The effect of feeding mycotoxins, i.e. aflatoxin B1 (1.25 ppm from 3 to 38 days of age) and ochratoxin A (0.5 ppm from 3 to 38 days of age) along with inclusion body hepatitis virus (IBHV) inoculation (at 10 days of age) singly and in combination was studied in broiler chicks. Birds in combined treatment groups, i.e. aflatoxin fed and virus inoculated and ochratoxin fed and virus inoculated, showed more changes in activities of phosphatases (AKPase, ATPase, G-6-Pase and ACPase) in liver and kidney tissues than their respective individual treatment groups with a few exceptions. Reduction in the activities of oxido-reductases in liver and kidney tissues were almost comparable in different treatment groups. The increase in muco-polysaccharides reaction was more marked in both the combined treatment groups than the single treatment groups. Intensity of lipid reaction was more in ochratoxin virus combination group than either alone.

However, the practice of professional blood donation, where individuals are compensated for their blood, raises a number of ethical concerns. This paper explores the complexities surrounding professional blood donation. One central debate centres on the concept of altruism versus compensation. Voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation is often lauded for its selfless nature. Conversely, paying donors raises concerns about exploitation, particularly of vulnerable populations who may be motivated by financial hardship rather than pure altruism. This can lead to questions about informed consent and potential pressure to donate despite health risks. The safety of the blood supply is paramount. Professional donors, by virtue of their frequent donations, may be more likely to engage in risky behaviours to be eligible, potentially increasing the risk of blood borne diseases entering the supply. Additionally, the long-term health effects of frequent blood donation require further investigation. The issue of fairness also arises. Certain blood types are more in demand, potentially creating a situation where some donors are financially rewarded more than others. This could exacerbate existing social inequalities and raise concerns about equity in access to compensation. This paper argues for a nuanced discussion on professional blood donation. While the altruistic model has limitations, the potential exploitation and safety risks associated with compensation require careful consideration. The paper concludes by calling for further research on the long-term health impacts of frequent donation and the development of ethical frameworks that balance safety, equity, and the need for a sufficient blood supply.

Professional Blood Donors: Ethical Concerns and Complexities

A multiplex reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) assay that detects Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus, Bovine Coronavirus, and Group A Rotaviruses in infected cell-culture fluids and clinical faecal samples is described. One hundred twenty faecal samples from buffalo calves with acute gastroenteritis were tested. The mRT-PCR was validated against simplex RT-PCR with published primers for Pestivirus, Coronavirus and Rotavirus. The multiplex RT-PCR was equally sensitive and specific in detecting viral infections compared with simplex RT-PCR. The mRT-PCR readily identified viruses by discriminating the size of their amplified gene products. This mRT-PCR may be a sensitive and rapid assay for surveillance of buffalo enteric viruses in field specimens. This novel multiplex RT-PCR is an attractive technique for the rapid, specific, and cost-effective laboratory diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis.

Wilson’s illness is an autosomal dominant impairment of copper metabolism that results from the lack of or dysfunction of a copper-transporting P-type ATPase, which is expressed on chromosome 13. This ATPase is a component of the trans-Golgi network and is carried by hepatocytes. It transports copper into the secretory route where it is combined with ceruloplasmin and excreted as bile. Affected people gradually develop copper accumulation in the liver since the only pathway for copper excretion in physiological settings is through biliary clearance. Hepatocytes experience cell death when their storage capacity is exceeded, which causes hemolysis, copper leakage into the plasma, and tissue deposition. Children might experience rapid liver failure, silent cirrhosis, or chronic hepatitis. Among the neuropsychiatric symptoms induced by copper overload in the central nervous system that are frequently seen in young people are dystonia, tremors, temperamental disorders, and cognitive deficiencies. Test results showing lower ceruloplasmin levels in serum, elevated urine copper concentration, and elevated intrahepatic copper percentage indicate Wilson’s illness. Because there are more than 100 distinct mutations and most people are compound heterozygotes, molecular genetic analysis is difficult. Copper treatment with penicillamine is a successful therapy for the vast number of patients, and liver transplantation is beneficial in situations of chronic liver failure. The molecular genetic causes of Wilson’s disease have shed new light on the mechanisms governing cellular copper homeostasis.

Diagnosis and treatment of Wilson disease: An update

The department of transfusion medicine, also known as blood bank, is one of the most important parts of a healthcare facility. It provides whole blood as well as different blood components like packed red blood cells (RBCs), thrombocytes, plasma, and coagulation factors to all necessary patient populations. Almost all major surgeries require it and only 2.5 billion of the 5 billion blood units required by our country each year are available. Because human blood cannot be replaced; the gift of life is given through the optimum use of blood and its components. According to the study, the demand for screened blood is very high, and the world requires blood every two seconds. When a patient is admitted to a hospital’s emergency ward, a blood test is almost always performed first and is usually followed by a blood request. Gunshot wounds and unintentional injuries necessitate immediate medical attention, including blood transfusions to compensate for low blood pressure and significant blood loss. A hospital would be considered incomplete without a state-of-the-art blood bank, which significantly facilitates cardiac procedures. Cross-matching and organizing at least five units of packed RBCs is a scheduled step in cardiac surgery. Simultaneously, one donor is cross-matched and tested for all parameters, including infectious markers, and its blood is drawn first when needed during cardiac surgery. After that, the arranged blood units are supplied for transfusion. This happens because freshly drawn blood contains all of the essential components for coagulation. Burns, hemorrhagic disorders, anemia, leukemia, thalassemia, and hemolytic disorders, as well as accidents, all necessitate the use of blood. Patients are transfused with blood on an exchange basis. During an emergency, blood units are released from the blood bank, and replacement blood is drawn from the patient’s relatives. Because of this system of blood unit replacement, many patients’ relatives are hesitant to donate blood or do not have donors for replacement. This gave rise to one of blood banks’ most unethical practices: bringing in paid donors or professional donors to donate blood for patients in exchange for money. This became a major issue for the entire medical community, resulting in the spreading of diseases such as HIV, HBsAg, HCV, SYPHILIS, and blood with low hemoglobin levels being transfused to patients with no clinical benefits.
