"This article aims to contribute to an understanding of contemporary American attitudes toward immigration.... The paper uses data from a CBS News/New York Times poll conducted in June 1993. Respondents were asked whether they would like to see the level of immigration to the United States increased, decreased or kept the same. We test several hypotheses about factors influencing respondents' attitudes, including the importance of previously unexamined predictors. These new hypotheses relate to views about the health of the U.S. economy, feelings of social and political alienation, and isolationist sentiments concerning international economic issues and foreign relations. One important discovery is the close connection between possessing restrictionist immigration attitudes and having an isolationist perspective along a broader array of international issues."

Contemporary American attitudes toward U.S. immigration.

This report partly replicates and also extends previous work exploring social factors influencing public opinion concerning immigration policy in the United States. Our findings are that college education and perceived cultural threats, especially to the English language, have the most impact upon immigration views. Other variables having some effect are political ideology, economic outlook, age, and sex. Effects of race, income, and fear of crime appear to be negligible. The findings are discussed in light of a multifactor theory of immigration opinion.

Social factors influencing immigration attitudes: an analysis of data from the General Social Survey

This article uses data from the Citizen Participation Study – a large-scale survey of the voluntary activity of the American public designed to oversample African-Americans and Latinos as well as political activists – to inquire about the extent and sources of differences in levels of political activity among African-Americans, Latinos and Anglo-Whites. Considering a variety of political acts, we find that, in the aggregate, African-Americans are slightly, and Latinos are substantially, less active than Anglo-Whites. However, the resources that facilitate participation – some of which, for example, education, are related to social class and others of which, for example, religious preference and activity are associated with race or ethnicity – are distributed very unevenly across the three groups, with Latinos at a particular disadvantage. After accounting for differences in politically relevant resources, there is no significant difference among the three groups in political participation.

White Backlash: Immigration, Race, and American Politics

Socioeconomic theories have long been the cornerstone of political participation studies. However, these theories are incomplete and particularly unsuited to explaining behavior found within immigrant minority communities. While increases in age and education provide skills that ease political participation, if these variables do not concurrently socialize an individual to stronger beliefs about the efficacy of voting and democratic ideals, they will not result in the expected higher participation levels. Prior studies oversimplify the effects of socioeconomic status on political participation. Here, evidence is presented that socioeconomic status variables merely provide the skills necessary for political activity in a suitable political context. Socialization determines how these skills will be manifested.

sample's overwhelming support for President Mondale, any predictions made by those brave enough to venture a guess were taken with the appropriate grains of salt. On reflection, perhaps these results should have been released much earlier, if only to save the nation a lot of time and money. Respondents selected George Bush and Michael Dukakis as their respective party nominees. While Bush was mentioned most frequently for the Republican nomination (for a 49% plurality), members of the Legislative Studies Section actually sided with Robert Dole over the former vice president by a slim margin. Dukakis, meanwhile, won a plurality of votes (32%) among nine Democrats mentioned, followed not all that closely by Mario Cuomo, apparently despite his protestations to noncandidacy. When all was said and done, respondents tagged George Bush as the eventual winner, with Dole mentioned next most frequently as the probable 41st president. Dukakis came in a distant third. So much for all that talk about a repeat of the election of 1960.

Studying Latino Politics: The Development of the Latino National Political Survey

This study surveyed political values, attitudes, and behavior of Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans in the United States. This report describes U.S. Latinos as foreign-born, native (U.S.)-born, non-U.S. citizens, and U.S. citizens. The study used a household, in-person survey, in English or Spanish (interviewee's choice), of 1,546 Mexicans, 589 Puerto Ricans, 682 Cubans, and 598 non-Latinos. The survey was conducted between August 1989 and April 1990. Findings indicate that: (1) the U.S.-born have significantly higher levels of education, income, and job status than the foreign-born; (2) only the foreign -brrn speak mostly Spanish; (3) it is difficult to place any subgroup at any one point on the political spectrum; (4) ideologically, U.S. Latinos identify themselves as moderates or conservatives, although they support increased spending on many domestic issues; (5) Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans express strong commitment to and identification with their own national-origin groups, although the three together do not identify as one community or see themselves as similar culturally or politically; (6) despite widespread perceptions among Anglo political leaders, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans are generally well-incorporated into U.S. society; and (7) all U.S. Latinos are much more involved in general political activities and school-related activities than in voting.
