BACKGROUND: 

Donor retention is vital to blood collection agencies. Past research has highlighted the importance of early career behavior for long-term donor retention, yet research investigating the determinants of early donor behavior is scarce. Using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study sought to identify the predictors of first-time blood donors' early career retention.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: 

First-time donors (n = 256) completed three surveys on blood donation. The standard TPB predictors and self-identity as a donor were assessed 3 weeks (Time 1) and at 4 months (Time 2) after an initial donation. Path analyses examined the utility of the extended TPB to predict redonation at 4 and 8 months after initial donation.

RESULTS: 

The extended TPB provided a good fit to the data. Post-Time 1 and 2 behavior was consistently predicted by intention to redonate. Further, intention was predicted by attitudes, perceived control, and self-identity (Times 1 and 2). Donors' intentions to redonate at Time 1 were the strongest predictor of intention to donate at Time 2, while donors' behavior at Time 1 strengthened self-identity as a blood donor at Time 2.

CONCLUSION: 

An extended TPB framework proved efficacious in revealing the determinants of first-time donor retention in an initial 8-month period. The results suggest that collection agencies should intervene to bolster donors' attitudes, perceived control, and identity as a donor during this crucial post–first donation period.

Predicting the retention of first-time donors using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior

Introduction: Blood donors are committed to social responsibility, saving lives and improving the health of others. The necessity for blood and blood products in Mongolia is getting higher and higher every year which probably is associated with high-mortality-rate diseases. Materials and Method: This is a cross section survey identified knowledge, attitude and practice of the population on voluntary non-remunerated blood donation by using pre-developed same questionnaire before and after IEC/BCC intervention among general population on blood donation. Data collection was conducted in 5 provinces, 1 soum, 6 districts of Ulaanbaatar City of Mongolia. Population of age of 18-60 years was randomly selected by the survey by using random sampling method. SPSS software version 21 was used for data analysis of the survey. Result: The survey covered in a total of 7633 (baseline, 2015-3852, follow up, 2019-3782) people and the respondent coverage rate was 100%.the majority of them were had higher education (40.8%, 3115), and completed secondary education (secondary and high) (28.9% 2204), khalkh (84.8%, 6472), married (63.1%, 4818), and single (28.7%, 2194).It has been defined that highly educated and female respondents were more knowledgeable than the rest of the group. There were not observed significantly differ on religion, and living location of the person. Knowledge is increased by growing the age of survey respondents. 6.3% of surveyed respondents are regardless of age group and gender had a misconception. Compared with the baseline survey, correct answer percentage level increased by 4.6-64.8% each age group and an average it was 21.8%. In young ages, the population was more likely to donate blood. Based on both survey finding, 82.2% of respondents who gave blood is doing it because they are like to help others and to save people's lives (א=16.37, p<0.0001). In Conclusion: Maintaining public awareness and sustaining regular blood donor is an integral part of establishing a blood donor program. In this regard based on our survey finding evidencebased IEC/BCC campaign has effectively improve awareness general population on sustainable blood programing. Drivers of consumers' behavioral intention toward private umbilical cord blood banking: a review.

Ethnic/racial minorities are under-represented in blood donor populations in most developed countries. This is of particular concern where minorities differ from a country's majority population in terms of blood or tissue typing, especially where type matching is required for effective management of rare disorders such as sickle-cell disease that require multiple transfusions. This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of interventions to increase blood donation among ethnic/racial minority populations in developed countries. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and ProQuest on 20 March 2017 with no date restrictions and supplemented this with searches on Google Scholar, blood collection agency websites, reference lists of included studies, and a forward search of citations of included studies. We included intervention studies designed to increase recruitment and/or retention of adult, ethnic/racial minority blood donors in developed countries. The review identified eight studies reported in nine publications. Six were conducted in the USA with African Americans. Four studies reported on multifaceted, community-based interventions; three reported on one-off information and educational video interventions, presented face-to-face, or delivered via post or e-mail. The level of evidence for efficacy was low, and the majority of studies were assessed as having some risk of bias related to one or more methodological issues. All eight studies reported positive outcomes in blood donation and/or intention to donate. Seven trials found that the intervention increased presentation for donation, and three found an increase in the percentage of new donors from the ethnic minority targeted. The review findings demonstrate that it is possible to design and implement effective interventions to motivate individuals from ethnic/racial minority groups to donate blood. One-off interventions may be as effective as multifaceted, community-based interventions. There was insufficient evidence to recommend particular interventions, and future research should empirically assess alternative interventions using robust study designs.

Sutton A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University Virginia Commonwealth University, 2017 Advisor: William Korzun, Ph.D., DABCC, MT(ASCP), Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences A continuous need for blood products, specifically for those who require frequent transfusions, such as individuals with sickle cell disease, warrants the need for targeted interventions to increase blood donations from underrepresented populations. One population in particular, African Americans, only account for 1% of blood donors in the United States. Literature indicates numerous reasons why this population is underrepresented amongst donors, including fear, lack of knowledge about the blood donation, and specific to this population, lack of trust in the medical community. This study involves the development, implementation, and assessment of a targeted educational approach, incorporating the Theory of Planned Behavior and various teaching methods, to motivate African Americans non-donors to attempt to donate blood. Participants attended a 1-hour educational session where they completed two surveys, one before the session and one directly after. A third survey was completed 2 months after the session. Of the 155 individuals enrolled in the study, 142 subjects were included in the data analysis. Sixteen percent of the study participants presented to donate as a result of attending the educational session. This resulted in a statistically significantly higher proportion of African Americans presenting to donate than the current proportion in Virginia. Analysis of results from the first two surveys indicated that subjective norm and attitude were significant predictors of one’s intent to donate blood, while perceived behavioral control was not a factor. The educational session increased survey scores related to intent to donate in comparison to scores obtained prior to the session. While this study resulted in a significant proportion of new donors, there is still a need for interventions that will focus specifically on changing attitudes toward blood donation and a need for methods to motivate African Americans to educate individuals in the community on the importance of becoming blood donors.
