- 09 Feb 2021
TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were conducted to uncover mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide- and cysteine-mediated inhibition of nitrate respiratory growth for the NRB Intrasporangium calvum C5.

Genetic analysis of electroactive biofilms
Dena L. Cologgi,Anne E. Otwell,Anne E. Otwell,Allison M. Speers,John A Rotondo,Gemma Reguera +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a transposon mutagenesis method and a high-throughput screening assay were developed to identify mutants of Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA interrupted in the initial stages of surface colonization (attachment and monolayer formation) and the vertical growth and maturation of multilayered biofilms.

Negative plant-microbiome feedback limits productivity in aquaponics
Jessica A. Day,Anne E. Otwell,Christian Diener,Kourtney E. Tams,Brad M. Bebout,Angela M. Detweiler,Michael D. Lee,Madeline T. Scott,Wilson Ta,Monica Ha,Shienna A. Carreon,Kenny Tong,Abdirizak A. Ali,Sean M. Gibbons,Sean M. Gibbons,Nitin S. Baliga +15 more
TL;DR: Investigation of how the practice of continued transfer of microbial communities from pre-existing systems might promote or impede productivity of aquaponics found reduced productivity in L. sativa plant and root growth was significantly reduced across all replicates inoculated with the established microbiome.

Systems biology approaches towards predictive microbial ecology
Anne E. Otwell,Adrián López García de Lomana,Sean M. Gibbons,Sean M. Gibbons,Mónica V. Orellana,Mónica V. Orellana,Nitin S. Baliga +6 more
TL;DR: This work advocates for the development of realistic and predictive gene regulatory network models for environmental responses that extend from single-cell resolution to ecosystems, which is essential to understand how microbial communities involved in N2 O production and consumption will respond to future environmental conditions.
Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) productivity influenced by microbial inocula under nitrogen-limited conditions in aquaponics
Jessica A. Day,Christian Diener,Anne E. Otwell,Kourtney E. Tams,Brad M. Bebout,Angela M. Detweiler,Michael D. Lee,Madeline T. Scott,Wilson Ta,Monica Ha,Shienna A. Carreon,Kenny Tong,Abdirizak A. Ali,Sean M. Gibbons,Sean M. Gibbons,Nitin S. Baliga +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that inoculation from a pre-existing system, rather than from a commercial inoculum, is associated with lower yields.
