolute error of: 0.06 Hz for 0% droop, 0.037 Hz for 3% droop, and 0.087 Hz for 5% droop. For the transient response, the measured frequency nadir deviates from simulations in: 0.05 Hz for 0% droop, 0.02 Hz for 3% droop, and 0.1 Hz for 5% droop.
