Crossbreeding effects on reproductive traits of does and growth and carcass traits of kids

Pregnancy rate, calf survival rate to weaning and calf age at weaning of several types of crossbred cows (2/3 or more Brahman) were compared to those of straightbred Brahman and Angus cows over a 129 period at Subtropical Agricultural Research Station near Brooksville, FL. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative importance of additive vs nonadditive genetic effects on reproductive and calf sudval traits in a population of cattle whose foundation was selected on the basis of superior reproductive performance under harsh environmental conditions. Best linear unbiased estimates (BLUE) of direct additive effect (measured as the deviation of Brahman additive breed effect from Angus) for pregnancy rate and calf age, measured as traits of the dam, were 6 f 3% and -7.2 +- 2.1 d, respectively. Thus, Bos taurus germ plasm did not increase pregnancy rate but resulted in an earlier calving date. The BLUE of nonadditive (inualocus) direct genetic effects measured as deviations from intralocus group genetic effects in the parental breeds on pregnancy rate and calf age at weaning were 25 +- 4% and -6.4 +- 2.5 d. Nonadditive effects on pregnancy rate were the primary cause of the superior reproductive rates observed in Brahman crossbred cows. Calf survival was considered to be a trait of the calf, and BLUE of direct additive, direct nonadditive, maternal additive and maternal nonadditive genetic effects were obtained, Only maternal nonadditive genetic effects were found to have a significant effect on survival rate (9 k 4%).

Direct and maternal genetic effects due to the introduction of Bos taurus alleles into Brahman cattle in Florida: I. Reproduction and calf survival.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the body weights up to 18 months of age of 12 breed groups of Zebu (Z), Brown Swiss (BS) and Charolais heifers (CH), and their crosses under tropical conditions. A total of 1434 data on weaning weights adjusted to 240 days (WW8), average daily gain to 240 days (ADG8) and 1025 body weights adjusted to 550 days (BW18) and average postweaning daily gain (ADG18) of heifers born from 1981 to 1995 were used. Cows and calves remained together from birth to weaning and grazed on Guinea grass (Panicum maximum). Years of birth were grouped in three periods, because of the small numbers of observations per year (1981-85, 1986-90 and 1991-95). Similarly, months of birth were grouped in three seasons: dry (February to May), rainy (June to September) and windy and rainy (October to January). Ages of dams were classified in six groups ( or=8 years). Breed groups were animals with 12.5%, 25.0%, 50.0%, 62.5%, 75.0% and 100% BS genes and 25.0%, 50.0%, 75.0% and 100% CH genes and also Z and undefined crossbred animals. Data were analysed using a fixed model that included effects of period, and season of birth, age of dam and breed group of heifer. Analyses of variance showed significant (p 0.05). Z heifers gained the least weight to weaning but were similar to BS at 18 months of age. CH were heavier at 18 months of age than BS heifers, but not at weaning. Body weights at 18 months of age of 1/8 and 1/4 BS crossbred heifers were similar (p > 0.05) and lower than F1 (BS x Z) (p < 0.05); however, the later and higher grades of BS had the highest body weights at 18 months of age and were similar to CH and 1/4 CH x 3/4 Z heifers. Undefined crossbred heifers had better performance than the Z breed group. Environmental factors were important sources of variation for pre- and postweaning traits. Under the conditions of this study, crossbred heifers generally performed better than Z heifers up to 18 months of age.

Heterosis and Additive Breed Effects on Feedlot and Carcass Traits from Crossing Angus and Brown Swiss

Data from Hereford, 25% Simmental-75% Hereford, 50% Simmental-50% Hereford, and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford dams were used to estimate maternal heterosis and level of agreement with the dominance model. Cows were located at the Northern Agricultural Research Center near Havre, MT and were managed consistent with practices for western range environments. Sample halves of dam breed groups were bred to Charolais and Tarentaise sires to produce calves at 3 to 8 yr of age. There were 766 exposures to breeding that resulted in 581 calves. Breed group means for most traits supported the dominance model. Maternal heterosis was estimated by regression techniques for 22 cow and calf traits. Maternal heterosis was not significant for day of conception, number of services, gestation length, or calving difficulty. Estimates of maternal heterosis for calf growth traits ranged from .7% for weaning height to 5.2% for weaning weight and 7.5% for weaning condition score. Calf weight per unit of cow weight at weaning showed significant maternal heterosis (7.1%). Higher levels of maternal heterosis were exhibited for milk production (8.2 to 11.1%) and the negative, but nonsignificant, estimate of maternal heterosis for early minus late milk production suggested more persistent lactation for crossbred cows. Maternal heterosis was 11.5% for proportion of dams that calved and 10.4% for proportion of dams that weaned calves. Calf weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding, a characteristic combining calf growth and dam reproduction, exhibited 17.9% maternal heterosis.

