Caloric restriction stabilizes body weight and accelerates behavioral recovery in aged rats after focal ischemia.
Ovidiu Ciobanu,Raluca Elena Sandu,Adrian Tudor Balseanu,Alexandra Daniela Zavaleanu,Andrei Gresita,Eugen Bogdan Petcu,Adriana Uzoni,Aurel Popa-Wagner +7 more
TL;DR: Recovery from stroke is enhanced in aged rats by a dietary regimen that reduces body weight prior to infarct, and calorie‐restricted aged animals showed improved behavioral recovery in tasks requiring complex sensorimotor skills, or in task requiring cutaneous sensitivity and sensorsimotor integration or spatial memory.

Ageing as a risk factor for cerebral ischemia: Underlying mechanisms and therapy in animal models and in the clinic.
Aurel Popa-Wagner,Aurel Popa-Wagner,Eugen Bogdan Petcu,Bogdan Capitanescu,Dirk M. Hermann,Eugen Radu,Andrei Gresita +6 more
TL;DR: In this review, parallels between animal models of stroke und clinical data are made and the impact of ageing and age-related comorbidities on stroke outcome is summarized.

Intracortical Administration of the Complement C3 Receptor Antagonist Trifluoroacetate Modulates Microglia Reaction after Brain Injury.
Roxana Surugiu,Bogdan Catalin,Danut Dumbrava,Andrei Gresita,Denisa Greta Olaru,Dirk M. Hermann,Aurel Popa-Wagner,Aurel Popa-Wagner +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the C3aR antagonist, SB 290157, may be used in the future to limit the neuronal death by limiting secondary phagocytosis after stroke.
Genetic conversion of proliferative astroglia into neurons after cerebral ischemia: a new therapeutic tool for the aged brain?
Aurel Popa-Wagner,Dirk M. Hermann,Andrei Gresita +2 more
- 12 Jul 2019
TL;DR: This paper presents a new approach to circumvent cell transplantation for stroke therapy and reveals the potential of this new methodology to improve restoration of structure and function in the hostile environment caused by the fulminant inflammatory reaction in the brains of aged animals.

Nanodrugs for the Treatment of Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review
M. Ruscu,Andreea-Mihaela Cercel,Ertugrul Kilic,Bogdan Catalin,Andrei Gresita,Dirk M. Hermann,Carmen Valeria Albu,Aurel Popa-Wagner +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors evaluated the efficacy of nanomedicines in animal models of stroke and their potential impact on future stroke therapies and assessed the scientific quality of current research focused on nanoparticle-based treatments for ischemic stroke.
