Book review: Applied cryptography: Protocols, algorithms, and source code in C

Analyzing cryptographic implementations has important applications, especially for malware analysis where they are an integral part both of the malware payload and the unpacking code that decrypts this payload. These implementations are often based on well-known cryptographic functions, whose description is publicly available. While potentially very useful for malware analysis, the identification of such cryptographic primitives is made difficult by the fact that they are usually obfuscated. Current state-of-the-art identification tools are ineffective due to the absence of easily identifiable static features in obfuscated code. However, these implementations still maintain the input-output (I/O) relationship of the original function. In this paper, we present a tool that leverages this fact to identify cryptographic functions in obfuscated programs, by retrieving their I/O parameters in an implementation-independent fashion, and comparing them with those of known cryptographic functions. In experimental evaluation, we successfully identified the cryptographic functions TEA, RC4, AES and MD5 both in synthetic examples protected by a commercial-grade packer (AsProtect), and in several obfuscated malware samples (Sality, Waledac, Storm Worm and SilentBanker). In addition, our tool was able to recognize basic operations done in asymmetric ciphers such as RSA.

Aligot: cryptographic function identification in obfuscated binary programs

Cold boot attacks exploit the fact that memory contents fade with time and that most of them can be retrieved after a short power-down (reboot). These attacks aim at retrieving encryption keys from memory to thwart disk drive encryption. We present a method to implement disk drive encryption that is resistant to cold boot attacks. More specifically, we implemented AES and integrated it into the Linux kernel in such a way that neither the secret key nor any parts of it leave the processor. To achieve this, we used the SSE (streaming SIMD extensions) available in modern Intel processors in a non-standard way. We show that the performance penalty is acceptable and present a brief security analysis of the system.

AESSE: a cold-boot resistant implementation of AES

We uncover a new class of attacks that can potentially affect any cryptographic protocol. The attack is performed by an adversary that at some point has access to the physical memory of a participant, including all its previous states. In order to protect protocols from such attacks, we introduce a cryptographic primitive that we call erasable memory. Using this primitive, it is possible to implement the essential cryptographic action of forgetting a secret. We show how to use a small erasable memory in order to transform a large non-erasable memory into a large and erasable memory. In practice, this shows how to turn any type of storage device into a storage device that can selectively forget. Moreover, the transformation can be performed using the minimal assumption of the existence of any one-way function, and can be implemented using any block cipher, in which case it is quite efficient. We conclude by suggesting some concrete implementations of small amounts of erasable memory.

How to forget a secret

Memory was captured from a system infected by ransomware and its contents was examined using live forensic tools, with the intent of identifying the symmetric encryption keys being used. NotPetya, Bad Rabbit and Phobos hybrid ransomware samples were tested during the investigation. If keys were discovered, the following two steps were also performed. Firstly, a timeline was manually created by combining data from multiple sources to illustrate the ransomware's behaviour as well as showing when the encryption keys were present in memory and how long they remained there. Secondly, an attempt was made to decrypt the files encrypted by the ransomware using the found keys. In all cases, the investigation was able to confirm that it was possible to identify the encryption keys used. A description of how these found keys were then used to successfully decrypt files that had been encrypted during the execution of the ransomware is also given. The resulting generated timelines provided a excellent way to visualise the behaviour of the ransomware and the encryption key management practices it employed, and from a forensic investigation and possible mitigation point of view, when the encryption keys are in memory.
