Abstract The increase in the global population has led to a substantial increase in the demand for food supply as well as food manufacturing industries that regularly produce large amounts of food waste. Agro-industrial waste has attracted tremendous attention all over the world since ancient times, such waste is usually dumped or burned and poses a threat to human health and the environment, which has always been a matter of serious concern. However, food waste is a major source of complex carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, fibers, and helps in the manufacture of raw materials for a variety of industrial purposes such as the production of biofuels, enzymes, bioactive compounds, biodegradable plastics, surfactants. Hence it is necessary to convert food waste into value-added products that reduce environmental problems. The present review paper attempts to outline and analyze the potential of agro-industrial residues as cost-effective substrates to produce the enzyme amylase using a wide range of microbial strains. Agro-industrial waste: a cost-effective and eco-friendly substrate to produce amylase

Biomass waste must be treated and disposed off properly, as it concerns the possibility of deposition in the environment. This could worsen the ecosystem by promoting the growth of pathogens, producing poisonous fumes, releasing ammonia and other dangerous gases into the atmosphere. Therefore, researchers are exploring different direct biomass waste applications. One such application is biotechnological options with financial and environmental benefits like lowering the consumption of fossil fuels, reducing harmful emissions, accelerating the synthesis of low-cost raw materials, and fostering an environment that is favourable for a broad range of microorganisms. In recent years, biofuel has emerged as the primary source of bio-energy by replacing fossil fuels that can meet the global energy demands and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This review explores the potential of biomass waste conversion techniques and examines the production of biofuels to achieve zero carbon emissions. Critical research has also been done to improve the anaerobic treatment method of the biochemical conversion method. Apart from these, the advancements in the study of metabolic engineering techniques and artificial intelligence in the production of biofuel and strategies along with microbial chassis to enhance production of biofuel in an efficient manner were also studied. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of biofuels were delineated.

Structural and photoluminescence properties of Sm3+ ions doped strontium yttrium tungstate phosphors for reddish-orange photonic device applications

Multicomponent systems based on liquid crystals are of great interest both in the field of scientific research and in the field of practical application. To date, one of the most studied systems are liquid crystal/nanoparticles and liquid crystal/polymer systems. Each system individually has its own advantages and disadvantages which limit their field of application. The way to circumvent the drawbacks and increase the advantages of both systems is to combine them into a three-component liquid crystal/polymer/nanoparticles system. This combination allows to fine tune and improve the most commonly exploited system parameters in display applications, such as electro-optics properties, and other such as structural, spectroscopic, luminescent, etc., which can significantly expand the applications of multicomponent systems. Therefore, this review is devoted to creating a holistic picture that includes all possible effects resulting from the combination of the properties of liquid crystals, polymers, and various nanomaterials. Also, as a result of the following analysis, possible prospects of multicomponent systems application are reviewed. 

Advances in multicomponent systems: Liquid crystal/nanoparticles/polymer

The objective of this work is to offer a better understanding of the unique structural, mechanical, optical and nuclear radiation attenuation properties exhibited by newly produced (B2O3)(70-x)(SrO)x(Na2O)10)(BaO)10(CaO)10 glasses, where x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 %. For this purpose, after The XRD measurements confirmed the non-crystalline nature of the glass structures, it was noted that the substitution of B2O3 with SrO increased the density of SrO glasses in the range of 2.915 g/cm3- 3.304 g/cm3. It was also found that the addition of SrO to barium borate glasses improved their mechanical properties such as Vickers microhardness and yield stress, and the elastic modulus of the glasses decreased. The DSC curves obtained showed that the glass transition temperature increased with the addition of SrO. The direct and indirect band energies of SrO glasses, whose bond structures were evaluated by FTIR and optical properties by UV measurements, were found to decrease in the range of 3.42 eV–3.02 eV and 3.32eV–2.62eV. The nuclear radiation shielding capacities of Sr glasses were then investigated by gamma ray and fast neutron transmission experiments. For gamma-ray transmission experiments, a 133Ba radioisotope was used in combination with an HPGe detector, while a 241Am/Be source and a gas proportional detector were used for neutron absorption experiments. With the addition of SrO, the MAC values of Sr0–Sr4 glasses have shown an increase in the range 0.5116–0.0999 cm2/g and 0.7386–0.1008 cm2/g. Sr glasses has been found to be effective in the attenuation of fast neutrons, and it is even superior to conventional neutron absorbers.

A series of oxyfluoride strontium zinc borosilicate (OFSZBS) glasses co-doped with Dy3+/Eu3+ ions was prepared via melt quench method. The structural properties were examined using XRD and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) on DE2.0 and undoped OFSZBS glasses, respectively. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy was used to evaluate the direct & indirect energy band gaps. At different excitations (348, 362, 385 and 393 nm), the photoluminescence (PL) spectra were observed with tuned light. Warm white light was generated through the Dy3+ (4F9/2→6H15/2, 6H13/2) and Eu3+ (5D0→7F2) transitions. Dexter Reisfield approximation applied to PL data revealed a dipole-dipole (d-d) mechanism accountable for the energy transfer (non-radiative) between sensitizer (Dy3+) and activator (Eu3+) ions. The energy transfer efficiency in the co-doped glass samples was found between 8% to 50%, depending on the doping. The Inokuti-Hirayama (I-H) fitting of PL decay profiles also confirm the energy transfer mechanism. The CIE chromaticity color coordinates observed for OFSZBSDE2.0 glass also confirm the color tunability. The above findings reveal the applications of as-prepared Dy3+/Eu3+ co-doped OFSZBS glasses excited using n-UV light for warm white LEDs and tuned devices. 

Efficient tunable photoluminescence of Dy3+/Eu3+ co-doped OFSZBS glasses for warm white LEDs

In this study, a series of Pr3+ ions doped Lithium Barium Tungstate (Li2Ba5W3O15) was synthesized using the conventional high-temperature solid state method. The structure and phase of the phosphors were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to examine the different vibrational bands present. The optical band gap values of the optimized LBW phosphor and the undoped LBW sample were measured using diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). Under 319 nm excitation, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the Pr3+-activated LBW phosphor exhibited strong visible blue and reddish emissions at 488 nm and 647 nm respectively corresponding to the 3P0 → 3H4 and 3F2 transitions of the Pr3+ ions. The evaluated CIE color chromaticity coordinates of the as-prepared LBW:Pr3+ phosphors lie within the white region. The temperature-dependent PL (TDPL) measurement demonstrated relatively good thermal stability for the synthesized phosphor. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) was used to analyze the optical sensing properties of the LBW:Pr1.0 phosphor. A maximum relative sensitivity (Sr) of 1.03 % K−1indicated the potential of these phosphors for optical thermometry applications. A double exponential trend with decreasing lifetime was observed in the PL decay data at 647 nm emission (λem) under 319 nm excitation (λex), with an increase in the Pr3+ ions concentration in the host matrix. In conclusion, the investigations conducted demonstrate that the Pr3+ ions doped LBW phosphors show great potential for applications in solid-state lighting and optical thermometry. Its emission characteristics, thermal stability, and optical sensing capabilities establish it as a suitable candidate for these applications.
