Nutrient loading to coastal bay ecosystems is of a similar magnitude as that to deeper, river-fed estuar- ies, yet our understanding of the eutrophication process in these shallow systems lags far behind. In this synthesis, we focus on one type of biotic feedback that influences eu- trophication patterns in coastal bays—the important role of primary producers in the 'coastal filter'. We discuss the 2 aspects of plant-mediated nutrient cycling as eutrophica- tion induces a shift in primary producer dominance: (1) the fate of nutrients bound in plant biomass, and (2) the effects of primary producers on biogeochemical processes that in- fluence nutrient retention. We suggest the following gen- eralizations as eutrophication proceeds in coastal bays: (1) Long-term retention of recalcitrant dissolved and particu- late organic matter will decline as seagrasses are replaced by algae with less refractory material. (2) Benthic grazers buffer the early effects of nutrient enrichment, but con- sumption rates will decline as physico-chemical conditions stress consumer populations. (3) Mass transport of plant- bound nutrients will increase because attached perennial macrophytes will be replaced by unattached ephemeral algae that move with the water. (4) Denitrification will be an unimportant sink for N because primary producers typically outcompete bacteria for available N, and parti- tioning of nitrate reduction will shift to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium in later stages of eutrophication. In tropical/subtropical systems dominated by carbonate sediments, eutrophication will likely result in a positive feedback where increased sulfate reduction and sulfide accumulation in sediments will decrease P adsorption to Fe and enhance the release of P to the overlying water.

Eutrophication in shallow coastal bays and lagoons: the role of plants in the coastal filter

A reduction in dissolved oxygen concentration is one of the most important direct effects of nutrient over-enrichment of coastal waters on fishes. Because hypoxia can cause mortality, reduced growth rates, and altered distributions and behaviors of fishes, as well as changes in the relative importance of organisms and pathways of carbon flow within food webs, hypoxia and anoxia can lead to large reductions in the abundance, diversity, and harvest of fishes within affected waters. Nutrient enrichment, however, typically increases prey abundance in more highly oxygenated surface waters and beyond the boundaries of the hypoxic zone. Because of this mosaic of high and low oxygen areas within a system, not only the actual oxygen concentration of bottom waters, but the spatial arrangement, predictability, and persistence of highly oxygenated, high productivity habitats, and the ability of fishes to locate and use those favorable habitats, will determine the ultimate effect of low oxygen on fish populations. Negative effects of hypoxia on fish, habitat, and food webs potentially make both fish populations and entire systems more susceptible to additional anthropogenic and natural stressors.

Risk assessment of the environmental impact of Norwegian Atlantic salmon farming

The paper gives an overview of some of the large, shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems (SECS) in Europe, These SECS are important both from the ecological and the economic perspective (socio-ecological systems) and provide many valuable ecosystem goods and services. Although some of the systems are transitional waters under the Water Framework Directive, this is not the case for all of the systems. The paper adopts a Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response approach to analyse the ecological status, vulnerability and future perspectives of these systems in the context of global change.

Distribution of green algal mats throughout shallow soft bottoms of the Swedish Skagerrak archipelago in relation to nutrient sources and wave exposure

Fast growing ephemeral algae are increasingly observed in shallow coastal waters worldwide. This is generally considered a symptom of coastal eutrophication. It has been suggested that the reoccurrence of macroalgal mats, despite ongoing efforts to decrease nutrient loadings, may be explained by the fact that sheltered bays function as self-regenerating systems through benthic regeneration of nutrients. The importance of benthic nutrient regeneration during the initiation of the growth of filamentous green algal mats was investigated in 2 shallow-water bays on the west coast of Sweden. Nutrient regeneration was assessed in situ and in the laboratory, using sediment-water light/dark incubations and pore water distribution patterns. Benthic efflux of inorganic nutrients could supply up to 55 to 100% of the estimated nitrogen demand and 30 to 70% of the phosphorus requirements for the initial macroalgal growth from May to June. However, the availability of the pore water nutrient pool was influenced by the amount and functional type of infauna, and by com- petition from microphytobenthos. Because of the internal nutrient source of the embayments, it is suggested that there may be a significant time lag between a decreased nutrient supply to coastal waters and improved conditions of shallow water embayments.

Importance of benthic nutrient regeneration during initiation of macroalgal blooms in shallow bays

Kusttralningar har genomforts langs svenska kusten i Vasterhavet sedan 2001. En huvudsaklig malsattning sedan starten har varit att overvaka utvecklingen av lokala bestand och kustkomponenter av bestand for ett urval av fiskarter med sarskild fokus pa torsk. Sedan 2009 ar provtagningen fokuserad till kustavsnittet med skargard mellan Fladen banken i soder och Singlefjorden i norr och sedan 2013 ar provtagningen anpassad for att aven overvaka fisksamhallets utveckling for Havsmiljodirektivet vad det galler biologisk mangfald och marina naringsvavar. 

Arets kusttralning genomfordes den 3-13 september 2018 da sammanlagt 32 tralstationer besoktes i norra Vasterhavet. I kustomraden gjordes 24 traldrag och i utsjon gjordes atta traldrag. 

Fangsterna av torsk langs kusten under 2018 lag i stort satt pa samma laga niva som foregaende ar. Forekomsten av stor konsmogen torsk langs kusten var fortsatt mycket lag; den storsta torsken som fangades i kustomradena under 2018 var 56 cm lang och fangades i Askerofjorden. Fangsterna av torsk i utsjon under 2018 indikerar i jamforelse med 2017 ars provtagning en fortsatt minskning. Fangsterna av torsk i utsjon 2018 var de lagsta som registrerats sedan provtagningen borjade. Vitling ar en av de vanligaste fiskarterna som fangas i kusttralningen under de senaste aren (2013-2018). De negativa trenderna for vitling bade i utsjon och i kustomradena fortsatte under 2018 pa samma satt som under 2017. Fangstnivaerna for kolja i kustomradena var pa en liknande niva som under 2017 ars kusttralning samtidigt som koljan i utsjon befann sig pa den lagsta niva som registrerats sedan kusttralningen startade. Generellt, vad det galler torskfiskar sa utgjordes fangsterna nastan uteslutande av juvenil fisk. Tva arter av rocka fangades – knaggrocka och klorocka. Totalt fangades 48 olika fiskarter.
