The nature and characteristics of the CH/π interaction are discussed by comparison with other weak molecular forces such as the CH/O and OH/π interaction. The CH/π interaction is a kind of hydrogen bond operating between a soft acid CH and a soft base π-system (double and triple bonds, C6 and C5 aromatic rings, heteroaromatics, convex surfaces of fullerenes and nanotubes). The consequences of CH/π hydrogen bonds in supramolecular chemistry are reviewed on grounds of recent crystallographic findings and database analyses. The topics include intramolecular interactions, crystal packing (organic and organometallic compounds), host/guest complexes (cavity-type inclusion compounds of cyclodextrins and synthetic macrocyclic hosts such as calixarenes, catenanes, rotaxanes and pseudorotaxanes), lattice-inclusion type clathrates (including liquid crystals, porphyrin derivatives, cyclopentadienyl compounds and C60 fullerenes), enantioselective clathrate formation, catalytic enantioface discriminating reactions and solid-state photoreaction. The implications of the CH/π concept for crystal engineering and drug design are evident.

Most associate liquid crystals with their everyday use in laptop computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, and other electronic devices. However, in contrast to their rodlike (calamitic) counterparts, first described in 1907 by Vorlander, disklike (discotic, columnar) liquid crystals, which were discovered in 1977 by Chandrasekhar et al., offer further applications as a result of their orientation in the columnar mesophase, making them ideal candidates for molecular wires in various optical and electronic devices such as photocopiers, laser printers, photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, and holographic data storage. Beginning with an overview of the various mesophases and characterization methods, this Review will focus on the major classes of columnar mesogens rather than presenting a library of columnar liquid crystals. Emphasis will be given to efficient synthetic procedures, and relevant mesomorphic and physical properties. Finally, some applications and perspectives in materials science and molecular electronics will be discussed.

Pyrazolate “Golden” Rings: Trinuclear Complexes That Form Columnar Mesophases at Room Temperature

Supramolecular liquid crystals containing the unprecedented 4-aryl-1H-pyrazole unit are reported. This moiety is able to self-assemble by H-bonding to give columnar mesophases and also display luminescent properties in the visible region. The molecular structures consist of a polyalkoxybenzamide group substituted at the nitrogen atom by the 4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)phenyl unit. A family of compounds was synthesized to evaluate the supramolecular structures and the mesomorphic properties. The 3,4,5-tri-n-decyloxybenzamide derivative is a non-discoid molecule that displays a hexagonal columnar mesophase and a rectangular columnar mesophase. Powder X-ray diffraction studies show that these molecules are able to self-assemble in columns, and that a columnar stratum of the hexagonal columnar mesophase contains five molecules on average. A model for the columnar organization is proposed in which a self-assembled aggregate is formed by an antiparallel arrangement of the molecules partially interdigitated and interacts by hydrogen bonds. The amide group was changed by an ester group, in order to asses the role of the amide and pyrazole groups in the self-assembly. The ester compound also exhibited a columnar mesophase with similar cell parameters. This means that, together with the tapered shape of the molecule, the 1H-pyrazole moiety, and not the amide group, is essential for the aggregation leading to the mesomorphism. In addition, the single crystal structure of a model compound N-(4-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)phenyl)benzamide was solved. The structure was a methanol solvate in which each pyrazole is engaged in hydrogen bonding to form a dimer through methanol bridges. The pyrazole molecules stack along the a axis and interact by hydrogen bonding through the amide groups to yield parallel infinite chains. Benzamide compounds are luminescent in the solid state and in the liquid crystalline state, in the blue region of the visible spectrum.

Self-assembly of 4-aryl-1H-pyrazoles as a novel platform for luminescent supramolecular columnar liquid crystals

Phosphorescence in the liquid crystal state with one of the highest quantum yield values, 42%, at room temperature is reported. This property is achieved with cyclic trinuclear copper(I) complexes prepared using 3,5-dimethyl-4-(trialkoxyphenyl)pyrazolate ligands. The compounds show well-organized hexagonal columnar mesophases that are stable at room temperature or near room temperature with intracolumnar order at distances of 3.6 A, red emission and lifetimes consistent with the excimeric metal-centered phosphorescence typical of copper trinuclear pyrazolato complexes. A non-mesogenic analogue shows similar properties, and the single crystal structure is formed by stacked molecules forming a supramolecular extended structure with two different intermolecular Cu⋯Cu contacts, 3.368 A and 3.666 A, which are in the range of previously reported weak cuprophilic interactions. The results demonstrate that metallomesogens with efficient room temperature phosphorescence can be obtained with metal complexes other than the widely explored and precious metal-based iridium or platinum complexes.

Liquid crystalline copper( i ) complexes with bright room temperature phosphorescence

Functional supramolecular organogelators containing a luminescent 4-arylpyrazole unit are described. Moreover, the compounds show supergelator behaviour. The synthesised molecules combine a 1H-pyrazole ring, an amide group and a trialkoxyphenyl group. The study of the gelation process and the structure–property relationship reveals that both the pyrazole and the amide groups are essential for the H-bonding driven gelation process. Chiral derivatives with a similar chemical structure are able to amplify molecular chirality through the formation of aggregates and gel fibers with supramolecular chirality by a cooperative self-assembly mechanism which follows a nucleation–elongation model. The compounds are luminescent in solution and they are able to enhance this property in the gel, exhibiting a remarkable aggregation-induced enhancement of emission (AIEE effect). Therefore, these novel molecules are able to efficiently amplify properties such as chirality and luminescence from the molecular level to the macroscopic level.
