The COVID-19 pandemic heavily impacted the travel and tourism industry, economies, livelihoods, public services, and opportunities globally. This is also observed in the small country of Brunei. As one of the few countries that have successfully mitigated COVID-19 transmissions, Brunei is slowly rebuilding its tourism industry through its community-based tourism (CBT). Following Sharma et al.’s resilience-based framework for reviving the tourism industry post-COVID-19 established in 2021, this study incorporates responses from semi-structured interviews with 16 local CBT owners on the challenges, the management, and the CBT initiatives during the height of the pandemic until today. These initiatives include diversifying more tour packages and utilising local resources and products. Despite the lockdown imposed by the government, which suspended businesses and restricted all travelling, local CBT operations flourished, generated more income for the owners, and created job opportunities for the community. Such efforts have caused the public to appreciate local cultures, the environment, and ultimately increase CBT experiences in the country. While shedding light on Brunei’s unique management of its tourism industry during the pandemic, this paper also demonstrates theoretical and conceptual contributions to the recent literature of resilient and transformational tourism and provide suggestions on how to manage CBT operations during these challenging times.

Coping with COVID-19: The Resilience and Transformation of Community-Based Tourism in Brunei Darussalam

Revenge travel has globally emerged as a dominant touristic behavior, signaling a rapid return of global tourism, but with a greater temptation for spending more and staying longer. Despite the expanding focus on global sustainable tourism, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the potential factors that build momentum for revenge travel. The aim of the present study was to develop and test a conceptualized model of revenge travel under the influence of pandemic fatigue, COVID-19-branded destination safety, and travel stimulus incentives. Drawing on the study data of international expats (N = 422) and using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM), the findings provide new evidence that revenge travel is significantly and positively influenced by pandemic fatigue. Interestingly, the empirical findings also support two positive moderations, highlighting that COVID-19-branded destination safety (CBDS) and travel stimulus incentives (TI) can significantly increase the impact of pandemic fatigue (PF) on revenge travel (RT). Based on prominent theories (i.e., theory of planned behavior, protection motivation theory, and incentive theory of motivation) and newly developed scales (i.e., RT, CBDS, and TI), the study highlights the dynamics of revenge travel as it sets the stage for global tourism to rebound stronger than ever. The implications include new challenges and ways forward through revenge travel as a stepping stone for global sustainable tourism.

Sustainable or a Butterfly Effect in Global Tourism? Nexus of Pandemic Fatigue, COVID-19-Branded Destination Safety, Travel Stimulus Incentives, and Post-Pandemic Revenge Travel

PurposeThis research discusses the role of service robots in gastronomic and dining experiences in a post–coronavirus disease (COVID) world.Design/methodology/approachThe research note draws on secondary data to analyse the use of robots as an important mechanism to address the impacts of global disease outbreaks on the food industry, as related to hospitality and tourism.FindingsHospitality and tourism services are highly affected by the current travel bans, lockdowns and health-related rules that have emerged to manage the current pandemic (COVID-19). This research showcases the role of service robots in food encounters in hospitality and tourism as agents that contribute to safe and innovative experiences.Originality/valueThis research note explores how the use of robots in tourism futures will not only transform food experiences, but it is also critical to sustainable development of communities and destinations in a future that will continuously have to deal with disease outbreaks and pandemics with continued travel mobilities.

PurposeThis case study urges the future of visitor economy to rely on regenerative tourism to make tourism systems resilience in the long run.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on published research and industry reports to discuss the future visitor economy and its impact on all dimensions of well-being focused on the case of Aotearoa New Zealand.FindingsResults show that post-pandemic tourism transformation must protect and promote local identities, and enhance and enrich visitor experiences with a focus on cultural and natural heritage.Originality/valueThe recovery of tourism must not implement regenerative tourism as a new specific type of tourism but as a holistic understanding of tourism futures that encompasses communities and the environment, and where visitors are committed to preserve and protect our natural and socio-cultural environment.

Regenerative tourism futures: a case study of Aotearoa New Zealand

The current pandemic (Covid-19) disrupted businesses and challenged societies all over the world. In particular, destinations are being urged to keep the attraction and value of their products and services in post-pandemic tourism recovery programs. Drawing from a qualitative study based on published reports and research, and using participant observation, this research analyses the situation of tourism in Akaroa, South Island of New Zealand, during the coronavirus outbreak and the first stages of the recovery process. Results of the research show that while crisis management led to the closure of the sector due to strict social and travel restrictions, the confinement measures adopted by the government and the progressive reopening of the country has resulted in a shift from “cruise tourism” into a gradual return of “domestic tourism”. This paper argues that local peoples’ perspectives must be kept in mind when developing a tourism recovery strategy. This case study also shows that because of the nature of changing working environment, there is potential to change local demography in the form of an increase in residents putting pressure on local infrastructure. In a rural and marine environment, local stakeholders’ attention is required to focus on “quality” of tourism rather than “quantity”. Nature-based resources and outdoor activities are expected to be the critical ingredients for tourism’s immediate and sustainable future.

Post-Pandemic Recovery: A Case of Domestic Tourism in Akaroa (South Island, New Zealand)

The global crisis derived from the rapid spread of the Covid-19 has led to the temporary closure of tourism services. As countries and regions come out of the lockdown, a new normal has automatically taken over. Among numerous business, restaurant services are the first to respond to this new normal way of living. As a consequence, this study reviews how restaurants are responding to the new context, where strict measures are required to grant social distance and a safe service provision. Based on published research and news media, this paper reveals how restaurants as a tourism system are resilient and adapting to the coronavirus. Results show the significance of technological, creative and do-it-yourself solutions. The study contributes to the further understanding of the coexistence of tourism and pandemics.

Transport infrastructure development, tourism and livelihood strategies: An analysis of isolated communities of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Transport infrastructural developments and roading networks, in particular, appear to have a significant effect on economic livelihoods. It is argued that transport infrastructural development is a major component of development which facilitates the flow of goods and services, increases productivity, investment, employment and income and ultimately leads to further economic activities. Transport infrastructure facilitates the tourism industry and provides access to the destination region for consumption of tourism products and increases tourism. Transport infrastructure also facilitates tourism product supply and creates a tourism experience. The production and consumption of the tourism product happens primarily in the destination area to which tourists travel. Host communities respond to introduced parameters such as road infrastructure development and tourism in various ways. Drawing on recent fieldwork in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, this paper aims to identify host communities' adaptation and diversification strategies in the context of tourism as a result of road networks. The paper uses qualitative research methods. The fieldwork was undertaken to understand livelihood diversification strategies in reference to tourism.
