The purpose of this study is to investigate the metacognitive strategies that middle school students used in the process of solving problems individually. The study group consisted of 37 middle school students in the eighth grade. The students were asked one non-routine word problem, and their written answers were collected. After solving the problem, the students filled out a self-monitoring questionnaire that requested them to reflect retrospectively on the metacognitive strategies they employed for the problem. In order to obtain detailed data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six students, three of whom gave correct responses and the other three gave wrong answers to the problem. The data was analyzed through the model of metacognitive activity during problem-solving. The results showed that metacognitive skills have a significant effect on students’ problem-solving success. The study found that students with high metacognitive skills tend to solve the problem correctly by using appropriate strategies, mathematical notations and logical reasons. The results also revealed that students with poor metacognitive skills have difficulties in understanding the problem, selecting appropriate strategies, and finding correct answer. Although the students thought the opposite, it was concluded that their habits of checking, detecting, and correcting mistakes in their solutions were poor.

Metacognitive Skills and Problem-Solving

The aim of the genre-based pedagogy is to focus on students’ academic needs and enable them to read and write successfully (Martin, 1993, 2009). Therefore, it is imperative for teachers to understand the range of written genres and other writing skills that students need to use in their academic studies. This study has aimed to design an alternative and effective way of teaching writing to English Language and Literature students within the genre-based pedagogy considering their academic needs. The present study attempts to investigate the process of building metacognitive genre-awareness and show how it influences English Language and Literature students’ ability to interpret and compose academic texts. The present study is designed as a case study, and mixed methods of data collection and analysis have been adopted. Several sources of data coming from both the teacher herself and the students such as classroom observation and teacher’s journal, students’ written texts (portfolios), students’ diaries and interview with students have been used to have a deeper understanding of the process of genre-based writing instruction. The results of the study indicate that most of the students acquired, at least, metacognitive awareness of the declarative type, they seem to move their writing ability up and there is a general improvement in their writing performance.

Mathematical Instructional: A Conceptual of Redesign of Active Learning with Metacognitive Regulation Strategy.

21st-century learning is integral to the transformation of the curriculum in Malaysia with the transition from School Integrated Curriculum (SIC) to School Standard Curriculum (SSC) introduced around 2014. During this time, the implementation of 21st-century learning was acceptable and very rewarding. However, the impact of implementation on students' skills, abilities, potentials and achievements should be looked at to ensure that the new curriculum is stable and practical to continue. There is a need to discuss the level of metacognitive regulation skills and students’ achievement in line with the introduction and implementation of 21st-century learning in the context of the Malaysian curriculum. Therefore, this research was conducted to examine whether the implementation of 21st-century learning has an impact on metacognitive regulation skills and student achievement. This quantitative survey was conducted by 201 Form 2 students from four secondary schools in Pasir Gudang District, Johor, Malaysia. The results show that the level of students' metacognitive regulation skills and the level of achievement in mathematics is moderate. Correlation analysis also showed there was a significant correlation between metacognitive regulation skills and student achievement. The implications from this research suggest that stakeholders including ministries, curriculum developers, education departments and teachers need to take initiatives to strengthen and improve the reputation of curriculum transformation in line with the 21st-century learning era in producing quality education. Written Feedback: Exploring the Reflections of Upper Primary Music Students at Two Western Australian Schools

This paper describes a study investigating students’ metacognitive behavior and abilities in the mathematic class using the open approach. Four 1st grade students, ages six to seven years, served as a target group from the primary school having participated since 2006 in the Teacher Professional Development Project with innovation of lesson study and open approach. The research was based on Begle’s conceptual framework (1969), focusing on observing the nature of occurrences in order to describe emerging facts in the class. In addition, the data were examined by triangulation among three sources: video recording, field notes, and students’ written works. Data analysis rested upon 4 open approach-based teaching steps (Inprasitha, 2010). The study results showed that the open approach-based mathematic class helped students exhibit metacognitive behavior and abilities relevant to the four teaching steps: 1) posing open-ended problem, 2) students’ self learning, 3) whole class discussion and comparison, and 4) summarization through connecting students’ mathematical ideas emerging in the classroom.

Students’ Metacognitive Strategies in the Mathematics Classroom Using Open Approach

The objective of this research was to study the effect that contextual factors have on the development of students’ metacognitive strategies in the open approach-based mathematics classroom: the framework for learning and teaching activities in the class, the teacher’s role, and students’ role. The methodology was based on ethnographic research and Begle’s conceptual framework (1969), which focused on observation and study on the nature of occurrences. In the context, the researcher conducted participatory classroom observation. The target groups were a mathematics teacher, who is a student as a math teaching practitioner, and four elementary school students at Grade 1 ranging from 6 to 7 years of age from Koo Kham Pittayasan School. Data were collected from 3 learning units totaling 6 study periods. Qualitative data analysis procedures were based on analyzing videos, protocols, students’ written work, and time units for dealing with activities and narrative description. The concept of 4 open approach-based teaching steps (Inprasitha, 2010) was considered for the analysis of the teacher’s teaching behavior and students’ problem solving behavior. The study findings suggest that contextual factors in the open approach-based mathematics classroom affect the development of students’ metacognitive strategies in which the teacher has planned learning management related to learning unit structures and focused on instructional activities allowing students “to create knowledge from learning how to solve problems by themselves”. In addition, the study demonstrates that the teacher and students have different roles in each teaching step.
