Rehabilitating the industrial revolution. Gradualist perspectives now dominate economic and social histories of the industrial revolution. Analyses of economic change which rely on growth accounting and macroeconomic estimates of productivity indicate continuity with the past; social historians have followed in turning aside from the analysis of new class formations. This article challenges these perspectives. Currently accepted economic indicators and recent social history underplay the extent and uniqueness of economic and social transformation. The article emphasizes change in technology, the use of a female and child labour force, regional specialization, demographic behaviour, and political change.

Rehabilitating The Industrial Revolution

In the centuries leading up to the Industrial Revolution, Western Europe gradually pulled ahead of other world regions in terms of technological creativity, population growth, and income per capita. We argue that superior institutions for the creation and dissemination of productive knowledge help explain the European advantage. We build a model of technological progress in a pre-industrial economy that emphasizes the person-to-person transmission of tacit knowledge. The young learn as apprentices from the old. Institutions such as the family, the clan, the guild, and the market organize who learns from whom. We argue that medieval European institutions such as guilds, and specific features such as journeymanship, can explain the rise of Europe relative to regions that relied on the transmission of knowledge within extended families or clans.

This is the most in-depth analysis of inequality and social polarization ever attempted for a preindustrial society. Using data from the archives of the Venetian Terraferma, and compared with information available for elsewhere in Europe, Guido Alfani and Matteo Di Tullio demonstrate that the rise of the fiscal-military state served to increase economic inequality in the early modern period. Preindustrial fiscal systems tended to be regressive in nature, and increased post-tax inequality compared to pre-tax - in contrast to what we would assume is the case in contemporary societies. This led to greater and greater disparities in wealth, which were made worse still as taxes were collected almost entirely to fund war and defence rather than social welfare. Though focused on Old Regime Europe, Alfani and Di Tullio's findings speak to contemporary debates about the roots of inequality and social stratification.

Family memoirs from Venice (15th-17th centuries)

These days, the issue of unpaid family work immediately evokes the world of care and home -keeping, -help, and -schooling. Unpaid work has become synonymous with care. Years of research and activist demands have resulted in an increasingly open recognition of these domestic tasks in social science research, at the institutional level, and among the public. From this perspective the factoring of these activities in the GDP of certain countries is a sure sign of a positive reversal in perception (Folbre & Wagman, 1993). However, this equation has produced an unexpected side effect: a relatively cursory consideration of unpaid market work within family productive activities. The goal of this special issue is to begin to clear the way for a historical approach to a topic that is barely addressed in the sociology and anthropology of gender and family and quite neglected by historians, by attempting to observe it across a broad swath of western and southern Europe.

Cet article est base sur l’etude de plus d’un millier de contrats d’apprentissage et de service domestique, enregistres aupres d’une magistrature judiciaire venitienne, la Giustizia Vecchia. L’analyse des contrats montre les roles des differents acteurs ainsi que le role de l’E tat comme garant dans les relations entre maitres et apprentis. L’etude des âges a la stipulation du contrat, de sa duree, des origines et de la situation familiale (notamment le pourcentage d’orphelins et, surtout, d’orphelines, de pere) des apprentis ainsi que du choix du metier montre les differences entre la mise en apprentissage des filles et des garcons. Tout en etant, dans l’ensemble, minoritaires et confinees surtout dans les metiers textiles, les filles recoivent des formations plus longues et mieux payees que les garcons dans certains secteurs de l’Art de la soie.
