The Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) 37 study on deep decarbonization and high electrification analyzed a set of scenarios that achieve economy-wide net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in North America by mid-century, exploring the implications of different technology evolutions, policies, and behavioral assumptions affecting energy supply and demand. For this paper, 16 modeling teams reported resulting emissions projections, energy system evolution, and economic activity. This paper provides an overview of the study, documents the scenario design, provides a roadmap for complementary forthcoming papers from this study, and offers an initial summary and comparison of results for net-zero CO2 by 2050 scenarios in the United States. We compare various outcomes across models and scenarios, such as emissions, energy use, fuel mix evolution, and technology adoption. Despite disparate model structure and sources for input assumptions, there is broad agreement in energy system trends across models towards deep decarbonization of the electricity sector coupled with increased end-use electrification of buildings, transportation, and to a lesser extent industry. All models deploy negative emissions technologies (e.g., direct air capture and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) in addition to land sinks to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions. Important differences emerged in the results, showing divergent pathways among end-use sectors with deep electrification and grid decarbonization as necessary but not sufficient conditions to achieve net zero. These differences will be explored in the papers complementing this study to inform efforts to reach net-zero emissions and future research needs.

As global concerns regarding climate change continue to increase, achieving carbon neutrality has emerged as a paramount objective for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting the adverse impacts of anthropogenic activities on the environment. This research investigates a wide range of scholarly works to conduct an in-depth analysis and synthesis of the relevant information about carbon neutrality strategies. The review introduces carbon neutrality principles and terminologies, highlighting their importance in climate mitigation. It then proceeds to explore the wide range of strategies employed across different sectors and industries, investigating their effectiveness, scalability, and potential challenges. A multidimensional analysis contrasts the United States Nationally Determined Contributions Pathway 2023, China's Nationally Determined Contributions 2023, and the EU Directive 2023/2413, assessing their economic, environmental, political, and social impacts. The study evaluates strategies' effectiveness, scalability, and innovation for transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon future. It fills a gap by analyzing global approaches across the US, China, and the EU, which account for about 50% of the world's total GHG emissions. It evaluates the novel application of diverse strategies, from renewable energy transitions to innovative policy measures, highlighting their potential to mitigate climate change effectively. By providing a multidimensional analysis of these strategies' impacts, the research not only enhances understanding of effective carbon neutrality tactics but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in realizing a sustainable, low-carbon future. 

Global Strategies for a Low-Carbon Future: Lessons from the US, China, and EU's Pursuit of Carbon Neutrality

Recently, hydrogen application has been a new and promising technology in gas turbines, paving the way towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. However, challenges and considerations accompany this technology due to hydrogen's combustion characteristics compared to traditional fossil fuels. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in hydrogen-fueled gas turbines, focusing on their impacts on gas turbines, economic evaluation, and the development of commercial hydrogen gas turbines. Our analysis demonstrated that the unique combustion characteristics of hydrogen will influence combustion stability, flame dynamics, and the overall combustion process in gas turbines. The challenges associated with commercial hydrogen gas turbines encompass the high cost of hydrogen production, effective and efficient hydrogen combustion, material compatibility, and the imperative need for supportive regulatory measures.

Analysing the adoption barriers of low-carbon operations: A step forward for achieving net-zero emissions

This paper presents a review of the power and torque coefficients of various wind generation systems, which involve the real characteristics of the wind turbine as a function of the generated power. The coefficients are described by mathematical functions that depend on the trip speed ratio and blade pitch angle of the wind turbines. These mathematical functions are based on polynomial, sinusoidal, and exponential equations. Once the mathematical functions have been described, an analysis of the grouped coefficients according to their function is performed with the purpose of considering the variations in the trip speed ratio for all the coefficients based on sinusoidal and exponential functions, and with the variations in the blade pitch angle. This analysis allows us to determine the different coefficients of power and torque used in wind generation systems, with the objective of developing algorithms for searching for the point of maximum power generated and for the active control of wind turbines with variations in the blade pitch angle.

Comparison of Power Coefficients in Wind Turbines Considering the Tip Speed Ratio and Blade Pitch Angle

The United States has pledged to develop a 100% carbon-free electric power system by 2035 and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050. While important advancements have been made in the scale, performance, and economics of clean energy technologies, meeting the nation's ambitious goals will not only require their deployment at scale, but also additional innovation and effective integration of different solutions. Technological developments across the broad suite of low-carbon energy solutions are advancing rapidly, with ongoing innovations in renewable electricity generation, industrial processes, and energy-saving technologies and services, including LED lighting, induction heating, electric vehicles, energy storage solutions, and mobility as a service, plus smart devices, controls, and more efficient and smart buildings. Combining renewable electricity with biotic and abiotic pathways to produce chemicals, fuels, and materials promises to deliver new solutions. Grid-interactive buildings and communities, integrating transportation infrastructure and vehicles, are likely to be significant components of any zero-carbon energy strategy. Low-carbon industrial manufacturing will also make strong contributions to a net-zero economy. While the technical prospects appear promising, variations in the state of infrastructure, jurisdictional and social equity, pollution, economic and socio-cultural constraints, energy resource availability, and supply chain dynamics found in different locations present a range of challenges and demand customized solutions. This paper provides a critical review and offers new insights into the technical, infrastructure, analytic, political, and economic challenges faced in translating the nation's ambitious net-zero-emissions goals into feasible and reliable implementation action plans. 

Challenges and opportunities in decarbonizing the U.S. energy system

RT-SEISMIC electronics design into a commercially available, high temperature silicon-on-insulator chip integrated circuit. Several issues were identified during fabrication and lab testing that led to redesign of several system components and subsequent retesting. The final round of testing showed that while metal/graphite-based seals worked quite well for static seals, they were unable to provide an adequate gas seal for dynamic, reciprocating part movements which necessitated a final redesign using Kalrez. This change will result in a continuous temperature rating of approximately 275 degrees C for the system. While a field test of the RT-SEISMIC system was targeted in FY22, due to the extended lab testing and redesign efforts, field testing was not achieved. As a result of this LDRD investment, several sponsors have expressed interest in RT-SEISMIC and we expect to continue towards a field demonstration of the full system in the future.
