The Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) wireline system connects to and controls processing of calls to a Personal Communication Service subscriber's wireless handset via a home base station or a wireless communication network. Depending on its current location, the subscriber's handset automatically registers with the base station or with a mobility controller of the wireless network. A new registration with the base station when the handset comes within range causes that station to update the subscriber's home location register in a central data base of the AIN. Similarly, when a handset first registers with a mobility controller, that controller updates the subscriber's home location register in the central data base of the AIN. In response to calls directed to the subscriber, the AIN accesses the home location register to determine the current location where the handset is registered. The AIN then uses that data to route the call to the current location. In response to calls from the handset, the central data base provides instruction data to the land line network and/or a mobility controller to extend a requested special service to the calling subscriber.

Personal communications service using wireline/wireless integration

The present invention can be used to facilitate the integration of wireless capability provided by wireless access points into an enterprise computer network. A gateway server is interposed between wireless access points and protected networks to provide security and integration functions, for example, authentication, access control, link privacy, link integrity, and bandwidth metering in various embodiments. Use of such a gateway server allows substantial control to be gained over network access even with the use of relatively simple access points. In general, such a gateway server receives a request to access the protected network. An authentication subsystem of the gateway server authenticates the user, preferably by accessing an external authentication server and returns a role to the authenticated user. An access controller in the gateway server provides differential access to the protected network based on the user's assigned role. A multiple gateway servers can be connected together to form a mesh network architecture.

Method and system for managing data traffic in wireless networks

Packets are transmitted between stations of an ad-hoc network of mobile stations by using routing tables which are stored at each station of the network. Routing information is broadcast or multicast according to three schedules; upon demand to show new routes, periodically to show recently changed routes, and less often to provide a complete dump of all known routes. A new route will trigger immediate re-broadcast so that this information is quickly disseminated. A new route is defined to be one with a better metric or a metric of infinity. A metric of infinity indicates a broken link; i.e., a particular destination is no longer reachable and thus all other destinations depending upon the newly unreachable destination are themselves unreachable. Periodically, routes are advertised. This advertisement serves primarily in most cases to notify all neighbors that everything they have stored is still correct regarding the broadcasting Mobile Host. On rarer occasions when the routing topology changes, the demand nature of the incremental update displaces the periodic transmission until an update interval transpires. In order to damp out oscillations, data is kept about how often the routes change. Based on this data, a decision may be made to delay advertising routes which are about to change soon, thus damping oscillations of the route tables.

Highly dynamic destination-sequenced destination vector routing for mobile computers

A technique for spread-spectrum communication which uses more than one mode and more than one frequency band. Selectable modes include narrowband mode and spread-spectrum mode, or cellular mode and microcellular mode. Selectable frequency bands include both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands, particularly frequency bands including the 902-928 MHz, 1850-1990 MHz, and 2.4-2.4835 GHz frequency bands. Spread-spectrum communication channels are 10 MHz or less in width. The frequency band onto which spread-spectrum signals are encoded may be changed upon a change in environment or other control trigger, such as establishment or de-establishment of communication with a private access network. A multi-band transmitter comprises a single frequency synthesizer and a frequency source (e.g., a local oscillator), coupled to a selectable band pass filter. A multi-band receiver capable of monitoring one or more frequency bands comprises bank of bandpass filters and a demodulator comprising a single frequency synthesizer and a frequency source.

Multi-band, multi-mode spread-spectrum communication system

A microcellular communications network includes a plurality of base station units and corresponding antenna units. The base station units are housed in a common location. Each includes either conventional transmitters and receivers or all digital transmitter and receiver equipment, and interface circuitry to a mobile telecommunications switching office. The microcell traffic output is applied to a frame generator/multiplexer. The output of the frame generator/multiplexer is applied to a digitally modulated laser. The laser output is conveyed by fiber to a remote antenna unit, which demultiplexes the microcell traffic signal and applies it to a digital-to-analog converter. The output of the digital-to-analog converter is applied to a power amplifier, which in turn is connected to a main antenna. RF signals from the mobile units are received at both a main and a diversity antenna. The received signals are filtered, digitized, multiplexed together and transmitted over the optical fiber back to the base station. The strongest signal is selected for use.

Cellular communications system with centralized base stations and distributed antenna units

A handoff system where handoff requests are initiated not only by a home or serving base station, but also by neighboring base stations. As in conventional handoff, a serving base station may initiate a handoff request when the signal strength of one of its mobile stations falls below a predetermined threshold. In addition, neighboring base stations monitor the signal strength of neighboring mobile stations and request that a neighboring mobile station be handed off when that signal strength reaches a predetermined level. Thus, a handoff request may come from the serving base station because of a poor call connection or from a neighboring base station because of a possible strong call connection.

A method for optimizing the use of channels, the changing of channels and handover procedures in a mobile telecommunications system for instance, wherein parameters (C/I, P, I, L, N, ς, m) belonging to the mobile telecommunications system generate the load values (Bc, Bp, Bi, Bl, Bn, Bς, Bm) for the connections via different channels/base stations between subscribers in a public telephone network and mobile stations in the mobile telecommunications systems. Different kinds of parameters can be compared directly by means of the load values (Bc, Bp, Bi, Bl, Bn, Bς, Bm) which are combined (S1-S5) to provide a total load value (Btot2, Btot4) for each connection. A first total load value (Btot2) is generated for a connection set-up between one of the subscribers and one of the mobile stations. The total load values (Btot4, Btot5) for the connection are estimated for alternative channels/base stations and these total load values are compared with the first total load value (Btot2). The system changes to the channel/base station that has the most favourable load value (Btot4), on the basis of the comparison. The load values (Btot2, Btot4) can also be used to optimize the resources within one or more base stations, so that the sum of the load values for the connections within one or more base stations will become the most advantageous.

A method and a device for the utilization of channels in a radio communications system

Several mobile assisted handoff methods for use in the cellular communication system comprising a plurality of cells are disclosed. First, the quality level of a cell a mobile station is presently using is measured to determine whether the quality level is above or below a threshold. If the quality level is below the threshold, a primary list of cells is assigned to the mobile station, whereas if the quality level is above the threshold, a secondary list of cells is assigned to the mobile station. The quality level of each of the assigned cells is then measured by the mobile station and reported to the communication system.

Mobile assisted handoff

A cellular mobile radiotelephone system listens for call accesses on a control channel of an umbrella cell and on a control channel of a microcell located within said umbrella cell and responds to the call access only on the control channel of the umbrella cell. More particularly, the microcells within a particular umbrella cell are provided with listen-only control channel at the same frequency as the uplink control channel of the umbrella cell. An umbrella cell and one or several of its microcells may therefore each receive the same call accesses. During call access, the umbrella cell and each of the microcells determines the strength of the received signal and forwards this information to the system. The system selects the most appropriate cell out of the umbrella cell and the microcells to handle the call and causes the umbrella cell to respond to the call access on its downlink control channel. Among the umbrella cell and its microcells, there are therefore a plurality of uplink control channels, one for each defined cell, and a single downlink control channel, namely that of the umbrella cell. Cell planning remains unchanged as does a directed retry mechanism. Because there is only a single downlink control channel within the coverage area of an umbrella cell, excessive rescanning is avoided. Furthermore, a call is established at the outset in the most appropriate cell, using resources more efficiently and avoiding congestion in the umbrella cell.
