Purpose – To succeed in an uncertain environment, firms must respond to changing customer needs, and logistics flexibility is an important part of the response. This paper defines logistics flexibility, creates a framework to understand it, and shows how it relates to customer satisfaction.Design/methodology/approach – The study uses a large sample survey (n=273) from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers to develop valid and reliable instruments to measure logistics flexibility and to test the relationships among the variables using structural equation modeling.Findings – The results indicate strong, positive, and direct relationships between flexible logistics competence and capability, and between flexible logistics capability and customer satisfaction.Research limitations/implications – The dependent and independent variables were measured through a single respondent, which may introduce common‐method bias. Spanning flexibility, a critical dimension of value chain flexibility, is the ability of a firm to provide horizontal information connections across the value chain to meet a variety of customer needs. This research organizes literature on spanning flexibility and classifies it according to competence and capability theory.Design/methodology/approach – The study collected data from 273 manufacturing executives related to spanning flexibility. Current competition among companies is fought through their supply chains As the performance of the supply chain depends not only on manufacturing and marketing attributes, it becomes necessary to establish a framework upon which to develop a supply chain strategy The paper presents the rationale and principles of a customer–product–process–resource (CPPR) framework for the simultaneous analysis of the business, supplier, manufacturing, planning, marketing and customer dimensions of a supply chain strategy The originality of the CPPR framework is that it establishes a set of supply chain structural elements, that when put together determine the degree of alignment of a supply chain strategy As the main objective of a supply chain strategy is to achieve customer satisfaction as an output of the supply chain operations, the CPPR framework becomes a realignment tool when used in combination with a realignment methodology, which is also presented in the paper

Comprehensive framework for the development of a supply chain strategy

An organization’s supply chain is the upstream fraction of the value chain activities, aiming to ensure that the right materials, services, and technologies are purchased from the right sources, at the right time, and in the right quality. It is essential that a company is able to utilize its supply chain with the support of a good monitoring scheme. This paper considers a framework of supply chain management embracing the principles of fuzzy logic for analyzing and monitoring performance of suppliers based on the criteria of product quality and delivery time. The proposed system recommends the quantity that should be placed in the next purchase order by indicating the possible issues to be considered prior to final confirmation with the relevant suppliers.

Methodology for monitoring supply chain performance: a fuzzy logic approach

Proposes that, due to the changing market, companies can no longer work with the logistic systems of the past but must develop new logistic concepts, logistic management and control systems to support the new concepts. Discusses the importance of order penetration point (OPP) within the development of time‐based management and control systems. Concludes that creativity in product development, production and distribution must be based on strong modern logistical foundations to survive in the competitive market.
