Metabolic Stress Drives Keratinocyte Defenses against Staphylococcus aureus Infection
Matthew Wickersham,Sarah Wachtel,Tania Wong Fok Lung,Grace Soong,Rudy Jacquet,Anthony R. Richardson,Dane Parker,Alice Prince +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that S. aureus infection is sensed as a metabolic stress by the hypoxic keratinocytes, which induces HIF1α signaling, which promotes IL-1β production and stimulates aerobic glycolysis to meet the metabolic requirements of infection.

Genetic requirements for Staphylococcus aureus nitric oxide resistance and virulence.
Melinda R. Grosser,Elyse Paluscio,Lance R. Thurlow,Marcus M. Dillon,Vaughn S. Cooper,Thomas H. Kawula,Anthony R. Richardson +6 more
TL;DR: The most striking finding was that loss of any genes encoding components of the F1F0 ATPase resulted in mutants unable to grow in the presence of NO· or any other condition that inhibits cellular respiration, and these mutants were highly attenuated in murine SSTIs.
Lack of nutritional immunity in diabetic skin infections promotes Staphylococcus aureus virulence.
TL;DR: It is shown that infiltrating phagocytes do not express their high-efficiency glucose transporters in modeled diabetic infections, resulting in a diminished respiratory burst and increased glucose availability for S. aureus, and that excess glucose in these hyperglycemic abscesses significantly enhances S.aureus virulence potential, causing worse infection outcomes.

Genome Plasticity of agr-Defective Staphylococcus aureus during Clinical Infection.
Deena R. Altman,Mitchell J. Sullivan,Kieran I. Chacko,Divya Balasubramanian,Theodore R. Pak,William E. Sause,Krishan Kumar,Robert Sebra,Gintaras Deikus,Oliver Attie,Hannah R. Rose,Martha J. Lewis,Yi Fulmer,Ali Bashir,Andrew Kasarskis,Eric E. Schadt,Anthony R. Richardson,Victor J. Torres,Bo Shopsin,Harm van Bakel +19 more
TL;DR: It is reported that events associated with agr inactivation result in agr-defective blood and nares strain pairs that are enriched in mutations compared to pairs from wild-type controls, and additional mutations outside the agr locus can contribute to diversification and adaptation during infection by S. aureus agr mutants associated with poor patient outcomes.

Staphylococcus aureus Protein A Disrupts Immunity Mediated by Long-Lived Plasma Cells.
Amanda B. Keener,Lance T. Thurlow,Sun Ah Kang,Nicholas A. Spidale,Stephen H. Clarke,Kenji M. Cunnion,Roland Tisch,Anthony R. Richardson,Barbara J. Vilen +8 more
TL;DR: Failure to establish long-term protective Ab titers against S. aureus was not a consequence of diminished formation of B cell memory; instead, SpA reduced the proliferative capacity of PCs that entered the BM, diminishing the number of cells in the long-lived pool.
