A Good Practices Guide for Digital Image Correlation

3D imaging has become popular for analyzing material microstructures. When time lapse series of 3D pictures are acquired during a single experiment, it is possible to measure displacement fields via digital volume correlation (DVC), thereby leading to 4D results. Such 4D analyses have been performed for almost two decades. The present paper aims at reviewing the achievements of and challenges faced by such measurement technique. Ex-situ and in-situ experiments are discussed. A general and unified DVC framework is introduced. Various sources of measurement bias and uncertainties are analyzed. The current challenges are studied and some propositions are given to address them.

Digital Volume Correlation: Review of Progress and Challenges

The grid method is a technique suitable for the measurement of in-plane displacement and strain components on specimens undergoing a small deformation. It relies on a regular marking of the surfaces under investigation. Various techniques are proposed in the literature to retrieve these sought quantities from images of regular markings, but recent advances show that techniques developed initially to process fringe patterns lead to the best results. The grid method features a good compromise between measurement resolution and spatial resolution, thus making it an efficient tool to characterise strain gradients. Another advantage of this technique is the ability to establish closed-form expressions between its main metrological characteristics, thus enabling to predict them within certain limits. In this context, the objective of this paper is to give the state of the art in the grid method, the information being currently spread out in the literature. We propose first to recall various techniques that were used in the past to process grid images, to focus progressively on the one that is the most used in recent examples: the windowed Fourier transform. From a practical point of view, surfaces under investigation must be marked with grids, so the techniques available to mark specimens with grids are presented. Then we gather the information available in the recent literature to synthesise the connection between three important characteristics of full-field measurement techniques: the spatial resolution, the measurement resolution and the measurement bias. Some practical information is then offered to help the readers who discover this technique to start using it. In particular, programmes used here to process the grid images are offered to the readers on a dedicated website. We finally present some recent examples available in the literature to highlight the effectiveness of the grid method for in-plane displacement and strain measurement in real situations.

The Grid Method for In‐plane Displacement and Strain Measurement: A Review and Analysis

DIC-based identification of the constitutive parameters of an elastoplastic law is addressed both from a general viewpoint, and applied to the particular case of dog-bone sample made of commercially pure titanium and subjected to tensile loading. A two-step procedure (Digital Image Correlation — DIC — followed by weighted Finite Element Method Updating — FEMU) is first presented. These two steps can be merged into a single-step procedure (i.e., Integrated-DIC or I-DIC). In both cases, the elastoplastic computations are performed with a commercial code (i.e., non-intrusive identification). When the suited weighting of FEMU is taken into account, which is based on DIC-processed image noise, both I-DIC and FEMU methods provide similar results. It is shown that the addressed experimental case requires the use of static (load) information to get precise estimates of the sought parameters.

For laser direct-drive (LDD) fusion implosions, intense laser beams are used to directly illuminate the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) capsule. The laser beams' intensity nonuniformity (due to speckles) on the target can impose perturbation seeds which are subsequently amplified by Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth, thereby leading to degradation of ICF implosion performance. To devise methods to mitigate this issue, adequate understanding of the underlying so-called laser-imprinting process is required. Here, we report measurements and modeling of the initial plasma formation process which has been shown to affect the laser imprint. Specifically, we measured the transient transmission of a femtosecond probe pulse through a polystyrene target for different 100-picosecond pump pulse intensities pertaining to ICF conditions. The experimental data are used to benchmark a microphysics model of initial plasma formation that overall describes the observed dynamics, thus providing a validated solid-to-plasma modeling for laser-imprinting purposes in radiation-hydrodynamic codes to accurately simulate and design LDD targets.
