Spin textures with nontrivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, have attracted attention as a source of unconventional magnetic, transport, and optical phenomena. Recently, a new generation of topological spin textures has been extensively studied in itinerant magnets; in contrast to the conventional ones induced, e.g., by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems, they are characterized by extremely short magnetic periods and stable even in centrosymmetric systems. Here we review such new types of topological spin textures with particular emphasis on their stabilization mechanism. Focusing on the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom in itinerant electron systems, we show that itinerant frustration, which is the competition among electron-mediated interactions, plays a central role in stabilizing a variety of topological spin crystals including a skyrmion crystal with unconventional high skyrmion number, meron crystals, and hedgehog crystals. We also show that the essential ingredients in the itinerant frustration are represented by bilinear and biquadratic spin interactions in momentum space. This perspective not only provides a unified understanding of the unconventional topological spin crystals but also stimulates further exploration of exotic topological phenomena in itinerant magnets.

Topological spin crystals by itinerant frustration.

Despite the rapid progress in the field of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, most of the QSH systems studied up to now are based on crystalline materials. Here we propose that the QSH effect can be realized in quasicrystal lattices (QLs). We show that the electronic topology of aperiodic and amorphous insulators can be characterized by a spin Bott index B_{s}. The nontrivial QSH state in a QL is identified by a nonzero spin Bott index B_{s}=1, associated with robust edge states and quantized conductance. We also map out a topological phase diagram in which the QSH state lies in between a normal insulator and a weak metal phase due to the unique wave functions of QLs. Our findings not only provide a better understanding of electronic properties of quasicrystals but also extend the search of the QSH phase to aperiodic and amorphous materials that are experimentally feasible.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Spin Bott Index in a Quasicrystal Lattice

The instability toward a magnetic skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric trilayer magnets is investigated based on a spin model with layer-dependent Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find various types of skyrmion crystal phases with different skyrmion numbers in a low-temperature phase diagram by performing the simulated annealing. In addition to the N\'eel skyrmion crystal phase that is expected to emerge in the presence of the polar-type Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we obtain the skyrmion crystal phases characteristics of the layered system: the twisted surface skyrmion crystal, anti-skyrmion crystal, and high-topological-number skyrmion crystal phases. The rich magnetic phases are brought about by the synergy among the layer-dependent Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction, interlayer exchange interaction, and an external magnetic field. Our results indicate that the layer degree of freedom at the surface and heterostructures provides a good platform to engineer and design the topological spin textures.

Skyrmion crystals in centrosymmetric triangular magnets under hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy

We theoretically study a stabilization mechanism of the skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets with a bilayer structure. We show that the interplay between a layer-dependent staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that arises from the absence of local inversion symmetry and the interlayer exchange interaction gives rise to a plethora of multiple-$Q$ states including the skyrmion crystal with a quantized topological number. By performing the simulated annealing for the bilayer triangular-lattice model under an external magnetic field, we demonstrate that the skyrmion forms the triangular-shaped crystals with different helicities in each layer owing to the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Although the relative positions of the skyrmion core in each layer are different depending on the sign of the interlayer exchange interactions, the skyrmion crystal phases robustly appear under both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interlayer interactions. We also find another two triple-$Q$ states with a uniform scalar chirality but without a quantized topological number in the low- and high-field regions. Especially, the low-field triple-$Q$ state exhibits the opposite sign of the scalar chirality to the skyrmion crystal, which is not found in the single-layer system. Our results indicate that the lack of local inversion symmetry in the lattice structure is another key ingredient to induce topological spin textures in centrosymmetric magnets.

Skyrmion crystal and spiral phases in centrosymmetric bilayer magnets with staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We report a microscopic electronic mechanism for nanoscale skyrmion formation and topological metalicity originating from Rashba and double-exchange physics. The results are based on hybrid simulations in a model that explicitly retains itinerant electronic degrees of freedom. A simple physical picture is provided via an effective short-range spin model. We identify hexagonal and square lattice arrangements of skyrmions in two different regimes of the parameter space. Sparse skyrmions emerge at finite temperatures as excitations of the ferromagnetic phase. The skyrmion states are characterized as topological metals via explicit calculations of the Bott index and the Hall conductivity. Oscillations in local density of states are shown to arise from a combination of confinement effects and emergent gauge-fields. We also emphasize the importance of a consistent treatment of spin-orbit coupling for calculating electronic properties of metals hosting unconventional magnetic textures such as skyrmions.

Electronic mechanism for nanoscale skyrmions and topological metals

We discover magnetic phases hosting highly elusive and technologically important antiferromagnetic skyrmion quasiparticles in a model for a Rashba-coupled Hund insulator. The results are based on unbiased simulations of a classical superexchange model derived, in this work, from a realistic microscopic electronic Hamiltonian. We also discover a skyrmion density wave ground state characterized by a $(Q,Q)$ modulation in the local skyrmion density map. A unique inhomogeneous state characterized by a circular pattern in the spin structure factor and filamentary real-space textures is identified as the parent of sparse antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We predict that the magnetic states reported here can be realized in thin films of multiorbital systems involving $4d$ or $5d$ transition metals.
