Heavy metal pollution induced due to coal mining effluent on surrounding aquatic ecosystem and its management through naturally occurring aquatic macrophytes.

Coal is the major fossil fuel used for power generation in India. For producing more and more coal, mining activities are increasing day by day. Coal mining activities lead to environmental changes to a large extent such as degradation in quality of air, water, soil, changes in landform, land use/land cover and vegetation distribution. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is therefore important to study the nature and impact of mining activities on the environment. The present study includes a review of the environmental impact studies done on various specific aspects in India, which involve methodologies of field-site investigation, laboratory analysis and satellite data processing. The study could be broadly divided into two parts. Firstly, taking Jharia coal-field as a case study, the parameters/criteria affecting the environment have been identified. The parameters that are the most affected due to mining are air, water, soil, agricultural land, vegetation and, topography. Later, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been used for prioritizing of these parameters/criteria to carry out EIA in Jharia coal-field. Upon analysis, air has been found to be the most affected followed by water, soil, vegetation, agricultural land and topography. Moreover, the alternatives for each parameter/criterion have also been prioritized. The proposed methodology will help in deriving relationships based on field, laboratory and satellite data analysis. Once these relationships are derived, steps could be taken by policy makers for modification of the existing mine policies and incorporating the new measures in future mine planning so as to reduce the impact of coal mining on the environment.

Environmental impact studies in coalfields in India: A case study from Jharia coal-field

Five heavy metals Cu, Cd, Mn, Pb and Hg were found in high concentration from three sampling sites located in Asia's largest anthropogenic lake Govind Ballabh Pant GBP Sagar. Concentrations of these heavy metals were measured in Water, bottom sediment and in different parts of the aquatic macrophytes collected from the reservoir. Plants collected from the lake were Eichhornia crassipes, Azolla pinnata, Lemna minor, Spirodela polyrrhiza, Potamogeton pectinatus, Marsilea quadrifolia, Pistia stratiotes, Ipomea aquqtica, Potamogeton crispus, Hydrilla verticillata and Aponogeton natans. These plants have shown the high concentrations of Cu, Cd, Mn, Pb and Hg in their different parts due to bioaccumulation. In general plant roots exhibited higher concentrations of heavy metals than corresponding sediments. A comparison between different morphological tissues of the sampled plants revealed the metal concentration in following order roots > leaves. Analyses of bottom sediment indicated the higher concentrations of Cd, Mn, Cu and Pb. Strong positive correlations were obtained between the metals in water and in plants as well as between metal in sediment and in plants. Indicating the potential of these plants for pollution monitoring of these metals.

In the pursuit for rapid industrial growth in India the consumption of coal as an energy resource has increased manifold. In comparison to coal production, much less attention is paid to the ecological aspects in the coal mining industry. This is perhaps because the disastrous effect caused by newly modified environments due to mining in a particular area is not immediate, but effects are visible after a period of time. Hence, with the adoption of advanced technology for higher production, India is gradually heading towards irreversible environmental damage brought about by land degradation, deforestation, water pollution, air pollution and noise pollution. As a part of an exercise to study the impact of large scale opencast mining operations, Singrauli Coalfield is an excellent example. The paper is part of research work being carried out in Singrauli coalfields (now Northern Coalfields Ltd.) the biggest opencast coal mine in Asia. The paper attempts to cover various sources of water pollution in Singrauli opencast coal mine at one place and the measurement of chemical parameters of water to assess the water quality degradation in and around the mine. 11 refs.

Impact of opencast coal mining on water environment - a case study

Acid-base accounting tests are generally used as a screening tool to delineate and define the geochemical character of different rocks. Geochemical investigations indicated that the rocks of the study area could be grouped as either acid producing or acid neutralizing. An experiment conducted in the laboratory indicates that allowing the acid mine water to drain through friable, alkaline sandstone neutralizes the mine water. This may be an inexpensive option to use at this site.

The air quality survey in an opencast (openpit) coal mining complex has revealed that the problem of air pollution is significant in the mining area. However, in comparison to SO2 and NOx, SPM levels were found to be the major threat to the air quality, and therefore calls for irrroediate mitigation measures. However it has been assessed that proper management at the planning stage could have reduced the concentration levels of pollutants, had it been due consideration at that stage of developnent. This aspect of course is in addition to meteorological parameters that often play a significant role in deciding the environmentally safe reskien-tial areas in such complexes. Air pollution problems in an Indian opencast coal mining complex: A case study

In this paper, a technique has been suggested to know the quality of mine drainage even before the start of mining operation. The coal and associated rock samples are collected from the mine site. The mineralogical composition and geochemical character of each rock types occurring at the site are determined. The geo-chemical properties are measured in terms of R-pH, pollution production potential (PPP) and acid neutralization potential (ANP). The geo-chemical characteristics of various rock types indicate that they have different geo-chemical properties. There is a discrepancy in pH values obtained under laboratory conditions and field data and an explanation is given. On the basis of geo-chemical properties and weathering tests, it is found that except sandstone, all other litho-types such as, coal, shale, and shaly coal have the potential to deteriorate water quality and whatever the water pollutants present in the mine water are just because of interaction of these rock units with water. It is predicted that drainage from coal, shale, and shaly coal may be acidic, whereas drainage from sandstone is basic. The more or less same patterns are observed in the field. The technique suggested for the prediction of drainage quality may prove helpful and can identify rock types likely to produce water contaminants during their exposure to atmosphere in a mine.
