The magnocellular deficit hypothesis in dyslexia: a review of reported evidence

In the present study, the role of rapid visual and auditory temporal processing in reading irregular and nonsense words was investigated with a group of normal readers. One hundred and five undergraduates participated in various visual and auditory temporal-processing tasks. Readers who primarily adopted the phonological route in reading (nonsense-word readers) showed a trend for better auditory temporal resolution but readers who primarily adopted sight word skills (irregular-word readers) did not exhibit better visual temporal resolution. Both the correlation and stepwise multiple-regression analyses, however, revealed a relationship between visual temporal processing and irregular-word reading as well as a relationship between auditory temporal processing and nonsense-word reading. The results support the involvement of visual and auditory processing in reading irregular and nonsense words respectively, and were discussed with respect to recent findings that only dyslexics with phonological impairment will display temporal deficits. Further, the temporal measures were not effective discriminants for the reading groups, suggesting a lack of association between reading ability and the choice of reading strategy.

The role of visual and auditory temporal processing in reading irregular and nonsense words.

Developmental dyslexia (specific reading and specific spelling disorder) is thought to stem from specific features in cognitive processing strongly related to biological maturation of the central nervous system which interact with non-biological learning conditions. The specific learning disorder should not be accounted for by mental age, gross neurological deficits, emotional disturbances or inadequate schooling. As a clinical guideline, the child’s level in reading and spelling must be significantly below that expected for the population of children of the same mental age. The persistence rate is high and dyslexia is often associated with psychiatric problems. The etiology is not known. From the biological point of view, dyslexia is supposed to have a neurological basis. Neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and neuropsychological correlates have been studied by means of autopsy, brain imaging, neurophysiological and neuropsychological methods. There is good evidence that dyslexia is determined by heritable cognitive components of reading and spelling processing. Experimental research focuses on characteristics of brain structure and cognitive skills related to the central nervous systems of auditory-phonological and visual information processing.

Reading and spelling disorders: clinical features and causes.

Individuals with specific reading disability (SRD) may exhibit visual psychophysical abnormalities that include prolonged visual persistence, decreased luminance contrast sensitivity, lower flicker fusion thresholds, abnormal metacontrast masking, and lower motion detection sensitivity. These abnormalities could result from impairment of the magnocellular division of the visual afferent pathway to the cortex. The authors predicted that an impairment of this pathway would also cause abnormalities in ability to localize visual stimuli. This prediction was tested in 2 experiments. Results of both experiments showed that adults who reported a history of SRD and who currently had lower reading performance were less able than non-SRD participants to report the locations of small visual stimuli that were briefly flashed at positions similar to the ends of lines of text.

: Kidney transplant is considered the best therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease in renal replacement therapy or dialysis stage, which has better survival and quality of life with lower morbidity and lower long-term expenses, resulting in overall cost saving for the health care system compared to other therapies. In a living donor kidney transplant patient, the safety must remain as maximal priority because it is performed on a healthy patient who accepts the risks of major surgery for the benefit of the recipient. The process of donation should be as least traumatic, painful, and uncomfortable as possible to the potential donor. Over the years several approaches have been described, currently there is no gold standard to perform a nephrectomy on potential donors. Hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy encompasses the benefits of the minimally invasive approach reducing the operative time and learning curve in comparison with the totally laparoscopic procedure. This technique has shown excellent results, both for the donor and the recipient. This work presents the technical description of the hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy focused on the anatomical aspects, tips and tricks. Furthermore, the equipment preference card, patient’s workup, postoperative management, and narrated technique video are added so that the reader can follow them visually.
