Optical systems that provide for simultaneous images and spectra from an object, such as a tissue sample, an industrial object such as a computer chip, or any other object that can be viewed with an optical system such as a microscope, endoscope, telescope or camera. In some embodiments, the systems provide multiple images corresponding to various desired wavelength ranges within an original image of the object, as well as, if desired, directional pointer(s) that can provide both an identification of the precise location from which a spectrum is being obtained, as well as enhancing the ability to point the device.

A system, method and apparatus for eliminating image tearing effects and other visual artifacts perceived when scanning moving subject matter with a scanned beam imaging device. The system, method and apparatus uses a motion detection means in conjunction with an image processor to alter the native image to one without image tearing or other visual artifacts. The image processor monitors the motion detection means and reduces the image resolution or translates portions of the imaged subject matter in response to the detected motion.

Sbi motion artifact removal apparatus and method

An apparatus and method for allowing multiple high and low resolution SBI and conventional FPA imaging devices to use a common high resolution monitor and archive device without increasing or significantly changing the footprint of existing devices. This system and method uses a frame grabber for digitizing video from the legacy FPA devices, a frame mapper for rendering or mapping the FPA video into the SBI digital format, a converter for rasterizing SBI data streams into pixel-oriented FPA video frames, an input selector for selecting which FPA or SBI imaging device to display on a high resolution monitor, an processor for storing and manipulating frames of video, a video output encoder for converting the SBI frames into a video signal appropriate for display on the high resolution monitor, and an output means for connecting to a storage device for archiving video and images.

Combined SBI and conventional image processor

The present invention comprises an optical apparatus, methods and uses for real-time (video-rate) multimodal imaging, for example, contemporaneous measurement of white light reflectance, native tissue autofluorescence and near infrared images with an endoscope. These principles may be applied to various optical apparati such as microscopes, endoscopes, telescopes, cameras etc. to view or analyze the interaction of light with objects such as planets, plants, rocks, animals, cells, tissue, proteins, DNA, semiconductors, etc. Multi-band spectral images may provide morphological data such as surface structure of lung tissue whereas chemical make-up, sub-structure and other object characteristics may be deduced from spectral signals related to reflectance or light radiated (emitted) from the object such as luminescence or fluorescence, indicating endogenous chemicals or exogenous substances such as dyes employed to enhance visualization, drugs, therapeutics or other agents. Accordingly, one embodiment of the present invention discusses simultaneous white light reflectance and fluorescence imaging. Another embodiment describes the addition of another reflectance imaging modality (in the near-IR spectrum). Input (illumination) spectrum, optical modulation, optical processing, object interaction, output spectrum, detector configurations, synchronization, image processing and display are discussed for various applications.

Real-time contemporaneous multimodal imaging and spectroscopy uses thereof

Photoacoustic tomography (PAT), a promising medical imaging method that combines optical and ultrasound techniques, has been developing for decades mostly in preclinical application. A recent trend is to utilize the economical laser source to develop a low-cost sensing and imaging system, which aims at an affordable solution in clinical application. These low-cost laser sources have different modulation modes such as pulsed modulation, continuous modulation and coded modulation to generate different profiles of PA signals in photoacoustic (PA) imaging. In this paper, we review the recent development of the photoacoustic sensing and imaging based on the economical laser sources such as laser diode (LD) and light-emitting diode (LED) in different kinds of modulation types, and discuss several representative methods to improve the performance of such imaging systems based on low-cost laser sources. Finally, some perspectives regarding the future development of portable PAT systems are discussed, followed by the conclusion.

Review of Low-Cost Photoacoustic Sensing and Imaging Based on Laser Diode and Light-Emitting Diode.

A method of and a device for the endoscopic fluorescence diagnosis of tissue, wherein the tissue is exposed to stimulating light via an endoscope for stimulation of fluorescence, which stimulating light is suitable, on account of its spectral distribution, to stimulate at least two different fluorescence modes in the tissue without filter switching in the stimulation beam path, and wherein the fluorescence light of the different fluorescence modes can be selectively observed.

Method of and devices for fluorescence diagnosis of tissue, particularly by endoscopy

An endoscopic or microscopic apparatus for diagnosis by means of a light-induced reaction in biologic tissue “in vivo” which is created by a photo-amboceptor or by autofluorescence is provided. The inventive apparatus is characterized by the feature that at least one reference wavelength λ r is provided which is longer by up to 2Δλ at maximum or smaller than the wavelength λ s at the point of intersection.

Device for photodynamic diagnosis or treatment

A testing or setting device for a PDD or PDT system or for training on such a system, which includes a lighting system, is provided with a housing in which the PDD or PDT system can be at least partially accommodated. The device is characterized in that a tissue phantom is installed in the housing in such a way that the surface of the tissue phantom can be at least partially lit by the lighting system and observed by the observation system, and that the tissue phantom includes at least one luminescent area. A tissue phantom, appropriate for use in the invention's device, has at least one luminescent area and is characterized by the fact that it has at least one additional area, whose luminescent characteristics differ from those of the first luminescent area.

Testing or setting device for a PDD or PDT system, or for training on such a system and tissue phantom

Background:
High brightness light emitting diodes (LEDs) have become available that appear suitable to replace light sources
currently used for illumination through thin light guides, e.g. in endoscopy. We investigated the essential characteristics
of a series of commercial single LEDs relevant for direct coupling to a single optical multimode fiber.
Methods:
LED fiber coupling efficiency was assessed experimentally and theoretically by using a ray tracing software.
Results:
Surface emitting LEDs proved suitable to be coupled directly into plastic optical fibers (POFs). We have successfully
applied a 1 mm core POF-fiber (outer diameter 1.01 mm) in contact with a OSTAR LED (Osram Opto Semiconductors,
Regensburg, Germany) to achieve a coupling efficiency of 10-20%, which gave 42 mW, 23.7 mW and 27 mW for blue,
green and red LED respectively.
Ray tracing simulation revealed a considerable part of photons travelling "out of axis" in spirals along the core-clad
interface (non-meridional beams). They account for approximately 30% of the transmitted power.

Transmission of LED-light through optical fibers for optical tissue diagnostics

The invention relates to a method and a device for endoscopically performing fluorescence diagnosis of tissues. According to the inventive method, tissue is exposed to an energising light used to provide energy for fluorescence by means of an endoscope. Said light can provide energy for at least two fluorescence modes in the tissue due to its spectral distribution without requiring a change of filters in the path of the energising light. According to the invention, the fluorescent light of the different fluorescence modes can be selectively observed.
