Reverse logistics (RL) and the closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) are integral parts of the holistic waste management process. One of the important end-of-life (EOL) products considered in the RL/CLSC is Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)/E-waste. Numerous research papers were published in the RL and CLSC disciplines focusing WEEE separately. However, there is no single review article found on the product-specific issues. To bridge this gap, a total of 157 papers published between 1999 and May 2017 were selected, categorized, analyzed using content analysis method. The method involves four steps: material collection, descriptive analysis, category selection and material evaluation. For the systematic literature review, the steps were followed and four main types of research in the field of RL and CLSC of E-waste, namely designing and planning of reverse distribution, decision making and performance evaluation, conceptual framework, and qualitative studies were identified and reviewed. Research gaps in literature were diagnosed to suggest future research opportunities. The review first of its kind that may provide a useful reference for academicians, researchers and industry practitioners for a better understanding of WEEE focused RL/CLSC activities and research.

Sustainability Metrics for Real Case Applications of the Supply Chain Network Design Problem: A Systematic Literature Review

In the extant literature, circular economy (CE) is considered a driver for sustainable development of the manufacturing sector, being it an industrial paradigm aiming at regenerating resources. CE is transferred to manufacturing companies through the adoption of different Circular Manufacturing (CM) strategies (e.g., recycling, remanufacturing, etc.). Nowadays, manufacturers are struggling to implement these strategies to limit their resource consumption and pollution generation. To enable their adoption, the extant literature unveiled the importance to control along the entire value chain different types of resource flows (i.e., material, energy, and information). Nevertheless, while for material and energy management some advancements were achieved, information management and sharing remains one of the major barriers in adopting these strategies. The present work, through a systematic literature review, aims to identify the relevant information and data required to support the manufacturer’s decision process in adopting and managing the different CM strategies to pursue the transition towards CM. Furthermore, based on the results obtained, this research proposes a theoretical framework. It elucidates the four main areas to be managed by manufacturers in adopting CM strategies and it provides to the manufacturer an overview of what should be updated and upgraded inside the company to embrace CM strategies.

A Systematic Literature Review on Data and Information Required for Circular Manufacturing Strategies Adoption

Decisions on waste management systems are subjected to multiple sustainability criteria, including environmental, social, and economic criteria. Decision makers therefore can benefit from systematic approaches to evaluate different waste management options considering multiple sustainability criteria. This study reviews multi criteria decision making (MCDM) and life cycle assessment (LCA) approaches that assess the sustainability of waste management systems. We present a framework for integrating LCA-MCDM approaches. First, we identified the most used MCDM methods for waste management systems published in the literature and highlight the technical and sustainability criteria used in the literature. Then, key issues in LCA studies of waste management systems were reviewed and discussed. The review results indicated that there are only a limited number of studies that integrated LCA and MCDM to assess the sustainability of waste management systems. Furthermore, more than half of the studies that did use the integrated approach failed to consider all three pillars of sustainability. There is also a lack of detailed information on the life cycle inventory used for the LCA part which reduces the reproducibility and clarity of the studies. In addition, the normalization and weighting methods to convert environmental impact categories for each scenario into single scores were often neither clearly explained nor justified. Also, the detailed information about experts involved in the decision-making process as well as the procedure of acquiring their opinions were not fully presented. Finally, the LCA and MCDM approaches, relevant sustainability criteria and related standards were used to present a set of recommendations for performing an integrated LCA-MCDM study that ensure scientifically robust, meaningful and reliable decisions. 

Integrating life cycle assessment and multi criteria decision making for sustainable waste management: Key issues and recommendations for future studies

A circular economy approach requires methods of resource management that are sustainable and efficient. A crucial process in waste management is collection and transportation of waste. One of the most valuable streams is waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). There is a variety of disposal methods available for residents and a variety of collection methods for companies. The scope of this study includes the application of artificial immune systems in planning routes of vehicles in a mobile program and in placement of containers in stationary collections of WEEE. The intent is to create a level playing field by comparing sustainability of the waste collections and transportation methods in optimal designs. The analysis includes a comparison of the three most common methods of WEEE collection including cost analysis and vehicle emission using case studies for urban and rural areas. The results show the importance of properly planned collection routes. Mobile collection is the most sustainable method of WEEE collection while drop off of waste by residents at municipal collection centers is the worst case due to high emissions and operation costs. The results and the proposed model give an opportunity to evaluate existing WEEE collection methods in urban and rural areas and propose some improvements for waste collecting companies.

