A drainage device for attachment to a portion of the skin of an individual is provided. The device comprises a flange which sealingly engages the skin and has an opening therein to overlie a wound in the skin tissue. A ring member having a channel formed therein is mounted on a side of the flange opposite that side of the flange engaging the skin. A locking clip is connected to the ring member and extends laterally between portions thereof. A drainage strip is releasably held in the locking clip and inserted into the wound so that drainage of the wound occurs. A removable cover member grippingly engages the outer wall of the ring member to prevent the drainage from escaping the confines of the device.

A new and improved receptacle for collecting fecal matter from incontinent patients and in particular bedridden incontinent patients is disclosed. The fecal incontinence receptacle comprises generally a gasket for sealingly engaging an area substantially adjacent to a stoma or anus of a wearer to form a liquid-tight seal therebetween, a conduit joined to the gasket for providing a passageway for discharge received from the stoma or anus of the wearer to pass therethrough, and a disposable receptacle detachably connected to the conduit for collecting and disposing of fecal matter received from the conduit. The gasket comprises generally a flexible plastic material having an adhesive coating on one surface with a removeable protective sheet covering the adhesive coating. The receptacle comprises generally an opening at one end for detachably connecting the receptacle to the bottom opening of the conduit. The contents collected in the receptacle may then be disposed of by disconnecting the receptacle from the conduit for disposing of the contents collected therein without disconnecting the gasket from the wearer. A new or previously cleaned receptacle may be connected to the conduit. In addition, preferably the conduit of the fecal collecting receptacle is provided with venting capability for permitting gases accumulated therein to escape therefrom, passage capability for permitting an instrument, such as a thermometer, to be inserted into the receptacle for contact with the wearer and deodorizing capability for deodorizing undesirable odors emanating from the fecal matter collected in the receptacle.

A device for administering oral fluid to a patient from a container (18) has a nipple (14) connected to the container (18) by a tube (16). The nipple (14) is held on the patient's tongue. A valve (22) opens in response to the patient sucking or pressing the nipple to initiate a flow of fluid in the tube (16). A detector (92) responds to this flow and switches on a peristaltic pump (90) for a period determined by the setting of a controller (102) to deliver positively a suitable bolus of 2 to 6 ml to the patient. To give the patient time to swallow the bolus, the detector (92) is inhibited for a predetermined delay period after termination of the bolus and over the same delay period, the tube (16) remains pinched or clamped.

A gas-venting filter assembly for a collection device such as a colostomy pouch includes an outwardly extending recess in a wall of the pouch which is bridged by a filter unit that is designed for the free flow of gas therethrough. Preferably, the pouch recess is provided with an aperture in the form of a slit which provides suitable venting in normal use. Pressure build-up within the collection device resulting in ballooning of the device and/or discomfort to the wearer is avoided while at the same time protecting the filter assembly in use, and also facilitating leakage testing during manufacturing.
