The stress of life

We investigated the effect of verbal encouragement on maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) level of the triceps surae muscle group. Our secondary focus was to examine whether the effect of verbal encouragement on MVC level varies as a result of conscientiousness. While the participants performed plantar flexion, MVCs of the triceps surae muscle group were measured using rectified and smoothed surface electromyography (rsEMG) during the absence and presence of verbal encouragement. Participants completed questions from the Five Factor Personality Inventory concerning conscientiousness and were divided into high- and low-conscientiousness groups according to a median split. The sample included 30 female and 53 male elite athletes. In the entire cohort, there was no significant difference in MVCs with and without verbal encouragement. When the sample was partitioned by conscientiousness scores, verbal encouragement led to a significant increase in MVC in the low-conscientiousness group, whereas verbal encouragement led to a non-significant decrease in MVC in the high-conscientiousness group. Percentage change in MVC across experimental conditions was significantly different between the groups, with a 9.72% increase during verbal encouragement of the low-conscientiousness group, and a 2.47% decrease during verbal encouragement of the high-conscientiousness group.

Drawing on the ethnographic study of the Norwegian Facebook group Yes to wearing the cross whenever and wherever I choose , this article focuses on the emotive performance of conflict. The author delves into the multitude of ways in which emotion appears to drive the conflict(s) in Yes to wearing the cross whenever and wherever I choose . This Facebook group, by virtue of dealing with religion and identity issues contains typical trigger themes, which may lead audiences to emotively enact conflict. Still, these modes of enactment of conflict cannot be understood as a characteristic of religious strife alone. Drawing on Papacharissi’s concept of ‘affective publics’ this article compares the modes of conflict performance, the most salient frames, trigger themes, and emotive cues in this Facebook group to findings from other studies about mediatized conflict. The analysis demonstrates that mediatized conflicts appear to be emotively performed in very similar, at times even identical ways, across a variety of themes and contexts. P articipatory media audiences’ tendency to remediate conflicts in ways that draw on an abundance of emotional cues appears to be integral to the enactment of mediatized conflicts. It is argued that we ought to speak not only of affective publics but also of the politics of affect.

Background and objective: The most important psychological-social effect of computer games is their dependence and this can not only lead to financial problems, but can also lead to the appearance of some problems in school and in social communications with other people throughout life. Thus, the present study was done with the aim of determining the predictive power of the theory of planned behavior upon dependence to computer games among teenagers. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study 300 teenagers referring to affiliated playing clubs that were diagnosed, in the first stage of the study to be depended on computer games, were randomly selected. Data were collected through a researcher-made questionnaire consistent with the theory of planned behavior constructs and adolescents Gaming Dependence Questionnaire (GAS). The data were analyzed using t tests, regression, Mann-Whitney, chi-square test. Results: Median age of participants was 15. Regression results showed that the perceived of behavioral control (p<0.001), attitude (p<0.001) had predictable insight. And prognosticated consciousness of game dependence and that they intended to use games. Among the demographic variables, age, type of admission to clubs played, the number of hours of play during the week and the time referring to playing clubs, 96 of the variance in gaming dependency predictions was for their target population. Conclusion: The theory of planned behavior could predict the bulk of computer games. The results suggest that the use of the theory of planned behavior, focusing on attitudes and perceived behavioral control in educational interventions, can bring effective results. The effect of stress on visual selective attention regarding conscientiousness

Age rating of computer games from a psychological perspective: a delfi study

Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of stress on selective and focused attention according to the personality factor of agreeableness. Methods: The sample group consisted of 60 male university students who were selected via multi-session random sampling with respect to neuropsychological control variables. The subjects were divided into two experimental and one control groups (20 subjects each). After administering cognitive stressful tasks, the visual selective and focused attention of subjects in the experimental groups were assessed. The visual selective and focused attention of the subjects in the control group was assessed without administering the aforementioned tasks. Sum of errors in counting and classification errors designated the visual attention indexes. Results: Results indicated that stress leads to significant increase in counting and classification errors (p<0.001). In addition, agreeableness further increased the counting error (p<0.001) and classification error (p<0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that stress reduces the visual selective and focused attention on neutral stimuli and factor A intensifies this negative effect.
