The Logical and Activity Learning for Enhanced Thinking Skills (LAL) method is an educational approach that fosters the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities in students using practical, experiential learning activities. Although LAL has demonstrated favorable effects on children’s cognitive growth, it presents various obstacles, including the requirement for tailored instruction and the complexity of tracking advancement. The present study presents a model known as the Deep Neural Networks-based Logical and Activity Learning Model (DNN-LALM) as a potential solution to tackle the challenges above. The DNN-LALM employs sophisticated machine learning methodologies to offer tailored instruction and assessment tracking, and enhanced proficiency in cognitive and task-oriented activities. The model under consideration has been assessed using a dataset comprising cognitive assessments of children. The findings indicate noteworthy enhancements in accuracy, precision, and recall. The model above attained a 93% accuracy rate in detecting logical patterns and an 87% precision rate in forecasting activity outcomes. The findings of this study indicate that the implementation of DNN-LALM can augment the efficacy of LAL in fostering cognitive growth, thereby facilitating improved monitoring of children’s advancement by educators and parents. The model under consideration can transform the approach toward LAL in educational environments, facilitating more individualized and efficacious learning opportunities for children.

Exploring the Computational Effects of Advanced Deep Neural Networks on Logical and Activity Learning for Enhanced Thinking Skills

The development of intelligent technologies gains popularity in the education field. The rapid growth of educational data indicates traditional processing methods may have limitations and distortion. Therefore, reconstructing the research technology of data mining in the education field has become increasingly prominent. In order to avoid unreasonable evaluation results and monitor the students’ future performance in advance, this paper comprehensively uses the relevant theories of clustering, discrimination and convolution neural network to analyze and predict students’ academic performance. Firstly, this paper proposes that the clustering-number determination is optimized by using a statistic which has never been used in the algorithm of K-means. Then, the clustering effect of K-means algorithm is tested by discriminant analysis. The convolutional neural network is introduced for training and testing data that are labeled with categories. The generated model can be used to predict prospective performance. Finally, in order to validate the prediction results, the effectiveness of the generated model is evaluated by using two metrics in two cross-validation methods. The experimental result demonstrates that the statistic not only solves the difficulty to determine the clustering number in K-means algorithm from an objective and quantitative point of view, but also improves the reliability of prediction results.

Analysis and Prediction of Students’ Academic Performance Based on Educational Data Mining

Student success rate is a significant indicator of the quality of the educational services offered at higher education institutions (HEIs). It allows students to make their plans to achieve the set goals and helps teachers to identify the at-risk students and make timely interventions. University decision-makers need reliable data on student success rates to formulate specific and coherent decisions to improve students’ academic performance. In recent years, EDM has become an effective tool for exploring data from student activities to predict their final grades. This study presents a case study for predicting the students’ final grades based on their activities in Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) and attendance in online lectures conducted via Zoom by applying statistical and machine learning techniques. The data set consists of the final grades for 105 students who study Object-Oriented Programming at the University of Plovdiv during the 2021–2022 year, data for their activities in the online course (7057 records), and attendance to lectures (738). The predictions are based on 46 attributes. The Chi-square test is utilized to assess the association between students’ final grades and event context (lectures, source code, exercise, and assignment) and the relationships between attendance at lectures and final results. The logistic regression model is utilized to assess the actual impact of event context on “Fail” students in a multivariate setup. Four machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, XGBoost, KNN, and SVM) are applied using 70% of training data and 30% of test data to predict the students’ final grades. Five-fold cross validation was also utilized. The results show correlations between the students’ final grades and their activity in the online course and between students’ final grades and attendance at lectures. All applied machine learning algorithms performed moderately well predicting the students’ final results, as the Random Forest algorithm obtained the highest prediction accuracy—78%. The findings of the study clearly show that the Random Forest algorithm may be used to predict which students will fail after eight weeks. Such data-driven predictions are significant for teachers and decision-makers and allow them to take measures to reduce the number of failed students and identify which types of learning resources or student activities are better predictors of the student’s academic performance.

Exploring Online Activities to Predict the Final Grade of Student

The availability of educational data obtained by technology-assisted learning platforms can potentially be used to mine student behavior in order to address their problems and enhance the learning process. Educational data mining provides insights for professionals to make appropriate decisions. Learning platforms complement traditional learning environments and provide an opportunity to analyze students’ performance, thus mitigating the probability of student failures. Predicting students’ academic performance has become an important research area to take timely corrective actions, thereby increasing the efficacy of education systems. This study proposes an improved conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) in combination with a deep-layer-based support vector machine (SVM) to predict students’ performance through school and home tutoring. Students’ educational datasets are predominantly small in size; to handle this problem, synthetic data samples are generated by an improved CGAN. To prove its effectiveness, results are compared with and without applying CGAN. Results indicate that school and home tutoring combined have a positive impact on students’ performance when the model is trained after applying CGAN. For an extensive evaluation of deep SVM, multiple kernel-based approaches are investigated, including radial, linear, sigmoid, and polynomial functions, and their performance is analyzed. The proposed improved CGAN coupled with deep SVM outperforms in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve when compared with solutions from the existing literature.

Predicting students’ academic performance at an early stage of a semester is one of the most crucial research topics in the field of Educational Data Mining (EDM). Students are facing various difficulties in courses like “Programming” and “Data Structures” through undergraduate programs, which is why failure and dropout rates in these courses are high. Therefore, EDM is used to analyze students’ data gathered from various educational settings to predict students’ academic performance, which would help them to achieve better results in their future courses. The main goal of this paper is to explore the efficiency of deep learning in the field of EDM, especially in predicting students’ academic performance, to identify students at risk of failure. A dataset collected from a public 4-year university was used in this study to develop predictive models to predict students’ academic performance of upcoming courses given their grades in the previous courses of the first academic year using a deep neural network (DNN), decision tree, random forest, gradient boosting, logistic regression, support vector classifier, and K-nearest neighbor. In addition, we made a comparison between various resampling methods to solve the imbalanced dataset problem, such as SMOTE, ADASYN, ROS, and SMOTE-ENN. From the experimental results, it is observed that the proposed DNN model can predict students’ performance in a data structure course and can also identify students at risk of failure at an early stage of a semester with an accuracy of 89%, which is higher than models like decision tree, logistic regression, support vector classifier, and K-nearest neighbor.
