While experts in various fields discuss the potential of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, the utilization of carbon dioxide as chemical feedstock is also attracting renewed and rapidly growing interest. These approaches do not compete; rather, they are complementary: CCS aims to capture and store huge quantities of carbon dioxide, while the chemical exploitation of carbon dioxide aims to generate value and develop better and more-efficient processes from a limited part of the waste stream. Provided that the overall carbon footprint for the carbon dioxide-based process chain is competitive with conventional chemical production and that the reaction with the carbon dioxide molecule is enabled by the use of appropriate catalysts, carbon dioxide can be a promising carbon source with practically unlimited availability for a range of industrially relevant products. In addition, it can be used as a versatile processing fluid based on its remarkable physicochemical properties.

Chemical Technologies for Exploiting and Recycling Carbon Dioxide into the Value Chain

The experimental solubility of dibenzofuran in near-critical and supercritical carbon dioxide and the solid–liquid–vapor (SLV) equilibrium line for the CO 2  + dibenzofuran system are reported. The built in-house static view cell apparatus used in these measurements is described. The solubility of naphthalene in supercritical CO 2 and the CO 2  + naphthalene SLV line are also determined in order to assess the reliability and accuracy of the measurement technique. The solubility of dibenzofuran in carbon dioxide is determined at 301.3, 309.0, 319.2, 328.7 and 338.2 K in the 6–30 MPa pressure range. Solubility data are correlated using the Chrastil model and the Peng–Robinson equation of state. This equation is also used to predict the CO 2  + dibenzofuran SLV line. Results show the feasibility of using supercritical CO 2 to extract dibenzofuran.

High-pressure phase equilibria for the binary system carbon dioxide + dibenzofuran

The experimental solubility of dibenzofuran in modified supercritical carbon dioxide is measured at (318.2, 328.2, and 338.2) K in the (9 to 21) MPa pressure range using a built-in-house static view cell apparatus. CO2 is modified using methanol and acetic acid in the composition range of (3.5 to 5.5) mol %. Results are compared with those previously obtained for pure carbon dioxide, and the modifier effect is discussed. Solubility data obtained are correlated at each of the temperatures studied. The correlation equations may be used to predict the dibenzofuran solubility in methanol or acetic-acid-modified CO2 within the composition and pressure intervals studied or at values close to the interval limits. Results show the feasibility of using modified supercritical CO2 to extract dibenzofuran.

Cosolvent Effect of Methanol and Acetic Acid on Dibenzofuran Solubility in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

This paper deals with a physical model for the extraction of PAH perylene from spiked silt by supercritical CO 2 based on numerous extraction experiments attained from a pilot plant. The solubility of perylene in dense C0 2 is calculated by a HSVDW-model and the ternary equilibrium of soil, perylene, and CO 2 is described by BET-isotherms, keeping in mind that adsorption phenomena mainly influence the extraction time of the process. Due to the dominant effect of PAH-adsorption on the soil, the extraction time is shortened by increasing temperature while the pressure must be optimized for each mass flow and temperature, respectively.

Modeling the extraction of perylene from spiked soil material by dense carbon dioxide

Production costs for supercritical fluid extraction of natural substances are significantly influenced by the energy requirement. Energy costs are calculated for a large number of process variants of four different types of process with separation at supercritical pressure. The process parameter ranges investigated are: extraction pressure, 30–50 MPa; extraction temperature, 40–100°C; separation pressure, 8–49.75 MPa. The extraction of oil from soybeans is taken as an example. The results, presented in tables and diagrams, also apply to the extraction of other oils whose solubility in CO2 resembles that of soybean oil. Extraction at 50 MPa and 100°C is recommended from energy considerations, but a lower extraction temperature may be required to preserve the quality of the extracted oil. The heat exchanger between extractor and separator can be omitted. The separation pressure should not exceed 15 MPa. The calculated energy costs, together with data for the kg soybean oil produced per kg CO2, form the basis for designing an economically optimized supercritical fluid extraction plant.

Bodenverunreinigungen sind nahezu ausschlieslich die Folge fruherer industrieller Nutzung der Flachen als Produktionsstandort oder als Deponie. Aufgrund des vielfaltigen Schadstoffspektrums und der standortspezifischen Bodeneigenschaften besteht ein fortwahrender Bedarf, erprobte Sanierungsverfahren zu verbessern und neue verfahrenstechnische Ideen in Sanierungskonzepte aufzunehmen. Als Alternative zur konventionellen Extraktion mit flussigen Losungsmitteln bietet sich die Gasextraktion mit verdichteten Gasen an, die seit einiger Zeit am Lehrstuhl fur Thermodynamik der Universitat Dortmund untersucht wird. Nachfolgend wird das Verfahrensprinzip der Gasextraktion vorgestellt und die Verfahrensoptimierung anhand experimenteller Ergebnisse und der Abschatzung der Verfahrenskosten diskutiert.
