Formulation of functionalized PLGA-PEG nanoparticles for in vivo targeted drug delivery

Insect pollinators of crops and wild plants are under threat globally and their decline or loss could have profound economic and environmental consequences. Here, we argue that multiple anthropogenic pressures – including land-use intensification, climate change, and the spread of alien species and diseases – are primarily responsible for insect-pollinator declines. We show that a complex interplay between pressures (eg lack of food sources, diseases, and pesticides) and biological processes (eg species dispersal and interactions) at a range of scales (from genes to ecosystems) underpins the general decline in insect-pollinator populations. Interdisciplinary research on the nature and impacts of these interactions will be needed if human food security and ecosystem function are to be preserved. We highlight key areas that require research focus and outline some practical steps to alleviate the pressures on pollinators and the pollination services they deliver to wild and crop plants.

Herewereport evidence forobject-related activation. Suchactivation waslocated atthelateral-posterior aspect oftheoccipital lobe, just abutting theposterior aspect ofthemotion-sensitive areaMT/V5,inaregion termed the lateral occipital complex (LO). LOshowedpreferential acti- vation toimages ofobjects, compared toawiderangeof texture patterns. Thisactivation wasnotcaused byaglobal difference intheFourier spatial frequency content ofobjects versus texture images, since object images produced enhanced LOactivation compared totextures matched inpowerspectra butrandomized inphase. Thepreferential activation toob- jects alsocould notbeexplained bydifferent patterns ofeye movements: similar levels ofactivation wereobserved when subjects fixated ontheobjects andwhentheyscanned the objects withtheir eyes. Additional manipulations suchas spatial frequency filtering anda4-fold change invisual size didnotaffect LO activation. Theseresults' suggest thatthe enhanced responses toobjects werenotamanifestation of low-level visual processing. A striking demonstration that activity inLOisuniquely correlated toobject detectability was produced bythe"Lincoln" illusion, inwhichblurring of objects digitized intolarge blocks paradoxically increases their recognizability. Suchblurring ledtosignificant en- hancement ofLOactivation. Despite thepreferential activa- tion toobjects, LO didnotseemtobeinvolved inthefinal, "semantic," stages oftherecognition process. Thus,objects varying widely intheir recognizability (e.g., famous faces, commonobjects, andunfamiliar three-dimensional abstract sculptures) activated ittoasimilar degree. Theseresults are thusevidence foranintermediate linkinthechainofpro- cessing stages leading toobject recognition inhumanvisual cortex.

Plants in their natural habitats adapt to drought stress in the environment through a variety of mechanisms, ranging from transient responses to low soil moisture to major survival mechanisms of escape by early flowering in absence of seasonal rainfall. However, crop plants selected by humans to yield products such as grain, vegetable, or fruit in favorable environments with high inputs of water and fertilizer are expected to yield an economic product in response to inputs. Crop plants selected for their economic yield need to survive drought stress through mechanisms that maintain crop yield. Studies on model plants for their survival under stress do not, therefore, always translate to yield of crop plants under stress, and different aspects of drought stress response need to be emphasized. The crop plant model rice ( Oryza sativa) is used here as an example to highlight mechanisms and genes for adaptation of crop plants to drought stress.

Neuroimaging studies have identified at least two bilateral areas of the visual extrastriate cortex that respond more to pictures of faces than objects in normal human subjects in the middle fusiform gyrus [the 'fusiform face area' (FFA)] and, more posteriorly, in the inferior occipital cortex ['occipital face area' (OFA)], with a right hemisphere dominance. However, it is not yet clear how these regions interact which each other and whether they are all necessary for normal face perception. It has been proposed that the right hemisphere FFA acts as an isolated ('modular') processing system for faces or that this region receives its face-sensitive inputs from the OFA in a feedforward hierarchical model of face processing. To test these proposals, we report a detailed neuropsychological investigation combined with a neuroimaging study of a patient presenting a deficit restricted to face perception, consecutive to bilateral occipito-temporal lesions. Due to the asymmetry of the lesions, the left middle fusiform gyrus and the right inferior occipital cortex were damaged but the right middle fusiform gyrus was structurally intact. Using functional MRI, we disclosed a normal activation of the right FFA in response to faces in the patient despite the absence of any feedforward inputs from the right OFA, located in a damaged area of cortex. Together, these findings show that the integrity of the right OFA is necessary for normal face perception and suggest that the face-sensitive responses observed at this level in normal subjects may arise from feedback connections from the right FFA. In agreement with the current literature on the anatomical basis of prosopagnosia, it is suggested that the FFA and OFA in the right hemisphere and their re-entrant integration are necessary for normal face processing.

A network of occipito-temporal face-sensitive areas besides the right middle fusiform gyrus is necessary for normal face processing.

Behavioral studies indicate a right hemisphere advantage for processing a face as a whole and a left hemisphere superiority for processing based on face features. The present PET study identifies the anatomical localization of these effects in well-defined regions of the middle fusiform gyri of both hemispheres. The right middle fusiform gyrus, previously described as a face-specific region, was found to be more activated when matching whole faces than face parts whereas this pattern of activity was reversed in the left homologous region. These lateralized differences appeared to be specific to faces since control objects processed either as wholes or parts did not induce any change of activity within these regions. This double dissociation between two modes of face processing brings new evidence regarding the lateralized localization of face individualization mechanisms in the human brain.
