The purpose of this paper is to examine the relational capabilities developed by small and medium-sized suppliers in relationships with larger customers and to explore the influences of these relational capabilities on value co-creation and innovation. The paper presents a framework to evaluate the types of relational capabilities developed by small and medium-sized suppliers that enable them to manage in relationships with larger customers in the context of changing relationship requirements in the organic food sector. The methodology employed involves in-depth case studies of small and medium-sized UK organic food suppliers working in relationships with large retail supermarket customers. The findings suggest that the identified set of relational capabilities may be employed by small and medium-sized suppliers to enable them to inform and support innovation and the implementation of initiatives to create value in the eyes of their current and potential customers and concomitantly enhance their position as preferred suppliers. The findings were based on a small number of case studies of small UK organic food suppliers. Therefore, there is scope for future studies to explore the issues addressed in the paper in wider relationship, network and country settings. The research is among the first to offer a conceptual framework and an empirical contribution linking relational capabilities, value co-creation and innovation in small and medium-sized suppliers.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the underlying knowledge structure and evolution of industrial-buying research published between 1965 and 2015.,Bibliometric analysis is performed on 357 relevant papers (using principal component analysis and natural language processing, using VantagePoint® tools, used to generate bubble maps, auto-correlation maps and Aduna cluster maps), demonstrating how various factors involved in industrial buying have evolved, their degree of correlation with each other and the interrelationships of multiple factors concerning their co-occurrences.,The systematic mapping of industrial-buying research would illustrate the development of the significant factors in industrial-buying research. This paper provides both a global perspective on the leading countries and journals in the field and a robust roadmap for further investigation in this field.,This paper is limited to the data considered for analysis and may, therefore, overlook or underestimate some work that has not been captured while filtering databases related to industrial buying.,This paper facilitates near-future projection and trend analysis in industrial-buying research.,The methodology used is unique to the field of business-to-business marketing.

Delivery punctuality is essential in supply chain management, yet the cost of untimely delivery is usually assumed to be given or based on intuition and not quantified by facts.,The authors used a data set containing detailed transaction data for a nine-year period on orders and deliveries of sport goods. The methodology is based on applying a polynomial distributed lag model to longitudinal data on supply chain transactions.,The results indicate that small delivery delays up to two weeks decrease the sales by maximum 10% during a period of 3–4 weeks. Longer delays, up to 45 days, have a larger negative effect on sales, which can also last longer. For this case company, the estimated lost sales due to late deliveries (=5 days) were 5.1% of the delivery value. The longer delays got, the large the cost was: delays at least 45 days long were the most costly causing almost 40% of the estimated lost sales.,This study offers a methodology for quantifying lost sales due to delivery delays and estimating how long the poor delivery performance affects retailers' order behaviour.,The results give a quantitative decision-making tool for supply chain managers to estimate the profitability of investments in the supply chain performance, especially on improving punctuality.

We present a number of hypotheses relating four purchasing capabilities to two measures of purchasing’s contribution to innovation. The hypotheses are tested with data collected through a web-survey completed by 321 purchasing professionals in Danish production companies. Our results show that integrative, relational, innovative, and intelligence capabilities lead to more innovative purchasing. However, relational capabilities are not found to have significant effect on purchasing’s contribution to supply and practice innovation, i.e. new markets, new suppliers, and new purchasing practices, and the relationship between intelligence capabilities and purchasing’s contribution to products and production technology innovations depends on the level of innovative capabilities. The paper also examines a number of competing theoretical perspectives on the impact of capabilities on purchasing innovation relating to positive and negative complementarities between capabilities, clusters of distinct configurations, strengths and weakness perspectives, as well as the existence of a compensatory system of effects. The analysis finds that the model showing direct effects and interactions between capabilities is relatively better than the other models. Thus, we further show that certain interactions between capabilities are associated with purchasing innovation. The paper also addresses implications for research and practice.

Papers in purchasing and supply management: A capability-based perspective

This article aims to integrate capability-based theory into purchasing management. The research model presented in the article focuses on the effect of supplier evaluation capability and risk management capability on delivery performance. Further, the article explores the moderating effect of demand and technological uncertainty. The methodology relies on a multiple informant survey design with responses from purchasing and production managers in Danish manufacturing companies. Hypotheses are tested using regression analysis based on data collected from 197 firms. Risk management capability is found to increase delivery performance. Unexpectedly, supplier evaluation capability was found to decrease delivery performance. Demand uncertainty has a negative effect on delivery performance. Technological uncertainty had no effect on delivery performance. The results are discussed in detail in the final section of the article.
