The webpage cited in the text contains all of the large datasets presented, a table of contents, answers to selected exercises, miscellaneous links, and the computer code used in Appendix C. I found the material reasonable, but would have liked to have seen the R code for additional case studies worked out to the same extent as the case study in Appendix C. I felt there were other techniques used sufficiently often throughout the text that some exemplary code, either on the webpage or the Appendix, would have been appropriate. In particular, the EM algorithm is used repeatedly in the latter half of the book, but no code implementing EM methods is provided. Granted, the EM steps are spelled out in some detail in numerous places in the book, but some typical code would be useful. In an ambitious work such as this, it is easy to find ways in which the material could be reorganized, and suggestions for reorganization necessarily depend on what the user has in mind. With that caveat, I think the material in the very last chapter could be incorporated, or at least integrated, into either Chapter 6 or Chapter 11. The transition between the discussion of Bayesian decision analysis in Chapter 23 and posterior inference in those other chapters is essentially seamless and could be easily incorporated into the authors’ analysis rubric presented in Chapter 11. This is a book that challenges the user in its sophisticated approach toward data analysis in general and Bayesian methods in particular. I am thoroughly excited to have this book in hand to supplement course material and to offer research collaborators and clients at our consulting lab more sophisticated methods to solve their research problems.

An Invariant Approach to Statistical Analysis of Shapes

Macrovibrissae are specialized tactile sensory hairs present in most mammalian orders, used in maxillary mechanoreception or "face touch." Some mammals have highly organized vibrissae and are able to "whisk" them. Movement of vibrissae is influenced by intrinsic vibrissa musculature, striated muscle bands that attach directly to the vibrissa capsule. It is unclear if primates have organized vibrissae or intrinsic vibrissa musculature and it is uncertain if they can move their vibrissae. The present study used histomorphological techniques to compare vibrissae among 19 primates and seven non-primate mammalian taxa. Upper lips of these mammals were sectioned and processed for histochemical analysis. While controlling for phylogenetic effects the following hypotheses were tested: 1) mammals with well-organized vibrissae possess intrinsic vibrissa musculature and 2) intrinsic vibrissa musculature is best developed in nocturnal, arboreal taxa. Our qualitative analyses show that only arboreal, nocturnal prosimians possess intrinsic musculature. Not all taxa that possessed organized vibrissae had intrinsic vibrissa musculature. Phylogenetic comparative analyses revealed a 70% probability that stem mammals, primates, and haplorhines possessed intrinsic vibrissa musculature and well-organized vibrissae. These two traits most likely coevolved according to a discrete phylogenetic analysis. These results indicate that nocturnal, arboreal primates have the potential to more actively use their vibrissae in spatial recognition and navigation tasks than diurnal, more terrestrial species, but there is a clear phylogenetic signal involved in the evolution of primate vibrissae and "face touch."

Comparative histomorphology of intrinsic vibrissa musculature among primates: implications for the evolution of sensory ecology and “face touch”

This study investigates the vomeronasal organ in extant nocturnal strepsirhines as a model for ancestral primates. Cadaveric samples from 10 strepsirhine species, ranging from fetal to adult ages, were studied histologically. Dimensions of structures in the vomeronasal complex, such as the vomeronasal neuroepithelium (VNNE) and vomeronasal cartilage (VNC) were measured in serial sections and selected specimens were studied immunohistochemically to determine physiological aspects of the vomeronasal sensory neurons (VSNs). Osteological features corresponding to vomeronasal structures were studied histologically and related to 3-D CT reconstructions. The VNC consistently rests in a depression on the palatal portion of the maxilla, which we refer to as the vomeronasal groove (VNG). Most age comparisons indicate that in adults VNNE is about twice the length compared with perinatal animals. In VNNE volume, adults are 2- to 3-fold larger compared with perinatal specimens. Across ages, a strong linear relationship exists between VNNE dimensions and body length, mass, and midfacial length. Results indicate that the VNNE of nocturnal strepsirhines is neurogenic postnatally based on GAP43 expression. In addition, based on Olfactory Marker Protein expression, terminally differentiated VSNs are present in the VNNE. Therefore, nocturnal strepsirhines have basic similarities to rodents in growth and maturational characteristics of VSNs. These results indicate that a functional vomeronasal system is likely present in all nocturnal strepsirhines. Finally, given that osteological features such as the VNG are visible on midfacial bones, primate fossils can be assessed to determine whether primate ancestors possessed a vomeronasal complex morphologically similar to that of modern nocturnal strepsirhines.

