Abstract Human disturbances have degraded Nigeria’s dense vegetation and this is leading to a continuous habitat destruction of avian species in the Guinea Savanna zone of Nigeria. This study investigated the diversity of avifauna in relation to habitat types in selected areas of Guinea Savanna zone of Nigeria. The point count method was used to record bird species richness and abundance in four stratified habitats – forest, woodland, grassland, and riverside. A total of 2,545 individuals from 50 families of 136 species were recorded across 64 sampling points in the four habitats, in 2023 and 2024. The forest habitat had the highest species richness (86), followed by woodland (85) and grassland (54). The difference was only significant through pairwise comparisons that is between forest and grassland as well as between woodland and grassland. Riverside habitat had the highest abundance (54.5.0±38.7) while grassland had the least (28.1±8.93). The difference in abundance significantly varied across habitat types. Meanwhile, the woodland habitat recorded the highest bird species diversity (2.59). Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) – a generalist – had the highest relative abundance while White-faced Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna viduata) had the highest abundance in a single habitat, the riverside habitat, recognized as a specialist. In conclusion, the diversity index of bird species was high in all the habitats with no significant difference, and therefore, the results highlighted the importance of habitat diversity in the Guinea Savanna zone. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting and restoring habitats, particularly forests and woodlands, to maintain the rich avifaunal diversity of the region.

Diversity of avifauna in relation to habitat types in selected areas of Guinea savanna zone of Nigeria

This research presents the effect of activated lime and activated kaolin as a cement replacement on the properties of concrete. A natural clay sample known as kaolin and lime was activated through thermal activation and used to partially replaced cement. %-¾ size aggregate was used in the casting of concrete cubes using 150mm x 150mm x 150mm for grades 20 and 25, and 150mm x 150mm x 150mm mould using a mix ratio of 1:2:4 for grade 20 and 1:1 ½: 3 for grade 25. The water-cement ratio adopted for the experiment was 0.55. A preliminary laboratory investigation was conducted include; sieve analysis, bulk density, specific gravity, aggregate impact value (AIV), aggregate crushing value (ACV), flakiness test, and elongation test. Also setting time of cement and standard consistency test was carried out. A Different replacement was cast and cured for 7, 14, and 28 days, and crushed. The compressive strength was gotten and conclusion a drawn.

Effect of Activated Lime and Kaolin as Partial Replacement for Cement in Concrete Structure

Avian species in relation to plant community can be used to determine the health status of the ecosystem. Habitat destruction can lead to extinction of many bird species as well as other plant communities. The study was conducted for three (3) months to determine the variation in avian species diversity and abundance in four different adjacent habitat structures: Farmland, Gallery Forest, Rocky Outcrops and Uncultivated Grassland, all located at Zone 8 area of Lokoja, Kogi State. The Line Transect method was used to collect data from the entire study area where 2000 m transect was marked and further divided into short sections of 100m with 50m distance apart. Each marked section was sampled ten (10) times from 6:30 am to 10:00 am. Birds’ species encountered were  identified using the field guide and songs. Species diversity was determined using the Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H). The study recorded a total number of 4,490 individuals of 110 species belonging to 32 families. Farmland had the highest number of individuals with a total of 1,228 individuals belonging to 92 species, followed by the Gallery Forest with a total of 652 belonging to 95 species, followed by uncultivated grassland with a total of 339 individuals belonging to 65 species and the Rocky outcrop with a total of 122 individuals belonging to 55 species. Bird species abundance between the habitat types differ significantly (p<0.05). The Gallery Forest was the most diverse in bird species with a mean diversity index (H=3.55), though diversity between the habitat was not statistically different (p>0.05). The findings from this study indicate that Zone 8 is rich in avian species diversity. Therefore, there is need to conserve this area from activities that might contribute to habitat loss, which can lead to extinction of some bird species and possibly plants community in the nearest future.
