Conductor of public feelings: An affective-emotional rhetorical analysis of Obama’s national eulogy in Tucson

This project explores the revived interest in American soul music and the ways that contemporary soul musicians negotiate the concept of “authenticity.” Two contemporary record labels, Daptone Records and Numero Group, have spearheaded this revival. As I argue, their ascendance is symptomatic of larger, more sweeping concerns; a response to something lost that needs to be reclaimed, or something underrepresented that needs to be represented. For these reasons, I view Daptone and Numero Group as instructive case studies in the analysis of authenticity as a term of separation, distinction, acclaim, and prestige. Further, articulations of authenticity define the terms under which these disputations are fought. They illuminate soul music’s contentious relationship with its past and explain its enduring relevance in the present— a relevance necessarily wrought with assumptions about what types of ethical commitments from the past are worth reclaiming and preserving. This dissertation aims to reveal Daptone’s and Numero Group’s ethical commitments, showing them to be disciplined by the selective uptake of certain sonic qualities, attitudinal dispositions, and aspirational goals that critique popular music aesthetics. Contestations of authenticity appear both in the ways that these two record labels perceive and interpret the legacy of soul music in the 1960s and 1970s and in the affective and sonic qualities that they champion in doing so. I argue that the term “authenticity” be foregrounded in rhetorical scholarship as a primary object of concern. More importantly, however, I also argue that the story of American soul music is a particularly fertile site from which scholars in communication can reassess their understandings of how aesthetic values become authenticated through time.

BOARD OF EDUCATION Jaclyn Leigh Bruner, Doctor of Philosophy, 2019 Dissertation directed by: Associate Professor, Damien S. Pfister, Communication Brown v. Board of Education (1954) was the landmark Supreme Court decision that outlawed legal segregation in the United States. This project engages with three commemorative events that mark the anniversary of the decision--the 25, 50, and 64 anniversaries--to investigate how public memory of Brown v. Board of Education is constructed and how the legacy of the decision is remembered. Anniversaries, as moments where kairotic and chronotic conceptions of time come together, offer an opportunity to (re)define the past through the work of public memory. Although Brown’s memory at the “monumental” 25 anniversary featured coordinated regional commemorations, Brown’s legacy of race and memory is nationalized and largely sanitized by the 50 anniversary. In contrast to these momentous anniversaries, the non-monumental 64 anniversary articulated a counter-regional identity for Topeka, Kansas. By tracing the public memory of Brown across a 60-year period, this dissertation extends James Boyd White’s theory of justice-as-translation, asserting that the critical, rhetorical attention to the public memory of the Brown decision enacts a form of narrative justice and, consequently, advances a new way of conceptualizing persistent, de facto segregation and racial injustice in our contemporary world. to Boromisza-Habashi, engage in passionate impartiality, which requires “calming the desire to act, to take a stance, to contest, to judge” (99). Readers that maintain critical commitments may struggle with Boromisza-Habashi’s call here, especially given the types of discourse under investigation. His aim, however, is for practitioners to consider the many sides to any issue, a worthy goal for any who engage in public deliberation. As counsel, cultural knowledge can “chart novel, perhaps culturally unfamiliar courses of political action” (99). Boromisza-Habashi offers a number of generic ideas, including contestation, the recasting of cultural meanings under dispute, and specific ideas that he offers to particular groups. In contrast to his discussion of cultural knowledge as information, Boromisza-Habashi plainly states his political belief about the “destructive power” (102) of hate speech and explains how he counseled groups on the topic. Finally, understanding cultural knowledge as a symbolic template for creative action outlines the various symbolic resources available to political actors. BoromiszaHabashi maintains that cultural analysis cannot tell practitioners what to do, but it can offer “the ingredients of a symbolic template for creative communicative action” (112). Speaking Hatefully leaves readers with a thorough unpacking of the debate and terminology surrounding hate speech in Hungary. The appendix, which includes an outline of BoromiszaHabashi’s ethnographic approach, is not to be missed. Interestingly, to learn of these themes, Boromisza-Habashi attended meetings of far right and pro-Nazi groups in Hungary, even though he personally disbelieves in their message. If one criticism may be offered of his overall project and text, it is that he leaves discussion of his personal beliefs on the matter of hate speech until the final chapter. This reflexive moment provides connection and clarity for readers, who may have been questioning his stance throughout the project. Given the nature of the topic, readers may find his seemingly neutral stance, up to this point at least, difficult to maintain from an ethnographic perspective, especially when faced with pro-Nazi groups. Also curiously absent from the text is any discussion of the recent methodological developments in rhetoric that connect qualitative approaches and rhetorical theory, or a more thorough accounting of the vernacular turn in rhetoric from scholars such as Hauser, Ono and Sloop, and Howard. Boromisza-Habashi’s training as an ethnographer first and a scholar of public discourse second may explain those omissions. However, these methodological and theoretical issues are minor, given the strong and welldocumented arguments that Boromisza-Habashi offers throughout the text. For those who are interested in public deliberation and discourse, the text is a useful companion, especially given its strong commitment to understanding cultural thinking. Boromisza-Habashi thoroughly displays the connection between public discourse and cultural knowledge in an accessible fashion, and examines key terms of the debate, such as content and tone, in depth. For practitioners, the text uncovers the nuances of culture as they inform political arguments. The author’s mapping of cultural knowledge would be especially useful to those who desire to influence public debates over highly contested terms. In sum, Boromisza-Habashi offers a thorough accounting of the cultural discourses that compose a passionate public debate regarding hate speech in free societies.
