LUD 00-009: Phase 1 study of intensive course immunization with NY-ESO-1 peptides in HLA-A2 positive patients with NY-ESO-1-expressing cancer
Armin Bender,Julia Karbach,Antje Neumann,Dirk Jäger,Salah-Eddin Al-Batran,Akin Atmaca,Eckhart Weidmann,Melina Biskamp,Sacha Gnjatic,Linda Pan,Eric W. Hoffman,Lloyd J. Old,Alexander Knuth,Elke Jäger +13 more
TL;DR: A rapid induction of high magnitude NY-ESO-1 peptide-specific T-cell responses detectable already on day 15-22 of immunization is observed, indicating that a specific immune response ofhigh magnitude and early onset may be more effective in eliminating minimal residual disease in adjuvant treatment situations and in preventing tumor progression due to immune escape mechanisms.

Tumor‐reactive CD8+ T‐cell clones in patients after NY‐ESO‐1 peptide vaccination
Julia Karbach,Sacha Gnjatic,Claudia Pauligk,Armin Bender,Markus Maeurer,Joachim L. Schultze,Kerstin Nadler,Claudia Wahle,Alexander Knuth,Lloyd J. Old,Elke Jäger +10 more
TL;DR: The results show that immunization with NY‐ESO‐1 peptides leads to strong tumor‐reactive CD8+ T‐cell responses, and suggest that approaches to peptide vaccination may be improved to induce higher numbers of antigen‐specific T‐cells and to selectively increase the proportion of CD8-T‐cells that have the capacity to recognize and eliminate tumor cells.

HLA-DP4 expression and immunity to NY-ESO-1: correlation and characterization of cytotoxic CD4+ CD25- CD8- T cell clones.
Eduardo Huarte,Julia Karbach,Sacha Gnjatic,Armin Bender,Dirk Jäger,Michael Arand,Djordje Atanackovic,Jonathan Skipper,Gerd Ritter,Yao-Tseng Chen,Lloyd J. Old,Alexander Knuth,Elke Jäger +12 more
TL;DR: The Th1 phenotype and effector functions of the CD4+ T cell clones described here provide an important rationale for the activation of antigen-specific CD4- T cells along with CD8+ T cells in cancer vaccination strategies.

Identification of new NY-ESO-1 epitopes recognized by CD4+ T cells and presented by HLA-DQ B1 03011.
Julia Karbach,Claudia Pauligk,Armin Bender,Sacha Gnjatic,Kerstin Franzmann,Claudia Wahle,Dirk Jäger,Alexander Knuth,Lloyd J. Old,Elke Jäger +9 more
TL;DR: The specific production of IFN‐γ and TNF‐α suggests that the NY‐ESO‐1‐specific CD4+ T‐cell clones belong to the Th1 subtype, which broadens the repertoire of epitopes that can be used to monitor NY‐ ESO‐ 1‐specific spontaneous and vaccine‐induced T‐ cell responses in cancer patients.

Recombinant vaccinia/fowlpox NY-ESO-1 vaccines induce both humoral and cellular NY-ESO-1-specific immune responses in cancer patients.
Elke Jager,Julia Karbach,Sacha Gnjatic,Antje Neumann,Armin Bender,Danila Valmori,Maha Ayyoub,Erika Ritter,Gerd Ritter,Dirk Jäger,Dennis Panicali,Eric A. Hoffman,Linda Pan,Herbert F. Oettgen,Lloyd J. Old,Alexander Knuth +15 more
TL;DR: In several patients with melanoma, there was a strong impression that the natural course of the disease was favorably influenced by vaccination, and the vaccines were well tolerated either individually or together.