Towards sustainable WEEE collection and transportation methods in circular economy - Comparative study for rural and urban settlements

Today, in advanced companies, the supply chain managers have attempted to use green logistics in order to improve the environmental performance in the whole supply chain. This could be taken as a strategic key to achieve the stable competitive advantage. Based on an environmental perspective, the Supply Chain Performance (SCP) can be enhanced through making utility and satisfaction for stakeholder. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the impacts of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices on economic, environmental, and operational performance in Iranian automobile industry by using a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). To do so, a model with four hypotheses has been proposed which illustrates the relationship between GSCM practices and SCP in terms of their indices. GSCM practices include four factors: the supplier management, the product recycling, the organizational involvement, and the product lifecycle management. In addition, SCP includes four aspects, namely the environmental performance, the positive economic performance, the negative economic performance, and the operational performance. To collect data in the practical area, questionnaires and field researches were used, then the proposed model has been analyzed and confirmed by applying Pearson Correlation Coefficient and SEM. The confirmation of the research hypotheses showed that the improvement of GSCM practices in Iranian automobile industry has positively promoted the SCP with the prediction rate of 70.56% and in the 95% confidence level. After implementing this model in Saipa automobile company as a case study cooperating with more than 1000 suppliers, the decision processes were enhanced so as to create sustainable value chain, develop opportunities for customers, produce sustainable benefits for both shareholders and employees regarding the organization involvement, the product lifecycle management, the product recycling and the suppliers management. Using this model, the Iranian automobile companies’ managers also manage effectively to create sustainable values for stakeholders through creating positive economical, operational and environmental impacts on its own value chain performance.

Regarding development of Information Technology, the world of industry has inordinately benefited, albeit that has some losses. Unless the losses are considered, advanced losses will be seen after progress with which is more difficult to cope. Neglecting the future and the risk involved in the industry, not to mention the lack of knowledge in dealing with sudden alterations, compel irrecoverable loss. In this context, information technology services in organizations are aimed to be cost-effective and have minimum environmental impact, according to green information technology strategies. Concerning significance of the issue, purpose of this research is assessment of information technology services with respect to greenness level in a general contractor organization by combination of Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process and Fuzzy Screening Procedure to enhance the greenness level of IT services. The effectiveness of using this approach is including qualitative, quantitative, and uncertainty nature of the problem. In this paper, to consider the Green IT services criteria, literatures have been studied by meta-synthesis method, then the importance of the criteria has been determined by questionnaires so as to rank Green IT criteria. Eventually, the organization level has been concluded in terms of the greenness level of IT services. As a case study, IT experts and managers of KAYSON Inc. organization are considered as statistical population of this research. The reduction had the highest weight among other criteria- recycling and reusing - in KAYSON Inc. organization. Finally, the organization greenness level was determined moderate in terms of IT services.

Evaluation of Green IT services with Fuzzy Screening approach

Modern natural gas pipeline failures constitute devastating disasters, as they can result in cascading secondary crises. Therefore, reduction of buried gas pipeline's reliability, has become a major concern among stakeholders and researchers in recent years. This study employs a dynamic Bayesian network to investigate the consequences of natural gas pipeline failures. We consider seven parent nodes—age, diameter, length, depth, population, time of occurrence, and land use—and twelve consequence factors to analyze the overall losses stemming from pipeline failure. The proposed model can handle both static and dynamic systems using quantitative and/or qualitative data. To demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of our developed model, we analyze the gas pipeline network of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. The results show that age and diameter are the two most important and sensitive parameters. The developed Bayesian network model will aid decision-makers in effectively managing and improving the reliability of their assets. 

Dynamic Predictive Analysis of the Consequences of Gas Pipeline Failures Using a Bayesian Network

What human has been doing on earth natural system till now is competitively unfair consuming of limited resources, continuing this trend without thinking of sustainable development caused irreparable destruction. Sustainable leasing is an effective tool for fulfilling consumer's demands with attaining high level of resources productivity. Current researches are just focused on economical and environmental consideration. Hence in this study; a model is developed to help leasing companies to achieve sustainable development. The objective of this model is to design a sustainable leasing system, in which economical, environmental and social impacts are balanced during leasing and its EOL phase from customers and leasing company point of views. To solve the problem, Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) has been applied to find the Pareto-optimal solutions. These Pareto-optimal solutions will give some trade off information about the three mentioned objectives. So decision makers can analysis the variability of economical impact in compare to environmental and social improvements. Finally, a company of electronic leasing has been considered for a case study to validate the method and potential applications of the developed model.
