Objective: As cancer survival rates continue to increase, so will the demand for care from family and friends, particularly in more isolated settings. This study aims to examine the needs of cancer caregivers in regional and remote Australia. Methods: A total of 239 informal (i.e., non-professional) cancer caregivers (e.g., family/friends) from regional and remote Queensland, Australia, completed the Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool for Cancer Caregivers (CNAT-C). The frequencies of individuals reporting specific needs were calculated. Logistic regression analyses assessed the association between unmet needs and demographic characteristics and cancer type. Results: The most frequently endorsed needs were lodging near hospital (77%), information about the disease (74%), and tests and treatment (74%). The most frequent unmet needs were treatment near home (37%), help with economic burden (32%), and concerns about the person being cared for (32%). Younger and female caregivers were significantly more likely to report unmet needs overall (OR = 2.12; OR = 0.58), and unmet healthcare staff needs (OR = 0.35; OR = 1.99, respectively). Unmet family and social support needs were also significantly more likely among younger caregivers (OR = 0.35). Caregivers of breast cancer patients (OR = 0.43) and older caregivers (OR = 0.53) were significantly less likely to report unmet health and psychology needs. Proportions of participants reporting needs were largely similar across demographic groups and cancer type with some exceptions. Conclusions: Caregiver health, practical issues associated with travel, and emotional strain are all areas where regional and remote caregivers require more support. Caregivers’ age and gender, time since diagnosis and patient cancer type should be considered when determining the most appropriate supportive care.

The Supportive Care Needs of Regional and Remote Cancer Caregivers

ABSTRACT The present study examined COVID-19-related stressors associated with depressive symptom in the older population and whether a caregiving role made a difference in the results. Data from the COVID-19 Supplement to the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) were used to compare two groups of older adults: 248 older caregivers and 1,437 older adults without a caregiving role. A multiple linear regression analysis showed that a lack of time for self-care and healthcare delay were significant stressors in both groups. Missing social events and staying home were associated with depressive symptom only in the non-caregiver group.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a disease process that affects perceptions, emotions, social behaviour and the ability to accept reality correctly. Caregivers with schizophrenia often feel anxious. This study aims to determine the description of anxiety in family caregivers of schizophrenia patients. Methods: This research is quantitative research with a descriptive approach. The number of respondents was 63 according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Using purposive sampling technique. This research was conducted at the Manyar District Health Center, Gresik Regency in March 2022. Processing and Data Analysis using Editing, coding, scoring, tabulating and percentages. In this study, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety ( HARS) questionnaire was used. Ethical Approval by the Faculty of Health, University Muhammadiyah of Gresik number 029/KET/II.3.UMG/KEP/A/2022, February 25, 2022. Results: The results of this study indicate the level of anxiety experienced by family caregivers of schizophrenic patients, that most of them experienced severe anxiety with many as 40 respondents (40.9%), a small proportion had no anxiety as many as 5 respondents (4.6%). Conclusions: Family caregivers who treat schizophrenia patients mostly experience mild anxiety. It is expected that the family caregiver can do distracted and deep breathing relaxation to reduce the level of anxiety experienced by the family caregiver.

Description of anxiety in the patient's family caregiver schizophrenia in the community health center of manyar, gresik district

Os cuidados paliativos (CP) visam integrar aspectos físicos, psicológicos e espirituais de pacientes com doenças ameaçadoras da vida. Um de seus princípios consiste em oferecer suporte aos familiares, que também se inserem em contexto de vulnerabilidade. Por isso, eles devem se sentir contemplados e satisfeitos com os cuidados ofertados. Este trabalho objetiva compreender quais fatores interferem na satisfação de familiares de pacientes com doenças ameaçadoras da vida sob CP na Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Goiânia. Trata-se de um estudo transversal analítico realizado através de uma ficha de identificação e da escala FAMCARE. Foram avaliados 27 acompanhantes, que se mostraram satisfeitos em todas as dimensões da escala FAMCARE, sendo que cuidadores formais, acompanhantes do sexo feminino e de pacientes com menor número de comorbidades e maior tempo de diagnóstico se mostraram mais satisfeitos. Foi concluído que os acompanhantes dos pacientes se mostraram satisfeitos com o serviço, dado que aponta a importância desse cuidado para pacientes portadores de doença ameaçadora da vida e seus familiares. É de extrema importância que se estabeleça um vínculo entre a equipe de CP e os acompanhantes, permitindo a elucidação de dúvidas e a oferta de amparo, configurando um elemento essencial para que os princípios dos CP sejam contemplados. 

