Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquaculture Environments: Unravelling the Complexity and Connectivity of the Underlying Societal Drivers
Kelly Thornber,Abu Bashar,Md. Salahuddin Ahmed,Ashley G. Bell,Jahcub Trew,Mahmudul Hasan,Neaz A. Hasan,Md. Mehedi Alam,Dominique L. Chaput,Mohammad Mahfujul Haque,Charles R. Tyler +10 more
TL;DR: The Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) conceptual framework is applied to an aquaculture case study site in rural Bangladesh and shows how the DPSIR framework supports the integration of distinct social, microbiological, and metagenomic data sets to systematically characterize the complex network of societal drivers of AMR in these environments.

Metagenomic assessment of the diversity and ubiquity of antimicrobial resistance genes in Bangladeshi aquaculture ponds
Ashley G. Bell,Kelly Thornber,Dominique L. Chaput,Neaz A. Hasan,Md. Mehedi Alam,Mohammad Mahfujul Haque,Jo Cable,Ben Temperton,Charles R. Tyler +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors applied a metagenomic approach to assess the ARG composition in pond water from six finfish (tilapia and pangasius) farms in the Mymensingh division of North-central Bangladesh.

Novel pelagiphage isolate Polarivirus skadi is a polar specialist that dominates SAR11-associated bacteriophage communities at high latitudes.
Holger H. Buchholz,Luis M. Bolaños,Ashley G. Bell,Michelle Michelsen,Michael J. Allen,Ben Temperton +5 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that pelagiphage populations persist within a global viral seed bank, with environmental parameters and host availability selecting for a few ecotypes that dominate ocean viromes.

Long-read powered viral metagenomics in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea
Joanna Warwick-Dugdale,Funing Tian,Michelle Michelsen,Dylan R. Cronin,Karen Moore,Audrey Farbos,Lauren Chittick,Ashley G. Bell,Holger H. Buchholz,R. J. Parsons,Ahmed A. Zayed,Michael J. Allen,Matthew B. Sullivan,Ben Temperton +13 more
TL;DR: This study combines short and long-read sequencing to survey phage communities in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea, identifying 2,301 phage populations from 186 genera, with many lacking representation in global databases, highlighting viral diversity and turnover.

Influence of host phylogeny and water physicochemistry on microbial assemblages of the fish skin microbiome.
Ashley G. Bell,Jamie McMurtrie,Luis M. Bolaños,Jo Cable,Ben Temperton,Charles R. Tyler +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that different culturing (rearing) environments have a small but significant effect on the skin bacterial community compositions, and water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration and salinity significantly correlated with differences in beta-diversity but not necessarily alpha-diversity.