Premature fusion of cranial sutures in craniosynostosis has been thought to lead to craniostenosis, which in turn may lead to increased intracranial pressures. In 41 consecutive patients with craniosynostosis, intracranial pressure and intracranial volume were measured. Of the 41 patients, 38 (92.6%) had raised intracranial pressure but only 4 (9.7%) had a decreased skull volume. In the present study, there is no correlation between intracranial volume and intracranial pressure. This study confirms that the measurement of intracranial volume, a non invasive procedure, cannot be used to assess intracranial pressure and to avoid an invasive procedure.

Relationship Between Intracranial Pressure and Intracranial Volume in Craniosynostosis

Explanations for the chemosensory abilities of newborn mammals focus primarily on food (milk) acquisition and communication (e.g., maternal–infant bonding). However, the relative importance of the main and accessory (vomeronasal) olfactory systems is hypothesized to differ at birth between altricial and precocial mammals. Strepsirrhines (lemurs and lorises) possess main and accessory olfactory systems, and vary in life‐history traits related to infant dependency and maturation. Accordingly, this study examines the size and maturational characteristics of vomeronasal (VNNE) and olfactory (OE) neuroepithelia in strepsirrhines. Serially sectioned heads of 18 infant cadavers were examined microscopically for neuroepithelial distribution. Measurements were taken on the length of the nasal fossa on one side that was occupied by VNNE and OE. The data were corrected for body size using the cranial length or body mass, and were then examined for correlation with several life‐history variables, as well as activity pattern. In addition, immunohistochemistry was used to identify cells in the VNNE and OE that express olfactory marker protein (OMP), a marker of mature olfactory neurons. Relative OE extent was not significantly correlated with any of the life‐history variables. Relative VNNE length was negatively correlated with relative gestation length and relative neonatal mass (P<0.05). However, when we corrected for phylogenetic relationships, we found no significant correlations between either of the neuroepithelial measurements and life‐history variables. Immunohistochemical findings suggest that OE has more OMP‐reactive cells than VNNE in all species. OMP‐reactive cells appear to be less numerous in diurnal species compared to most nocturnal species. These results indicate that the VNNE may be relatively longer at birth in altricial species. However, it remains uncertain how phylogeny and/or ontogeny may explain these findings. Am. J. RESEARCH ARTICLE Perinatal Size and Maturation of the Olfactory and Vomeronasal Neuroepithelia in Lorisoids and Lemuroids

Nonsyndromic coronal suture synostosis produces predictable and well-documented morphologies of the cranial vault with anteroposterior growth restrictions and mediolateral compensatory growth. The potential effects of nonsyndromic coronal suture synostosis on mandibular form are not as clear, however. This study was designed to evaluate whether coronal suture synostosis is associated with alterations in mandibular form by using a familial rabbit model of coronal suture synostosis. To assess this potential relation, the following hypothesis was tested: mandibular form in rabbits with coronal suture synostosis is significantly (P 0.05). In particular, distances involving the coronoid process in rabbits with coronal suture synostosis were significantly different, paralleling previous work in human patients with coronal synostosis. There are no intrinsic condylar linear or shape differences between any of these groups, however. The form difference noted is most likely secondary to the synostosed coronal suture and may reflect alterations in the cranial base or masticatory musculature in this rabbit model.

The functional morphology of the primate craniomandibular complex and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) components is frequently discussed in terms of gross skeletal structure. At the histomorphologic level, however, the TMJ has only been studied in Old World anthropoids. The present study is designed to describe the microanatomy of the condylar cartilage of the TMJ in two closely related species of greater galago: the exudativorous Otolemur crassicaudatus and the frugivorous O. garnettii. TMJs with intact joint capsules were harvested from adult, cadaveric specimens of these species (four O. crassicaudatus and five O. garnettii). The samples were decalcified, processed for paraffin sectioning, and sectioned at 10‐18mm in the coronal plane. The samples were then stained with hematoxylin/eosin, Gomori trichrome, and Alcian blue, and examined with a photomicroscope. Generally, condylar cartilage in O. crassicaudatus was thickest both laterally and centrally, while O. garnettii had the relatively thickest cartilage laterally. Both species displayed a superficial articular zone, a middle proliferative zone, and a deeply located hypertrophic zone in the condylar cartilage. O. crassicaudatus typically had the greatest cell density in each of these zones. In addition, O. crassicaudatus had focal concentrations of Alcian blue laterally and centrally, while O. garnettii had the greatest reactivity in the central portion only. These results suggest that O. crassicaudatus may be specialized to resist greater compressive force at the TMJ condylar cartilage in specific regions of the mandibular condyle. Am. J.
