Modal interaction of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy and BES systems

The future Indonesian power grid will have significant REGs, especially in Java Island. Wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) will be the dominating technologies in future Indonesian grid. Although REG can provide clean and sustainable energy, they also cause undesirable effects on system stability due to the uncertainty in their output and different dynamic characteristics. Battery energy storage system (BESS) has been considered as the promising candidate to manage the intermittency and low inertia associated with wind and PV in many future power systems. In addition to the normal functionality, the resilient wide-area power oscillation damping (POD) can be implemented in the BESS to damp the low-frequency oscillation in the system. This research proposes a method to design a resilient wide-area POD in BESS. A grey wolf optimiser (GWO) has been used to synthesise the resilient wide-area POD. The representative dynamic model of Java-Indonesian power system is used to evaluate the performance of the GWO-based resilient wide area POD. From the results, it is evident that the implementation of the proposed controller at BESS successfully damped the critical mode of the system. It is also observed that the proposed controller is robust against the failure of the input signal.

Transmission level PV plants have become a reality in recent years for encouraging more renewable energy. Large-scale PV plants can provide clean, affordable and sustainable electricity to the grid. However, they also introduce negative impacts as a result of intermittent power output and zero inertia characteristics. Hence, PV plants need an auxiliary device to overcome these concerns. One of the auxiliary devices that becoming favorable in recent years is Battery Energy Storage (BES). BES can provide fast response in providing constant active power to the grid or storing energy from PV plant along with a number of other capabilities. This paper investigates the influence of BES system installation at large-scale PV plant on small disturbance angle stability of interconnected power system. Analysis of sensitive eigenvalues, damping ratio, and phase portrait are carried out to investigate the impact of utilizing BES system in large-scale PV plant. From the simulation results, it was found that installing BES system in large-scale PV plant has significant influence in EM mode and BES system capacity also has a contribution in the dynamic behavior of the system.

Enabling BES in large PV plant for stability enhancement of power systems with high RES

The main objective of the power system is to provide good quality of power to the consumer. Continuous change in frequency by variation in load is a big challenge for generating unit to compensate it quickly as possible. Load Frequency Control (LFC) acts essential role to mitigate this problem by maintaining the frequency up to its desired level. PI and PID are conventional controllers can be used for LFC. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) gives better results than conventional controllers. With the help of BES System voltage can be build up to, as many systems required. But if conventional controllers and BES System used together then more effective result can be achieved rather than their individual use for LFC. This paper presents a comparison of multi-area LFC with and without conventional controllers and conventional controllers in the presence of BES System. By using these both strategies together gives the best result as which system required.

Multi-area Load Frequency Control by various conventional controller using Battery Energy Storage System

Supply-and-demand-side resource management and demand-side load management (DSLM) are important techniques for addressing power system uncertainties. Demand-side load management allows the load profile to be reshaped to reduce the peak demand and overall cost. Many demand-side load management problems have been solved using different demand response programmesprograms as well as conventional numeric and metaheuristic methods. However, it can be applied only toonly to a limited number of devices of certain types. Of the six direct load control demand response techniques for demand-side load management, the performance of the day-ahead load-shifting and flexible load curve DSLM techniques are compared in this study. These techniques can be used for a larger number of devices of more types. The demand-side load management problem is formulated as a minimization problem to achieve peak demand reduction and cost minimization. Novel metaheuristic optimizers are used to perform demand-side load management, and comparative analysis is conducted for the cost and peak load reduction. The simulation results are verified using the fmincon function of MATLAB. The simulation results indicate that the aforementioned algorithms can be applied to a larger number of devices of more types to achieve considerable savings by minimizing the cost and peak load demand. Moreover, the load-shifting demand-side load management technique is more beneficial from the system operator’s perspective than from the customer’s perspective. In contrast, the flexible load curve demand-side load management technique is more beneficial from the customer’s perspective.
