In search of stress odours across species: Behavioural responses of rats to faeces from chickens and rats subjected to various types of stressful events
Vincent Bombail,Blandine Barret,Aurélien Raynaud,Nathalie Jerôme,Audrey Saint-Albin,Carsten Ridder,Anne Collin,Christine Leterrier,Laurence Guilloteau,Birte L. Nielsen +9 more
TL;DR: Using the ability of rats to distinguish between faeces odours from stressed and non-stressed conspecifics, it is investigated whether rats could detect stress status in another species (the chicken), which would suggest a commonality in odorous stress signatures across species.

The olfactory mucosa, first actor of olfactory detection, is sensitive to glucocorticoid hormone
Nicolas Meunier,Aurélien Raynaud,Mikaël Le Bourhis,Denise Grebert,Aurélie Dewaele,Adrien Acquistapace,Vincent Bombail +6 more
TL;DR: Findings support the idea that olfactory perception is altered in stressed animals, as glucocorticoids might enhance odour detection, starting at the first step of detection.

Chronic variable stress exposure in male Wistar rats affects the first step of olfactory detection.
TL;DR: While CVS rats exhibited several symptoms consistent with chronic stress exposure and depressive-like states, their odorant responses recorded at the olfactory mucosa level by electro-olfactogram were decreased, and increased apoptosis markers in the o aroma mucosa using Western Blot were observed.
