Thermal wave radar imaging (TWRI) was developed to detect manufacturing cracks in automotive powder metallurgy components (transmission sprockets) in their green (unsintered) state. The crack detection capability of the TWRI phase was validated by two sets of cracked/crack-free green and sintered sprockets which were sectioned after TWRI measurements. An automatic defect recognition (ADR) TWR image processing method was also developed to differentiate cracks from local defects. Measurement results demonstrated that TWRI is superior to conventional lock-in thermography imaging (LITI) in both flaw detection resolution and speed, and thus is a viable green-sprocket manufacturing flaw imaging technology.

Provided is a barrier adhesive composition comprises polyisobutylene resin, organically modified nanoclay (e.g. montmorillonite or bentonite) and sorbent nanoparticles (e.g. CaO which acts as a desiccant and/or getter). In a preferred embodiment, the barrier adhesive composition is disposed on a gas-barrier film to form an adhesive barrier film. The adhesive barrier film can then be used for protection from oxygen and moisture in OLED displays and solid state lightings, solar cells, electrophoretic and electrochromic displays, thin film batteries, quantum dot devices, sensors (e.g. touch sensor) and other organic electronic devices. The adhesive barrier film is especially well-suited for applications that require oxygen and moisture protection as well flexibility and good optical transmittance.

Problem statement: Many NDT systems used for damage detection in composites are difficult to apply to complex geometric structures, also, they are time-consuming. As a solution to the problems associated with NDT applications, an intelligent analysis system that supports a portable testing environment, which allowed various types of inputs and provided sufficient data regarding level of damage in a tested structure was designed and tested. The developed technique was a novel approach that allowed locating defects with good accuracy. Approach: This research presented a novel approach to fast NDT using intelligent image analysis through a specifically developed algorithm that checks the integrity of composite structures. Such a novel approach allowed not only to determine the level of damage, but also, to correlate damage detected by one imaging technique using available instruments and methods to results that would be obtained using other instruments and techniques. Results: Using the developed ICA algorithm, accurate classification was achieved using C-Scan and Low Temperature Thermal imaging (LTT). Both techniques agreed on damage classification and structural integrity. Conclusion: This very successful approach to damage detection and classification is further supported by its ability to correlate different NDT technologies and predict others.

The successful use of adhesively bonded parts depends on the defect-free bond of the components. Therefore it is necessary to detect relevant faults and defects in an early state of the production. A 100% test should be pursued, but especially at complicated structures the detection of defects is not easy. Possible testing methods, which show a high potential for the NDT of adhesively bonded parts, are thermography based NDT methods. At present mainly two different procedures of active thermography are being used: Pulse and Lock-In Thermography. With pulse thermography the examined material is warmed up with a short energy pulse (light, eddy current or ultrasonic pulse) and the heat response is recorded after a certain time. The result is an infrared image which indicates material defects in different depths. This paper presents a variety of images showing the capability of Lock-In Thermography to image subsurface defects. Several examples of adhesives joints qualify the ultrasonic Lock-In-Thermography for the in-process quality control for adhesive bonded components.
