Health and community design: the impact of the built environment on physical activity

Speculative Everything: Design, Fiction, and Social Dreaming

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics are likely to have a significant long-term impact on higher education (HE). The scope of this impact is hard to grasp partly because the literature is siloed, as well as the changing meaning of the concepts themselves. But developments are surrounded by controversies in terms of what is technically possible, what is practical to implement and what is desirable, pedagogically or for the good of society. Design fictions that vividly imagine future scenarios of AI or robotics in use offer a means both to explain and query the technological possibilities. The paper describes the use of a wide-ranging narrative literature review to develop eight such design fictions that capture the range of potential use of AI and robots in learning, administration and research. They prompt wider discussion by instantiating such issues as how they might enable teaching of high order skills or change staff roles, as well as exploring the impact on human agency and the nature of datafication.

Exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence and robots on higher education through literature-based design fictions

This paper presents a design-led qualitative study investigating the (mis)use of digital technologies as tools for stalking, threats, and harassment within the context of intimate partner abuse (IPA). Results from interviews and domestic abuse forum data are reported on and set the foundation for a series of codesign workshops. The workshops invite participants to creatively anticipate smart home attack vectors, based on their lived experiences of IPA. Three workshops with seven IPA survivors and eleven professional support workers are detailed in this paper. Findings are organised into three phases through which survivors' privacy and security needs can be understood: 1) initial purchasing and configuring of smart home devices; 2) daily usage and; 3) (re-)securing devices after abuse has been identified. The speculative attack-vectors and design ideas generated by participants expose, for the first time, survivors' understanding of smart home security and privacy, as well as their needs, concerns, and requirements.

Anticipating Smart Home Security and Privacy Threats with Survivors of Intimate Partner Abuse

This paper explores how a design fiction can be designed to be used as a pragmatic user-centred design method to generate insights on future technology use. We built HawkEye, a design fiction probe that embodies a future fiction of dementia care. To learn how participants respond to the probe, we employed it with eight participants for three weeks in their own homes as well as evaluating it with six HCI experts in sessions of 1.5h. In addition to presenting the probe in detail, we share insights into the process of building it and discuss the utility of design fiction as a tool to elicit empathetic and rich discussions about potential outcomes of future technologies.

ProtoPolicy design report : using design fiction to negotiate political questions

The benefits provided by health-related technologies are often counterbalanced by the societal, legal and ethical challenges connected with the pervasive monitoring of people, as necessitated by such technological interventions. Through the ProtoPolicy research project we explored the co-creation and use of design fictions as a tool for open debate of pervasive health systems. Design fictions were co-created and tested in a series of design workshops with community groups in the UK. A thematic analysis of a debate among older people on a smart home and assisted living design fiction highlighted societal and ethical issues relevant to personal and pervasive health system design. We conclude that ethics, like ‘usability’, may be usefully based on engagement with directly or indirectly implicated publics and should not be designed into innovation by experts alone.

Using design fictions as a tool for engaging citizens in debating future pervasive health systems and services

Together we engaged in a project to co-design and co-create a fictional near-future world that would enable us to interrogate our present techno-social dilemmas.  Accessibility was central to our workshop for the way that access is always central to enacting crip, mad, Deaf, and spoonie[1] communities.  Without access, we cannot meet, discuss, share, struggle, fight, dismantle or create. Crucially, access was tied to our desire to co-create crip near-futures.
