Efficacy of low-dose interferon {alpha}2a 18 versus 60 months of treatment in patients with primary melanoma of >= 1.5 mm tumor thickness: results of a randomized phase III DeCOG trial.
Axel Hauschild,Michael Weichenthal,Knuth Rass,Ruthild Linse,Carola Berking,Jörg Böttjer,Thomas Vogt,Konstanze Spieth,Thomas Eigentler,Norbert H. Brockmeyer,Annette Stein,Helmut Näher,Dirk Schadendorf,Peter Mohr,Martin Kaatz,Michael Tronnier,Rüdiger Hein,Gerold Schuler,Friederike Egberts,Claus Garbe +19 more
TL;DR: A prolongation of conventional LDI therapy from 18 to 60 months showed no clinical benefit in patients with intermediate and high-risk primary melanoma.

Use of complementary and alternative medicine: A multicenter cross-sectional study in 1089 melanoma patients.
Carmen Loquai,Dagmar Dechent,Marlene Garzarolli,Martin Kaatz,Katharina C. Kaehler,Peter Kurschat,Frank Meiss,Oliver Micke,Ralph Muecke,Karsten Muenstedt,Annette Stein,Dorothee Nashan,Christoph Stoll,Irene Schmidtmann,Jutta Huebner +14 more
TL;DR: Communication on CAM should become a regular topic in counselling melanoma patients to increase safety, patients and physicians must have access to evidence-based information on these methods and their interactions with modern cancer treatments.

Risk of interactions between complementary and alternative medicine and medication for comorbidities in patients with melanoma
Carmen Loquai,Dagmar Dechent,Marlene Garzarolli,Martin Kaatz,Katharina C. Kaehler,Peter Kurschat,Frank Meiss,Annette Stein,Dorothee Nashan,Oliver Micke,Ralph Muecke,Karsten Muenstedt,Christoph Stoll,Irene Schmidtmann,Jutta Huebner +14 more
TL;DR: Assessment of prevalence of interactions between CAM and drugs for comorbidities from a large CAM usage survey on melanoma patients and to classify herb–drug interactions with regard to their potential to harm found almost all patients using Chinese herbs were at risk.

Intermittent High-Dose Intravenous Interferon Alfa-2b for Adjuvant Treatment of Stage III Melanoma: Final Analysis of a Randomized Phase III Dermatologic Cooperative Oncology Group Trial
Peter Mohr,Axel Hauschild,Uwe Trefzer,Alexander Enk,Wolfgang Tilgen,Carmen Loquai,Helen Gogas,Thomas Haalck,Josef Koller,Reinhard Dummer,Ralf Gutzmer,Norbert H. Brockmeyer,Erhard Hölzle,Cord Sunderkötter,Cornelia Mauch,Annette Stein,Lars Alexander Schneider,Maurizio Podda,Daniela Göppner,Dirk Schadendorf,Michael Weichenthal +20 more
TL;DR: Although the safety and QoL profiles for the intermittent regimen were favorable, no significant difference was observed for survival while the HR for relapse with iHDI was increased, and an i HDI regimen cannot be recommended as adjuvant treatment for high-risk melanoma.

Interactions from complementary and alternative medicine in patients with melanoma.
Carmen Loquai,Irene Schmidtmann,Marlene Garzarolli,Martin Kaatz,Katharina C. Kähler,Peter Kurschat,Frank Meiss,Oliver Micke,Ralph Muecke,Karsten Muenstedt,Dorothee Nashan,Annette Stein,Christoph Stoll,Dagmar Dechent,Jutta Huebner +14 more
TL;DR: To protect melanoma patients from potential harm by the combination of their cancer treatment and CAM usage, patients should be encouraged to report their CAM use, while oncologists should be trained on evidence of CAM, and patient guidance for saver CAM use.
