New Real-Time PCR Assay for Rapid Detection of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Directly from Specimens Containing a Mixture of Staphylococci
Ann Huletsky,Richard Giroux,V. Rossbach,Martin Gagnon,M. Vaillancourt,M. Bernier,F. Gagnon,K. Truchon,Martine Bastien,F. J. Picard,A. van Belkum,Marc Ouellette,Paul H. Roy,Michel G. Bergeron +13 more
TL;DR: A real-time multiplex PCR assay which allows the detection of MRSA directly from clinical specimens containing a mixture of staphylococci in <1 h and was not inhibited in the presence of high copy numbers of MSSA, MRCoNS, or MSCoNS.

The initial state of the human gut microbiome determines its reshaping by antibiotics
Frédéric Raymond,Amin Ahmed Ouameur,Maxime Déraspe,Naeem Iqbal,Hélène Gingras,Bédis Dridi,Philippe Leprohon,Pier-Luc Plante,Richard Giroux,Ève Bérubé,Johanne Frenette,Dominique K. Boudreau,Jean-Luc Simard,Isabelle Chabot,Marc-Christian Domingo,Sylvie Trottier,Maurice Boissinot,Ann Huletsky,Paul H. Roy,Marc Ouellette,Michel G. Bergeron,Jacques Corbeil +21 more
TL;DR: It is shown that standard antibiotic treatment can alter the gut microbiome in a specific, reproducible and predictable manner, and a subgroup of participants who were enriched in the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter cloacae after exposure to the antibiotic, an effect linked to lower initial microbiome diversity and to a Bacteroides enterotype is identified.
Identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus carriage in less than 1 hour during a hospital surveillance program.
Ann Huletsky,Pierre Lebel,François J. Picard,M. Bernier,Martin Gagnon,Nathalie Boucher,Michel G. Bergeron +6 more
TL;DR: An easy-to-use real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay suitable for specific detection of MRSA in nasal specimens in <1 h is developed and should facilitate the efficacy of MRsa surveillance programs.

Use of tuf Sequences for Genus-Specific PCR Detection and Phylogenetic Analysis of 28 Streptococcal Species
François J. Picard,Danbing Ke,Dominique K. Boudreau,Maurice Boissinot,Ann Huletsky,Dave Richard,Marc Ouellette,Paul H. Roy,Michel G. Bergeron +8 more
TL;DR: Tuf appears more suitable than the 16S ribosomal RNA gene for the development of diagnostic assays for the detection and identification of streptococcal species because of its higher level of species-specific genetic divergence.

Inactivation of the ampD gene in Pseudomonas aeruginosa leads to moderate-basal-level and hyperinducible AmpC β-lactamase expression
TL;DR: It is shown that the amino acid substitutions identified in AmpD do not cause the altered phenotype of AmpC β-lactamase expression in the P. aeruginosa mutants, which suggests that further change at another unknown genetic locus may be causing total derepressed AmpC production.
