Due to extreme variations in geocl i- matic patterns, the global arid biome consists of highly diversified and heterogeneous ecosystems. The dry climates of the continents occur in five great provinces separated from one another by oceans or by wet equatorial zones. Of these five provinces, North Afr i- can-Eurasia is larger than rest of the four combined. The world's largest desert Sahara and a series of other hot d e- serts and semi-arid areas continue eastward through the Arabian peninsula along the Persian Gulf of Pakistan, and India fall in this province 2 . It also includes cold deserts from states of the former Soviet Union through China to Iran. The tropical desert of Asia extends to India through Rajasthan and Gujarat where it is called the Thar. The Thar lies west of Aravalli Range in Rajasthan and covers an area of about 196,150 km 2 . It is subjected to intense winds and wide variations in temperature ranging from a minimum of 5°C to a maximum of 45°C. It is dotted with numerous water reservoirs including four major inland saline playas.

Microbial diversity in desert ecosystems

Plant growth promoting microbes (PGPMs) play major roles in diverse ecosystems, including atmospheric nitrogen fixation, water uptake, solubilization, and transport of minerals from the soil to the plant Different PGPMs are proposed as biofertilizers, biostimulants, and/or biocontrol agents to improve plant growth and productivity and thereby to contribute to agricultural sustainability and food security However, little information exists regarding the use of PGPMs in micropropagation such as the in vitro plant tissue culture This review presents an overview of the importance of PGPMs and their potential application in plant micropropagation Our analysis, based on published articles, reveals that the process of in vitro classical tissue culture techniques, under strictly aseptic conditions, deserves to be reviewed to allow vitroplants to benefit from the positive effect of PGPMs Furthermore, exploiting the potential benefits of PGPMs will lead to lessen the cost production of vitroplants during micropropagation process and will make the technique of plant tissue culture more efficient The last part of the review will indicate where research is needed in the future

Potential verification of a host plant for the desert truffle Terfezia pfeilii by molecular methods

The mycorrhizal synthesis of Terfezia claveryi with micropropagated plantlets of Helianthemum almeriense was carried out in vitro on modified Modified MelinNorkrans (MMN) agar medium with pH 8.0. The mycorrhization rate was about 80% after 12 weeks. T. claveryi formed ectendomycorrhizas without hyphal mantle. The effect of the fungus on in vitro rooting was also studied. T. claveryi did not enhance in vitro rooting of microcuttings of H. almeriense. In vitro survival of the plantlets was the limiting step and mycorrhizal inoculation appeared to improve the survival rate of rooted plantlets. The effect of the mineral composition and pH of the medium on survival are discussed.