Performance of crosses among Hereford, Angus, and Simmental cattle with different levels of Simmental breeding: VI. Maternal heterosis of 3- to 8-year-old dams and the dominance model.

Angus (A), Brown Swiss (S) and A X S reciprocal F1 (AS) dams were mated to A, S and AS (also reciprocal F1) sires resulting in nine breed groups of progeny with varying proportions of Angus and Brown Swiss breeding. Breed group of dam and of sire significantly influenced birth weight, preweaning daily gain, weaning weight, 205-d weight, condition score and frame size. The means for birth weight and weaning weight were 33 and 213 kg, respectively. Brown Swiss bulls sired calves with the heaviest birth and weaning weights. Calves produced by S dams likewise were heavier at birth and weaning. Pregnancy rates were influenced significantly by year, age and breed of dam and averaged 79, 95 and 92% for S, AS and A cows, respectively. Survival rate averaged 97% and was not influenced significantly by any of the effects examined. Because survival rates were similar for all breed groups, the results for weaning rate paralleled those for pregnancy rate. Genetic influences on preweaning growth traits and survival rate were partitioned into additive breed differences (B) and heterosis (H) effects for direct (d) and maternal (m) components. Pregnancy and weaning rates were examined using similar analyses except that genotype of service sire of dam replaced that of the offspring for the direct additive breed and direct heterosis components. The Bd values indicated that the Angus breed was inferior (P less than .01) to the Brown Swiss breed for all preweaning growth traits except for condition score, in which the Angus breed surpassed (P less than .01) the Brown Swiss. The Bm values also showed an advantage for the Brown Swiss breed for all preweaning growth traits. The additive maternal effect (the genotype of the females exposed), Bm, was important for pregnancy rate and weaning rate (P less than .001 and P less than .05) but not for survival rate (P greater than .10). The direct additive breed effect was not important for any reproductive trait. Direct heterosis did not affect any of the preweaning or reproduction traits; however, maternal heterosis (Hm) significantly affected all traits except birth weight, frame score and survival rate. The Hm estimates were 12.0 and 8.4 kg for weaning weight and 205-d weight, respectively. The Hm estimates for pregnancy rate, survival rate and weaning rate were 10, 2 and 13%, respectively.

Additive and heterosis effects on preweaning traits, maternal ability and reproduction from crossing of the Angus and brown Swiss breeds in Florida.

In radiotherapy , accurate dose determination and precise dose delivery to the tumor are directly associated with better treatment outcomes, such as better tumor control and lower post treatment complications. Challenges in Quality Assurance (QA) are a.o. (1) the varying amounts of primary and secondary scattered photons, the varying gantry angles and the energy heterogeneity and (2) the small field sizes used in Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT). As alternative to the commonly used GafChromic™ EBT films, radiophotoluminescence (RPL) films gained attention for high resolution 2D dosimetry in radiotherapy thanks to their insensitivity to ambient light, reusability, absence of fading and the few image corrections needed. In this work we characterize the response of improved Al 2 O 3 :C,Mg RPL films in a clinical 6 MV beam. Film response was evaluated in terms of uniformity, dose response, minimum detectable dose (MDD), small field dosimetry and its performance was evaluated for multileaf collimator (MLC) QA tests. The new films showed linear dose response up to 8 Gy, followed by supralinear response for higher doses up to 24 % at 20 Gy. QA checks for the MLC, including the chair and the alternating leaves, were compared with calculations from the treatment planning system (TPS) and showed an agreement within 5% for alternating leaves and a deviation in Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) below 1.5 % for the chair test. The maximum FWHM discrepancy between RPL film results and reference data (diode) for small field sizes (30 × 30, 20 × 20, 10 × 10, 8 × 8, 6 × 6 mm 2 ) was 1.9 %. Notwithstanding the variations in dose response, the studied films exhibit overall good agreement with reference data and demonstrate potential for QA in IMRT and small field radiotherapy
