Isoflurane 05% in oxygen for conscious sedation was compared with placebo (oxygen) and with an equipotent concentration of nitrous oxide in oxygen, in patients scheduled for surgical removal of bilateral, similarly impacted lower third molars The majority of patients were sedated with 05% isoflurane in oxygen and preferred it to both placebo and nitrous oxide in oxygen It produced good operating conditions with cooperative patients and had no significant effect on vital signs There were no significant intra- or postoperative adverse effects Patients were street fit within 10 minutes after the end of the operation

Isoflurane for conscious sedation

SUMMARY Methoxyflurane has been used to provide analgesia for burns dressings on sixty occasions in eleven patients. It was administered by way of a new, disposable vaporizer, the Analgizer, which is described. Three patients required either supplementary analgesics or tranquillizers. No side effects were noted, and patient acceptance of the Analgizer was good. This method is thought to represent an advance over previous methods of analgesia for burns dressings, since there is no undue sedation, pre-operative starvation is unnecessary, and venepunctures are avoided.

Methoxyflurane analgesia for burns dressings: experience with the analgizer

In a study using patients as their own controls, 0.35 per cent v/v methoxyflurane in air, self-administered from a Cardiff inhaler and inhaled intermittently, has afforded better analgesia than 0.5 per cent v/v trichloroethylene similarly administered. Methoxyflurane has been shown to improve the patient's "mood" during burns dressings. A further study into the effects of two inhalers producing approximately 0.3 per cent v/v methoxyflurane and approximately 0.5 per cent v/v methoxyflurane showed little difference in the analgesia afforded, but both were equally safe. Methoxyflurane is not a satisfactory analgesic for burns dressings in children aged 5 years and under.

Intermittent inhalation of methoxyflurane and trichloroethylene as analgesics in burns dressings procedures

SUMMARY Methoxyflurane, administered from a Cardiff Penthrane inhaler was used as an analgesic agent for burns dressings and other painful ward procedures in a series of 36 children, aged 4 months to 13 years, on 94 occasions. No other intraoperative analgesics were required and preoperative sedation was used only six times in four patients. Preoperative starvation was unnecessary and no side effects were observed. Of the 94 administrations, analgesia was assessed as "very good" or "good" on 67 (71%) occasions.

Methoxyflurane analgesia for burns dressings and other painful ward procedures in children

The requirements for analgesia for burns dressings are discussed. Methoxyflurane has proved satisfactory in a clinical trial, and can be administered by one of two types of vaporizer. The possibility of nephrotoxicity due to methoxyflurane has not been eliminated.
