Structural optimization using sensitivity analysis and a level-set method

Topology optimization has undergone a tremendous development since its introduction in the seminal paper by Bendsoe and Kikuchi in 1988. By now, the concept is developing in many different directions, including “density”, “level set”, “topological derivative”, “phase field”, “evolutionary” and several others. The paper gives an overview, comparison and critical review of the different approaches, their strengths, weaknesses, similarities and dissimilarities and suggests guidelines for future research.

Topology optimization approaches: A comparative review

This review paper provides an overview of different level-set methods for structural topology optimization. Level-set methods can be categorized with respect to the level-set-function parameterization, the geometry mapping, the physical/mechanical model, the information and the procedure to update the design and the applied regularization. Different approaches for each of these interlinked components are outlined and compared. Based on this categorization, the convergence behavior of the optimization process is discussed, as well as control over the slope and smoothness of the level-set function, hole nucleation and the relation of level-set methods to other topology optimization methods. The importance of numerical consistency for understanding and studying the behavior of proposed methods is highlighted. This review concludes with recommendations for future research.

Level-set methods for structural topology optimization: a review

Topology optimization has become an effective tool for least-weight and performance design, especially in aeronautics and aerospace engineering. The purpose of this paper is to survey recent advances of topology optimization techniques applied in aircraft and aerospace structures design. This paper firstly reviews several existing applications: (1) standard material layout design for airframe structures, (2) layout design of stiffener ribs for aircraft panels, (3) multi-component layout design for aerospace structural systems, (4) multi-fasteners design for assembled aircraft structures. Secondly, potential applications of topology optimization in dynamic responses design, shape preserving design, smart structures design, structural features design and additive manufacturing are introduced to provide a forward-looking perspective.

Level-Set method and stability condition for curvature-driven flows

In this paper the topological derivative for an arbitrary shape functional is defined. Examples are provided for elliptic equations and the elasticity system in the plane. The topological derivative can be used for solving shape optimization problems in structural mechanics.

On the topological derivative in shape optimization

The problem of topology optimization is considered for free boundary problems of thin obstacle types. The formulae for the first term of asymptotics for energy functionals are derived. The precision of obtained terms is verified numerically. The topological differentiability of solutions to variational inequalities is established. In particular, the so-called outer asymptotic expansion for solutions of contact problems in elasticity with respect to singular perturbation of geometrical domain depending on small parameter are derived by an application of nonsmooth analysis. Such results lead to the topological derivatives of shape functionals for contact problems. The topological derivatives are used in numerical methods of simultaneous shape and topology optimization.

Applications of the Topological Derivative Method

We consider an elastic body with a rigid inclusion and a crack located at the boundary of the inclusion. It is assumed that nonpenetration conditions are imposed at the crack faces which do not allow the opposite crack faces to penetrate each other. We analyze the variational formulation of the problem and provide shape and topology sensitivity analysis of the solution in two and three spatial dimensions. The differentiability of the energy with respect to the crack length, for the crack located at the boundary of rigid inclusion, is established.

The topological derivative is introduced for the extremal values of cost functionals for control problems. The optimal control problem considered in the paper is defined for the elliptic equation which models the deflection of an elastic membrane. The derivative measures the sensitivity of the optimal value of the cost with respect to changes in topology. A change in topology means removing a small ball from the interior of the domain of integration. The topological derivative can be used for obtaining the numerical solutions of the shape optimization problems.
