Method and apparatus for detection and selection of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service. A cellular network may provide an advertisement for a WLAN, such as in an overhead signaling message. The advertisement may identify the Access Point(s) by an Extended Service Set Identifier (ESSID). The remote station may then scan for the WLAN service automatically or manually.

When an ad hoc network is formed between short range wireless devices, at least one device assumes the role of an ad hoc network information provider for the new piconet. In this role, the device allocates a browsing hierarchy of service classes in its service registry. The service classes will provide a record to characterize the ad hoc network. When a new wireless device arrives within the communication range of any member of the ad hoc network, its inquiry signals are answered by the first member detecting the inquiry. If that first member is an ad hoc network information provider, it responds with information accessed from its service registry characterizing the ad hoc network. If, instead, an ordinary device in the ad hoc network is the first to respond to the inquiry signals of the arriving device, the device responds with the address of the ad hoc network information provider. The arriving device then pages the ad hoc network information provider to obtain information characterizing the ad hoc network.

The user's wireless device (100) sends (326) a current context-activity pair (515) to a network server (140) in response to either the user's selection (324) of an activity or automatically (322). The user's wireless device (100) includes a service history log (110). The activities stored in the service history log (110) include past recommendations (1) made by the network server (140), past services used (2), prestored service preferences (3), and special requested service requirements (4). Context-activity pair information (515) sent to the server (140) can include any combination of these activities. The server (140) then responds with an appropriate recommendation (515').

The wireless device may, for example, be a notebook or laptop computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a mobile data terminal, wireless telephone, video camera or another multimedia device. A multi-channel radio controller (110) within the wireless device characterizes available communication networks to determine network characteristics including current network information. Available communication networks and services may be characterized by monitoring traffic, using location information, interrogating or from current connectivity. A wireless connectivity assistant (112) may select a communication network and service based on the network characteristics and at least one of user preferences, application requirements and system information.

The EIR terminal can provide IEEE 802.11-conformant wireless distribution system services, including association, disassociation, distribution, integration, and re-association, to the peer EIR terminals. The EIR terminal can be associated with a home network and have a home address belonging to the address range associated with the home network.

Once a match is found, one of the access network terminating devices is selected based on the comparison and the end device is configured according to the access capability of the selected one of the access network terminating devices. Access capabilities include, for example, cost of access, coverage area, and QoS. While communicating with the network the end device continues to detect if new access network terminating devices are available. The access capability for each of the new access network terminating devices is determined and compared with the preferred access capability and/or the current access capabilities being provided to the end device. One of the new access network terminating devices can be selected based on the comparison and the end device configured according to the access capability of the new access network terminating device.

Network-centric context information is used to make networks more receptive to the users’ needs by personalizing the communication process and making it more sensitive to changes that may occur in the surroundings. As such, it is a natural step that context awareness should be suitably incorporated within traditional networks in order to create an ‘ambient network’. This approach is aimed at enabling the co-operation of heterogeneous networks on demand, transparently to the potential users, and without the need for preconfiguration or offline negotiation between network operators. This paper discusses the approach taken by authors to incorporate context-awareness into ambient networking concepts. It discusses how network-related context information should be utilized in ambient networks for the end user to fully experience the pervasiveness of a network and the research challenges arising from this utilization. The paper also evaluates the benefits of employing context information and contextware concepts in ambient networks.

Contextware Research Challenges in Ambient Networks

The present invention relates to a method, a protocol and a control unit for managing devices in a Personal Area Network (PAN) (100) such that a user of the PAN can use one of his devices and take advantage of services residing in any of the other devices in the PAN (100). The devices in the PAN are defined as either PAN controller devices (200, 210) or PAN auxiliary devices (250) depending on if the devices have user interfaces suitable for controlling a PAN. When the PAN is managed according to the invention, the PAN controller devices (200, 210) and the PAN auxiliary devices (250) communicate with each other via short-range communication means (201, 211, 251) to exchange each other's PAN related information such that PAN related information is synchronized in the network. At least the PAN controller devices (200, 210) store received updated PAN related information from the other PAN participants such that the user can see an updated picture of the PAN on the PAN user interfaces (202, 212). Any of the PAN controller devices (200, 210) can then be used to control the other PAN participants via commands and messages of the invention. Figure for publication.
