A Systematic Review of the Impact of Derived Relational Responding Technology in Raising Intelligence Scores

Psychologists increasingly recognize the importance of relational responding in understanding human behavior. As a result, there is a growing need for valid, reliable, and precise measures of relational responding. One promising measure is the Relational Abilities Index (RAI). However, its measurement properties have not been explored in-depth. There is little understanding, for example, of how precise the RAI is as a measure of individual-level abilities. In this paper I examine the precision of the RAI at the individual-level, quantify the item characteristics of the task using Item Response Theory, and more generally assess its quality as a measure of relational responding. Although broadly promising, the measure exhibits several substantial shortcomings which limit its utility and interpretability. I make recommendations for how to improve the task and highlight the importance of in-depth examinations of measurement for future research. 

On the measurement of relational responding

It is important that scientists reflect on their scientific aims and on how to achieve those aims. The report of the ACBS Task Force on the strategies and tactics of CBS research is an important document in that it provides explicit recommendations on what is needed to realize the aims of CBS. In this invited commentary on the report, we reflect on two ways in which several of the recommendations in the report can be fulfilled. More specifically, we specify the ways that the Functional-Cognitive framework can be used to foster communication and collaboration at different levels of analysis, and the ways in which modern data scientific approaches (specifically out-of-sample prediction) can be used in the context of existing statistical methods to provide ideographic prediction.

There is little understanding, for example, of how precise the RAI is as a measure of individual-level abilities. In this paper I examine this and other measurement properties of the RAI and assess its suitability as a measure of relational responding at both the individual- and group-level. Although broadly promising, the measure exhibits several substantial shortcomings which limit its utility and interpretability. I make recommendations for how to improve the measure and highlight the importance of in-depth examinations of measurement for future research. 

The Relational Abilities Index (RAI) has shown considerable utility as a functional proxy measurement of intellectual performance by providing a metric of an important skill set known as relational skills, which are proposed to underlie much of what we conceive of as intellectual behavior. The Relational Abilities Index+ (RAI+) assesses performance across an extended range of relational skills (Same/Opposite, More/Less, Same/Different, Before/After, and Analogy), and has been designed to provide a more comprehensive and nuanced assessment of relational skills. The current study aims to investigate the validity and utility of the RAI+ by assessing its degree of correlation with well-established assessments of intelligence (WASI), numeracy (WAIS: Arithmetic), and educational attainment (WIAT-T-II). Results indicate that the RAI+ displays considerable efficacy in predicting intellectual performance and numeracy, but not educational attainment.
