The first acidity scale to be established in a pure solvent other than water was the result of the pioneering work of Conant, Wheland, and McEwen in ether or ben~ene .~ During the past 20 years an ion-pair acidity scale covering an \"effective pKa rangefrom about 15 to 40 has been developed in cyclohexylamine (CHA),6 and similar studies in other low-dielectric-constant solvents including 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME)7a and tetrahydrofuran (THF)7b*c have been carried out. A more limited ion-pair acidity scale has been developed in liquid NH,.7d Also, during this period, acidity scales have been established in the polar non-hydrogenbond-donor (NHBD) solvents dimethyl sulfoxide (Me$0)8 and N-methylpyrrolidin-2-one (NMP)? which have relatively high dielectric constants. The pK,'s measured in these solvents differ from ion-pair pK,'s in that they are absolute, in the sense that they are based on Me2S0 and NMP as the standard states, which allows direct comparisons to be made with H20 and gas-phase pK,'s. A truly absolute acidity scale has been established in the gas phase, which, for the first time, provides intrinsic measures of structural effects free of solvent effects.1° Our purpose in this Account is (a) to discuss briefly acidities in various solvent media, (b) to present a table of representative equilibrium acidity constants in M e 8 0 solution, and (c) to illustrate ways in which these pK, data can be used. In an accompanying Account we compare acidities in Me2S0 solution with intrinsic gas-phase acidities and discuss some of the insights into solvation effects provided thereby. Multitargeting by curcumin as revealed by molecular interaction studies

Curcumin, with its recent success as an anti-tumor agent, has been attracting researchers from wide ranging fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The chemical structure of curcumin has two o-methoxy phenols attached symmetrically through α,β-unsaturated β-diketone linker, which also induces keto–enol tautomerism. Due to this, curcumin exhibits many interesting photophysical and photochemical properties. The absorption maximum of curcumin is ∼408–430 nm in most of the organic solvents, while the emission maximum is very sensitive to the surrounding solvent medium (460–560 nm) and the Stokes’ shift varied from 2000 to 6000 cm−1. The fluorescence quantum yield in most of the solvents is low and reduced significantly in presence of water. The fluorescence lifetime is short (<1 ns) and displayed multi-exponential decay profile. The singlet excited states of curcumin decay by non-radiative processes contributed mainly by intra- and intermolecular proton transfer with very low intersystem crossing efficiency. Polarity, π-bonding nature, hydrogen bond donating and accepting properties of the solvent influence the excited state photophysics of curcumin in a complex manner. The triplet excited states of curcumin absorb at 720 nm and react with oxygen to produce singlet molecular oxygen. The photodegradation of curcumin produces smaller phenols and the photobiological activity of curcumin is due to the generation of reactive oxygen species.

Being lipophilic in nature, the water solubility of curcumin could be enhanced upon the addition of surfactants, polymers, cyclodextrins, lipids and proteins. Changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of curcumin have been found useful to follow its interaction and site of binding in these systems. Curcumin fluorescence could be employed to follow the unfolding pattern and structural changes in proteins. The intracellular curcumin showed more fluorescence in tumor cells than in normal cells and fluorescence spectroscopy could be used to monitor its preferential localization in the membrane of tumor cells. This review, presents the current status of research on the photophysical, photochemical and photobiological processes of curcumin in homogeneous solutions, bio-mimetics and living cells. Based on these studies, the possibility of developing curcumin, as a bimolecular sensitive fluorescent probe is also discussed.

The effect of salinity and temperature on solubility of oxygen and respiratory rate in oxygen-dependent marine invertebrates

The crystal structure of sarcosine in pure form has been determined at low temperature (135 K). The crystals are othorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with unit cell dimensions a = 6.687(2) A, b = 7.899(3) A, c = 8.607(3) A. On the basis of 988 reflections with intensities larger than 3 sigma (I) the structure was refined to a conventional R-factor of 0.034 to give e.s.d. in bond lengths of 0.002 A and 0.2 degrees in angles. The molecule is extended and exists in the zwitterionic form. There is a small deviation from planarity in the alpha-amino acid group as well as in the main chain.
