Sancho,Dirk Schulze-Makuch,Laura Selbmann,Paloma Serrano,Ulrich Szewzyk,Cyprien Verseux,Jennifer Wadsworth,Dirk Wagner,Frances Westall,David Wolter,Laura Zucconi +56 more
TL;DR: The presented BIOMEX concept could be scaled up to future exposure experiments on the Moon and will serve as a pretest in low Earth orbit.
Adaptation of an Antarctic lichen to Martian niche conditions can occur within 34 days
Jean-Pierre de Vera,Dirk Schulze-Makuch,A. Khan,Andreas Lorek,Alexander Koncz,Diedrich Möhlmann,Tilman Spohn +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors simulated conditions of the unprotected Martian surface (i.e. 6344kJm−2) and protected niche conditions (269kJ m−2), and found that the entire lichen not only survived and remained photosynthetically active, but also adapted physiologically by increasing its photosynthetic activity over 34 days.

Supercooled interfacial water in fine grained soils probed by dielectric spectroscopy
Andreas Lorek,Norbert Wagner +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a parallel plate capacitor has been developed to obtain isothermal dielectric spectra of fine-grained soils in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 1.1 MHz at Martian-like temperatures down to −70 °C.
Humidity Measurement in Carbon Dioxide with Capacitive Humidity Sensors at Low Temperature and Pressure.
Andreas Lorek,Jacek Majewski +1 more
TL;DR: Capacitive humidity sensors (Sensirion SHT75) were tested at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in its Martian Simulation Facility (MSF) and showed a strong cross-sensitivity of the sensors to CO2 and, compared with air, a strong pressure sensitivity as well.

Simulation and Measurement of Extraterrestrial Conditions for Experiments on Habitability with Respect to Mars
Andreas Lorek,Alexander Koncz +1 more
- 01 Jan 2013
TL;DR: The Mars Simulation Facility (MSF) as mentioned in this paper has been designed to simulate Martian environmental conditions in terms of pressure (1,060 hPa), temperature (−70 to +130 °C), humidity (−46 °C frost point (FP) to −101 °C FP at 7 hPa, light (150 W Xenon lamp emitting in the range of 250 −2,190 nm with calibrated intensity), and gas composition (up to five constituents).
