Lithium fluoride (LiF) films have been prepared on LaAlO3 (LAO), MgO, Si and TiN buffered Si substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Their surface morphology and structural qualities were studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Those films deposited on (100)MgO and (100)TiN buffered Si exhibited (200)LiF||(200)MgOand(200)LiF||(200)TiN||(200)Si epitaxial relationships, respectively. These results suggest that LiF films can be epitaxially grown on lattice match substrates and, for the first time, on (100)Si via a buffer layer. LiF grown on bare (100)Si and (100)LAO substrates, however, yielded films of (100) preferred orientation only. Lattice mismatch and thermal effects are invoked to explain these observations. The surfaces of the LiF films are very rough and covered with large globules due to splashing of molten droplets from the target. In order to remedy such deficiencies we used a shadow mask to reduce both the size and the number of these globules while maintaining the heteroepitaxial properties. As a result optically smooth LiF films of excellent structural quality are produced.

Epitaxial lithium fluoride films grown by pulsed laser deposition

The motivation for this article has been to try to understand the relative phenomenological differences between the behavior of the films of the high‐temperature superconductors like YBa2Cu3O7−δ deposited on (a) relatively insulating substrates (like LaAlO3) through sputtering technique and (b) highly metallic substrates (like stainless steel and inconel) through laser ablation method. It is observed that the most prominent Raman bands on LaAlO3 substrate falling near 337, 440, and 503 cm−1 have half widths (defined as the full width at half the maximum intensity) of 22, 42, and 38 cm−1, respectively. The half width gets nearly doubled on the metallic substrates. These results have been attributed to the metal‐superconductor interfacial interactions. Further, infrared reflectance measurements and the Kramers–Kronig analysis of the spectra reveal a large difference in the conductivity of the film on LaAlO3 compared to the films on metallic substrates.

Micro‐Raman and infrared reflectivity spectra of YBa2Cu3O7−δ deposited on LaAlO3 and stainless steel/inconel substrates

Nano-indentation studies of hard coatings prepared by laser ablation

In-depth micro-Raman study of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ thin films deposited on metallic substrates (hastelloy-C, inconel-600 and stainless steel-304) with a TiN buffer layer (YBCOM) and single crystal LaAlO 3 (YBCOL) substrate has been carried out in order to investigate the relative phenomenological differences between the behavior of these films on different substrates. A comparative study of films on these substrates revealed that the bandwidths of the prominent oxygen vibrations in YBCOM are significantly larger than those in the case of YBCOL and a defect induced, strong and broad feature around 570 cm −1 is always present in the Raman spectra of YBCOM. The broadening of bands and the presence of the 570 cm −1 band have been attributed to the disorder induced by buffer layer in YBCOM. Variation of the incident laser power ( P L ) from 1 to 10 mW, or a continuous irradiation were found to induce unusual, irreversible but, dissimilar changes in the Raman spectra of YBCOM and YBCOL. A significant change in the intensity distribution of oxygen vibrations and a decrease in the bandwidth of the out-of-phase mode in YBCOM films have been attributed to an improvement in the crystallinity of YBCOM films due to oxygen ordering in the CuO 2 planes. Whereas, in YBCOL, the laser irradiation causes oxygen removal from the CuO chains and formation of impurity phase BaCuO 2 . Distinct laser induced changes in the Raman spectra of YBCOM and YBCOL have been explained in terms of photoinduced ordering and local heating effects respectively.

Laser irradiation effects in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films on metallic and single crystal substrates: a micro-Raman study

Epitaxial growth of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− x (YBCO) layers on TiN(0 0 1) surfaces was explored, both with and without CeO 2 intermediate layers The epitaxial TiN layers were grown on MgO(0 0 1) and textured Ni substrates Thin CeO 2 (∼200 nm thick) and YBCO (∼300 nm thick) layers were grown on TiN-coated MgO substrates, using pulsed laser deposition While YBCO grown directly on TiN was of poor quality, a good epitaxial YBCO layer was obtained using a thin CeO 2 cap layer on the TiN A superconducting critical transition temperature ( T c ) of 89 K was measured by AC susceptibility The critical current density ( J c ) was 6×10 5 A/cm 2 obtained at 77 K by whole body transport current measurement in self-field using a 1 μV/cm criteria These results suggest that transition metal nitrides, such as TiN, are potentially useful as buffer layers for YBCO thin films Advantages of the nitride buffer layers compared to conventional oxide buffers include high electrical and thermal conductivity, better mechanical toughness, good diffusion barrier characteristics, and relative ease of deposition

Growth of YBCO thin films on TiN(001) and CeO2-coated TiN surfaces

Deposition of high-quality Y1Ba2Cu3O7- delta (YBCO) thin films on technologically important substrates such as stainless steel or high-temperature structural Ni-based superalloys is a difficult problem due to inherent interdiffusion problems between substrates and superconducting overlayers. To overcome this difficulty the concept of the buffer layer has been utilized and good quality YBCO thin films have been fabricated on Hastelloy (C), Inconel (600) and stainless steel (304) with titanium nitride (TiN) buffer layers. TiN is an excellent choice as a barrier layer on these metallic substrates due to low diffusivity, high thermal stability and thermal coefficient of expansion matching with the substrates. Because of the matching of the thermal expansion coefficient of TiN ( approximately (8.0-9.0)*10-6 K-1) with substrates ( approximately (9-10)*10-6 K-1) and YBCO ( approximately (12-13)*10-6 K-1) and its diffusion barrier characteristics, good quality high-Tc films have been grown on all substrates by single-chamber in situ laser processing at 600 degrees C. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, four-point AC electrical resistivity, scanning electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) techniques. AES depth profiling indicated no interdiffusion of Fe across the interface of TiN and substrates. c-axis-oriented good quality thin films (zero resistance above liquid nitrogen temperature and Jc approximately 104-105 A cm-2 at 77 K) were obtained on these substrates. Optimization of laser deposition parameters to obtain superconducting thin films on metallic substrates for practical applications will be discussed in this paper.