Nível de satisfação dos acompanhantes de pacientes sob cuidados paliativos na Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Goiânia

Background/Objectives: To understand the lived experiences of the informal caregivers of people with chronic noncommunicable diseases and their interpretations of the significance of that care. The perspectives of men and women interacting with people in a situation of chronicity are examined. Methods: This qualitative, phenomenological, hermeneutic study was based on Van Manen’s comprehensive and interpretative vision. Criterion-oriented non-probability random sampling was used. In-depth interviews were used to collect the information. Twenty informal caregivers participated in the study. Results: The following five themes emerged: transformation of the caregiver’s world; uncertainty of care; tireless guardianship and unwavering devotion; isolation and emotional exhaustion; and imbalance between caring for others and the self. Conclusions: The experience of informal caregivers reveals that both men and women face significant challenges, albeit from gender-differentiated perspectives and experiences. Men and women elaborate different meanings of caregiving, reflecting their gender roles and expectations. Therefore, an inclusive and equitable approach that recognizes and addresses these gender differences is essential in order to improve the support and quality of life for all informal caregivers, respecting and valuing their unique voices and experiences. An inclusive and equitable approach that recognizes gender intersections is required to improve support and the quality of life for informal caregivers. 

Time for Care: Male and Female Voices Based on Their Caregiving Experiences

Background: Many studies have been underlined as care giving for people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is highly stressful and has significant negative consequences, such as anxiety and depression. Objective: The specific aim of our study is to establish whether a difference exists in the prevalence of depression of family caregivers of Alzheimer’s disease patients and healthy subjects not caregiver. Methods: Study group (n = 60) consists of caregivers of patients affected by Alzheimer’s disease, whereas control group (n = 120) consists of healthy individuals who are not care giving (from at least 5 years). All the subjects were subdivided on the basis of the following independent variables: sex, age, marital status and educational level. The subjects of study and control groups studied have filled in the following tests: IPAT CDQ e IPAT ASQ Tests by Cattell which describe depression and anxiety. Such tests have been validated on the adult and elderly Italian population. Statistical analysis: Student t test has been applied for the comparison between experimental and control groups. Results: The caregivers show higher levels of anxiety (medium to high, P < 0.001) and depression in comparison to the group of control (medium to high, P < 0.001). This result indicates the caregiver shows serious depression. Conclusions: The high levels of depression and anxiety suggest the following considerations: interventions of social and psychological support are fundamental not only to maintain the patient in the family nucleus but also to maintain the caregiver’s psychological health.

Evaluation of Anxiety and Depression in Caregivers of Patients Affected by Alzheimer’s Disease

OBJECTIVES Older people are not traditionally expected to become caregivers. For this reason, the experience of caregiving in older persons has not been explored adequately in the research on gender differences. The objective of this study was to assess the caregiver burden among older family members who care for cancer patients facing the end of their lives, in order to compare their differences according to gender (male vs. female). METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 102 older caregivers (aged ≥65 years) of hospice patients were interviewed through the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI). The sample group was divided into two gender subgroups. RESULTS Compared with male caregivers, the older female group reported significantly higher scores in the CBI-physical subscale (P = 0.028), and in the CBI, the overall score (P = 0.0399) confirmed by the generalized linear model (multivariate) evaluation that included possible predictors in the model. There were no significant differences in the other CBI subscale scores (time-dependent, developmental, social, and emotional). SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Older female caregivers are at higher risk of experiencing burden and worse physical health compared with men. Further research is needed in modern palliative care to assess the role of gender differences in the experience of caregiving when the caregiver is an older person.
